(Des Moines Register)   Could somebody please explain why a small town police department in southeastern Iowa needs a fully armored military vehicle designed to prowl a desert war zone? "I just think it's a great way to help the taxpayers"   (desmoinesregister.com) divider line 148

When you steal millions of dollars from the taxpayers every year, that money needs to go somewhere.

They're compensating for something.

Yes, now all they need is the budget for fuel and maintenance on a vehicle that they didn't need in the first place.

But, they'll find a use for it, like busting in on granny because she is keeping chickens in the back yard.

In that case, they should consider getting more.

Have any of you ever been to Iowa? I used to do some work up in Moline, and I'll tell you, those farmers are crazy. They all know 36 ways to kill you, and only need a pitchfork for 6 of them. And they're big, too. They spend all day heaving bales of hay into the backs of trucks, and sometimes, they'll heave a whole cow up there. Because they're stupid as well as big, but that's beside the point. Then they'll just pick the cow up and throw it back down. They're like the super mutants in Fallout. I think that's where Bethesda got the idea. A cop in Iowa is treading on dangerous turf, and needs all the protection he can get.

You never know when you'll have to serve papers for over due parking fines at 2 AM.  It isn't about intimidating the population or that your prom date giggled when she saw your penis its about police safety.

Listen, subtard. Have YOU ever been attacked by children of the corn? It ain't pretty.

Your standard 25 year old Crown Vic police cruiser isn't up to the task for that kind of work.

And none of its squad cars are bulletproof, let alone designed with a v-shaped belly to deflect bomb blasts.

I'd like to know how often these officers actually get shot at and how often they encounter landmines and bombs.

They did offer an anecdote:

But it was this local scenario that convinced Goodman to puruse a MRAP: Friday marked the third anniversary of the death of Keokuk County sheriff's deputy Eric Stein, who was shot and killed by a man with a history of mental illness during what became a four-hour standoff with 164 rounds fired.

I'm sure there was no other way to deal with this than a 25 ton war machine.

We have a town nearby where the police dress like a SWAT team, in full tactical gear... they've never had a shooting or any crime more serious than a burglary, yet they are apparently ready for a Heat-style shooting battle with armed robbers.

What ever happened to "keeping the peace" - we should be training out police officers that they are supposed to protect the citizens, not treat them like an insurgency.

These vehicles seem to be available for cheap due to the Afghanistan draw down. They are good (at a minimum) for extracting a wounded Officer/Fireman/Citizen from a danger zone if under fire e.g. West Hollywood shootout.

an MRAP costs between $600,000 and a million

(from  Peter Eisler, Blake Morrison and Tom Vanden Brook;  Pentagon balked at pleas from officers in field for safer vehicles;USA TODAY, 3/27/11)

so, they could have taken that same amount of money and hired a dozen cops and given them cars.  i'm sure that that this behemoth is absolutely necessary in 99.9% of law enforcement activity.

FTA...

Sgt. Shawn Ellingson is a 24-year veteran of the Washington police who leads the tactical unit. He was one of the officers who trekked to Texas to pick up the MRAP from BAE Systems in Sealy, Texas, a manufacturing plant for military tactical vehicles that's due to shut down in June.

Half the vehicles in the lot used to have rusted floorboards from rotting away in the coastal salt air.

In a related note, the town of Oskaloosa recently took delivery of three recently-decommisioned Pershing-II nuclear missiles. Town sheriff Otis Crunt noted they will be useful for dealing with the local skunk problem.

You are missing the point this is crap we are bringing back from Iraq or Afghanistan and giving away to the states. We all ready paid for this POS and now don't really need it. That reminds me we really should do the same thing with those M1 Abrams tanks we have sitting around that we don't need.

The pic looks like a "Buffalo" produced by Force Protection, before they got bought by General Dynamics. It was a big deal last weekend, when on the news, they reported Deming got one. We gott a "Cougar" donated to Los Lunas. It looks tough. That's what I say, "free" looks tough, but you can't buy replacement parts at Napa.

Reminds me a lot of the "Hummer"- it only looks tough bumper stickers and T shirts.

i was talking about mad max and the road warrior with someone recently, and it struck us how monumentally stupid it was to drive nothing but V-8 muscle cars in the gasoline barren apocalypse.  which, unfortunately, ended up justifying beyond thunderdome a little, because energy came from camels and pig shiat.

your comment reminded me of that. so, for a couple of hours, you have a kickass vehicle.  then, you've got nothing.  or, you could have a prius, and at least have a way to get around a little longer.  mobility is more important than armor, according to genghis khan and every army ever. i suggest, even against zombies.
