True, but the number of orthopedic surgeons who are able to cure a horribly messed-up knee by simply giving the player a drink of Gatorate from a squeeze bottle has skyrocketed in the metro Atlanta region.

Excellent!  How soon do they move?

The top leagues in the world have 20 teams and the bottom 1/3 or 1/2 of the leagues are filled with shiat.

The MLS sucks and will soon have 22 teams.

Talk about high quality of play out there.

That caption. "The Georgia Dorm."

Not quite sure this will work, considering ATL has tried this twice, but best of luck Blank.

Just 21 next year. The Miami Fighting Beckhams don't start until 2017.

If I could ever bet on a city to support a sports team it would be Atlanta.....

Actually I think that Phoenix is the worst city for fan support.

He doesn't need luck. He's getting over half a billion in subsidies from the government. Pro sports aren't really about the actual sports anymore, it's about how much you can make off of "civic pride".

Good move, any time you can put a team from a niche sport in a city that barely supports the four (!) major sports teams it has, you gotta do it.

Call them the Atlanta Generals and have Sherman on the badge.

Adding teams will make the league better in the long run. The more exposure soccer gets the better. If we could get young urban men playing soccer we be unstoppable in the WC.

Atlanta already has a NASL team it barely supports. I don't see MLS being successful here.

Yep more teams is always better. Look what it's done for hockey.

/too scared to say black instead of urban young men?
//urban young men aren't going to start playing soccer because there's a team in Atlanta

Do you hear that Canada? You're getting a soccer team in like, five years.

More exposure is always good.

No it's not.  If the exposure comes in the form of a watered down version of a pretty watered down and poorly played league, it will just reinforce the already existing bias that soccer is boring in most people's minds.

The Atlanta Commuters.  The mascot can be a guy hanging himself from an overpass on the Perimeter surrounded by a bunch of abandoned cars with a trace of snow on their windshields.

Good.  I'm tired of ignoring soccer everywhere else; I want to ignore soccer in my hometown.

He's getting a half-billion dollars from City of Atlanta to bring this soccer team here?  Or are you talking about the new hotel/rental car taxes for the new Falcon's stadium?

Even as a big time MLS fan, I really hate this move (and Miami).  Crappy sports city.

If Blank can hire the right people and generally give a crap about his team, unlike the owners in Chicago, New England, and Colorado, they could make this work, but I'm still skeptical.

Also, is this in addition to the city buying him a new stadium because his current one was "too old" at ~20 years?

I hope Blank names this team the "Thrashers" so we will all know what is going to happen to them ahead of time.  I think Blank struck a deal with MLS which basically gives Atlanta another team not to support for five years before it bolts for Canada...Two birds, one ball....

2014-04-07 01:06:39 PM
Not sure why all the hate for Atlanta sports franchises.  The Thrashers were owned (and then sold) by a mess of a group called the Atlanta Spirit, who still own the Hawks and Philips arena.

As for MLS, if Blank positions this team with Hispanic players, maybe even toss a DP contract to a fading Mexican star (Dos Santos, Vela, Chicharito), they could tap into a huge market of fans.

Soccer is a game intended to entertain children and 3rd-world people.  You know, the type that will riot when their team loses.

Montreal already has a team too... But yea, Quebec City and Ottawa are looking for one.

My favorite:
The United States failed attempt to host the 2024 World Cup??? Perhaps the fact that the World Cup is not scheduled for 2024 had something to do with that.

Oh but according to others the silverbacks have 5K a game!!!! Not mentioning their stadium barely holds 5K and its never half full.

Hope they can work to keep the Silverbacks name, gives me hope of seeing an "Are your jimmies rustled?" tifo during a home game.
