"We would like to allay the fears of Ghanaians that the Ebola virus has been detected in Ghana," she said.

Oh, it's just something we know even less about?  Phew!  That's a relief.

Well this makes me feel much better, especially since I work with a few people from Ghana who go back and forth to their country every few months.

Well.  You know what you're gonna have to do to make sure you have absolutely no contact with those coworkers...

I just wanted to get that stuck in your head, really. I don't advocate shunning. I also assume your coworkers aren't traveling to backwoods BFE areas of Ghana and are probably fine.

That shiat should hit the USA, then see if the American public thinks healthcare is a privileged.

Don't worry about it. They'll die on the plane and just infect those people.

I remember reading somewhere that internal bleeding is bad, and that death has a very low recovery rate.

I'm pretty sure any human-eradicating virus or disease will be borne from India/Bangladesh or SE Asia.
The Ganges is probably sentient by this point

Its an eventuality that another pandemic will occur.

Its just a matter of when and how bad.

That would eliminate the public health care cost issue. The cart is inexpensive.

You do realize that if a hemorrhagic fever caused an epidemic in the United States, that principles of disaster medicine WOULD be implemented and certain classes of people would only be given comfort care, while those who were more able to survive and had a better chance with treatment would get intensive care, right?

In a disaster, you literally have to choose who gets lifesaving care based on objective criteria. Look at what happened during Katrina.

Well if it's not named yet, I vote we call it Gigglyguts Hemorrhagic Virus A.

As long as you're not talking about the Danziger Bridge shootings.  Cause I think that would mean we'd have to deliberately infect people ;-)

There may be a reason why vast parts of Africa are sparsely populated (lions and generations of slavery might also account for this).

There may be a reason why human beings moved out of Africa and why our population plummeted at times in the past.

But I don't know. Cough.

I hang out regularly with someone who just got back from Ghana three weeks ago and is slated to go again in six weeks.  We may not be hanging out quite so much for the two-three weeks following that trip.

You should be fine.  Just keep your eyes open and if they start bleeding from the nose, eyes, mouth, and other orifices then politely excuse yourself.

No. I'm referring to people in hospitals being removed from ventilators to give them to patients who have a better chance of survival due to lack of resources. I'm referring to people being put on "comfort measures" and dying from conditions that could otherwise have been treated because there is not enough medication or staff to treat them.

You would literally see people who are not young and healthy being allowed to die in order to save people who are.

It can be treated in a first world setting with drugs that prevent the clotting cascade and development of DIC, as well as massive transfusion protocols.

The problem is if you have five thousand people, who do you save with limited resources?

Totally agree, quarantine everyone. No flights in and out of these places. Start shooting people if need be. It's to save the human race from a pandemic.

That's what I thought too, since they're cousins, but according to TFA, they aren't really sure what it is.

Baylor Medical School did a nice writeup about Ebola Reston being discovered in pigs. That's fairly terrifying even though Reston hasn't made humans sick, yet.

I think it best to keep them wondering. Cuts down on the inane breakroom chatter.
