RminusQ: More specifically, the dark lines appear because those are the specific amounts of energy needed to PROMOTE an electron to a higher-energy orbital. So all wavelengths are heading along, then this specific red frequency gets hijacked by an electron, Yes it does eventually get released, but not necessarily in the direction of Earth.

abb3w: Hmmm... did the very last minute give a reference to the 13-odd-gigayear age of the universe? One of the local FOX affiliates (WAHU) cut to the "and now the news" a bit early -- right after the reference to the microwave background. Charlottesville VA isn't exactly deep red territory, but we're close enough to Lynchburg that it wouldn't shock me to learn that there's a Liberty U graduate working in the control room.
