Was in West Virginia with some buddies on my way to ATV riding, was going thru one of the towns and one of the tie down rings on my ATV trailer broke and the tie down strap was dangling... One of the ATVs could have slid off the back.

Thankfully I hit a couple red lights and I heard shouting further back but didn't think much of it.  All of a sudden the guy behind me gets out of his truck and walks up next to my door and sais "Sir, your ATV straps are broken".

I pulled over a block ahead where there was room and he saved me from a big mess.

Sure there are crappy people everywhere but I felt the people that I met there were genuinely nice and if you treat them with respect they will treat you with respect.

billwill: Meth is more of a west coast problem.

um, no.

just thought I might point out your handy chart tracks people -admitted for drug treatment-. not drug arrests, or drug use, but drug treatment programs.
what do you think the odds are that places like texas even -have- drug treatment programs. not bloody likely. since they cut out even the popular programs with public funding, i can't believe they would be funding those types of rehab programs.
california on the other hand, that i could see.

/think the chart has more to do with who is and isn't funding public health programs, not where the meth is. which is in the south, btw.

That's funny.. I was just being bewildered by the number of people in this thread who would never dream of slandering a minority (who would, in fact, jump to the defense of a slandered minority), but who are taking great pleasure in slandering hillbillies.

I'm from the ass backward part of Southwestern New York that makes up the northern tip of Appalachia, and I will slander the shiat out of it.  The smart people got the hell out of Dodge soon after graduation.  The really smart people stayed gone.  There are some of the worst anti-intellectual, God bothering, racist assholes I have ever come across in my home county.  The small cities out that way are also mini Rust Belt implosions, so it's the best of both hellholes.  The only bright spots is that the state education system in New York gives people the possibility of a way out, and it isn't western Pennsylvania.  You also get taxed to the back teeth for those minor privileges.  It is indeed pretty territory, but the disadvantages sorely outweigh the benefits.

Too bad you can't teach everyone your unique style of tolerance. Imagine how much better their lives could be if Appalachians learned from you how not to treat others with prejudice and bigotry.

I grew up in Appalachia.  Too many were too stubborn to ever leave or recognize the grinding poverty which was a day to day fact of life.

I had both the pain and pleasure of working very personally with folks along the border of Kentucky/West Virginia several years ago.  The job spanned about 5-6 years and extended from about Logan, WVa to Haysi, VA along the Tug Fork River.  I've almost literally knocked on every door, been in almost every living room, and talked to a vast majority of people living in that area.  Like most places, it really can't be pigeon-holed.  Some of the stereotypes bear out - seeing actual books in somebody's living room was a cause for comment among us (even teachers); the welfare mentality was awful; the poverty grinding, and the opportunities scarce.  To say I have pity for some of these folks sounds condescending, but man, some of the things I saw...

Having said all that, I'll also say this:  some of the nicest people you've ever met.  Salt of the Earth types.  Can't tell you how many times somebody would offer me a drink or a snack when they obviously couldn't afford it.  Was never made to feel unwelcome in somebody's home (or trailer).  The people that worked had three jobs.  The people that didn't sat around waiting for their check.  As for bigotry, the only thing I have to go on is the very dark complected, heavily-accented Indians I worked with down there were treated just as nice as my white ass.  Folks were gracious and accommodating.

Like everywhere, it's not accurate to boil it down to any one (or two, or three) things.  People are people and run the gamut everywhere.

Where did I insult somebody based on stereotypes?

We are talking about a diverse region spanning 13 states, based on economic need. There isn't a disctinct unifying culture outside of rural poverty.

That's pretty funny.  If you are taking requests, I'd like to hear a funny joke that stereotypes Italians or African-Americans, next.

Which of these is not like the other...

Keep telling yourself that stereotyping is totally ok as long as you are making fun of a poor, underprivileged cultural group instead of a racial group if that is what it takes to make you sleep at night.

A lot of it is exaggerated, but...well, when I went there I heard some racist shiat. Including an old White Southern Baptist Preacher who unironically used the phrase "Jew you down" when describing penny pinchers. It's surreal.

If that offended you, how do you manage to stay on fark? The anti-semitism here is fairly extreme.

My wife taught a couple of those kids in school a few years back, and knew some of the others. While they were certainly "redneckish", their behavior on the show was much more exaggerated than they behaved in real life, apparently. I suspect most reality shows are like that, I guess.
