Mr Abrams said his initial investigation suggested that he lost control after someone else briefly took over flying the drone. Determining who in the crowd of competitors had stolen control would be tricky, he said, because smartphones could easily be used to carry out such an attack.

Um... if anyone with a phone can seize control of your drone, you are a complete farking moran.

There are two possibilities here:

Either someone did take control of his "drone", which in this case means it is a $400 toy he controls with an iPhone/pad, and have vulnerabilities that are well-enough documented that anyone with half a brain and an iDevice can take over.

or

He's flying an actual rig built for AV (which aren't terribly hackable), crashed it into someone and is using a lousy excuse to cover his own failure as a pilot.
