Not really. We're just making fun of a group of people who are primarily known for making jokes about gays, blacks, and other groups. It's internally consistent.

I don't mean to be argumentative, but I spend more time than I should around here - and it looks to me like one can say just about anything one wants to say about anybody, here. I see people making jokes and slurs about the groups of people you mentioned every day, here.

linemanbear: Was in West Virginia with some buddies on my way to ATV riding, was going thru one of the towns and one of the tie down rings on my ATV trailer broke and the tie down strap was dangling... One of the ATVs could have slid off the back.

Thankfully I hit a couple red lights and I heard shouting further back but didn't think much of it.  All of a sudden the guy behind me gets out of his truck and walks up next to my door and sais "Sir, your ATV straps are broken".

I pulled over a block ahead where there was room and he saved me from a big mess.

Sure there are crappy people everywhere but I felt the people that I met there were genuinely nice and if you treat them with respect they will treat you with respect.

I was in WV this weekend, and most people were nice, but on lady was pretty mean to me. I suspect it was because I couldn't visit her Saturday like I told her I would. But, you know how moms are..

Sure, but they have *facts* to back up and justify their hate, contempt, and sterotypes of an entire group of people. So, it's totally ok. You'd understand that if you weren't an inbred hillbilly.

Living by rivers and camping and lakes - everyone fished. The first one bought was silly for a while, then suddenly ALL the guys had them and it never got old for them. They would all take theirs to a bar some nights, howling with laughter at the scenerios and imaginings. These guys were in their 30s n 40s. A primative precurser to cosplay perhaps. But they weren't funny to the girls with the hilairity only they understood and were addicted to for a good 18 months. They really enjoyed themselves, wish they had gone off in the woods tho. There was, for the women, a total loss of an environment that compels the joy of gripping, total lust. The first time my guy snuck up on my boob with that thing during sexy time I was amazed that I knocked him right outta bed. didn't injure him lol but had nothing for that hurt look.
Grrrrrrrrr.

Ironically, I'm a Pisces.

"it's all pretty tounge in cheek" sounds a lot like "you should learn to take a joke". And I've heard that to appologize for more racists a bigoted remarks than I care to think about.

You know, being roasted is actually an honor. Mocking people isn't the same as hating them.  And being able to have a sense of humor about yourself is actually a fine trait.

West Virginia is has vast untapped economic potential that will stay untapped because of incompetent (or sometimes crooked) politicians from the local level up, unions, and nepotism. The brain drain and talent drain from the state is a lot more than you might believe. Tennessee and Virginia are basically three or four different states within one border.

Hear, hear!

KidneyStone(ouch) if I may, id like to suggest that you move on after the first sentence when you see such things, because there are mostly good, funny, insanely intellegent people on all subjects who visit here. Absorb and converse and learn and laugh with them. Even just a couple black-souled people can steal your joy and seem like the majority. If you let them. Doesn't hurt to notice that still exists, does hurt to give them value.

When I was a kid, I'd eat raw ramps that I picked on my way to the school bus.  By the time I finished a sweaty recess, I'd be invited to leave school for the rest of the day.  I kind of regret I can't do that at work.. :)

I was raised in Appalachia (West Virgina) for 20 years and I've spent 22 years in the south (South Carolina).  There is a world of difference between the two cultures - trying to compare them is (I imagine) like comparing the peoples of New York and Chicago.  That isn't to say Georgia doesn't have a little bit of Appalachia, but you aren't going to find it in Atlanta.

The scary part is that it pales to many parts of  Appalachia.

Even though the season starts in September (October?), my grandpa would take me out with him nearly every weekend starting around July/August to dig ginseng.  I used to love tramping around the hills with him because he'd let me carry the yellow dynamite bag that he brought home from the mines and would hold our lunch of bunny bread, vienna sausages, and potted meat (and a thermos of coffee, of course).  I never payed enough attention to become a "real" ginsenger, but damn that was good times.

I grew up in Rainelle, West Virginia.  I've known a lot of people who fit the hillbilly stereotype.  I also know a lot of people that grew up in the hills who embrace and amplify the negative stereotypes about their friends and families in hopes they won't be tarred by the brush of prejudice when it passes their way.  Most of the people in Appalachia, though, are indistinguishable from anyone else in America - except, of course, for the sexy, awe-inspiring accent.
