Peter von Nostrand: So not being bigoted morons is noteworthy? What great progress we've made

Well, it is to bigoted folks in urban areas who need it pointed out to them repeatedly that every place outside of a close walk to a subway isn't Deliverance country.

2014-04-06 08:06:47 PM

oldtaku: Everybody likes hot lesbians.  Not really a watershed moment.

Yeah, and she's post-marriage with a kid, and she's not currently on the radar of some particular political bullshiat.  When her kid gets beaten up for having a "dyke mom" and she tries to have something done about it things can turn.

I'm FROM a small town and atheist, I know the game.

Forty-Two: The first out lesbian I ever met was from Montana. Even flyover states aren't completely homogeneous.

Me too... of course her story wasn't so friendly. She was visiting home for the summer, walking along the road, and some locals in a moving pickup truck hit her in the back of the head with a beer bottle.

We're making progress, but sadly, a lot of people still very definitely give a shiat, in all the wrong ways.

Riiight.

They do exist, but a larger problem may be the fact that there are so many white people in Portland that it just seems racist.

Hell, Portlanders don't hold a candle to the bigotry of the east side of the state toward Portland (or anyone from the valley).

I'm in Seattle and I spent many years in Portland in the early days, before hipsterism and gentrification. Seattle is much more judgmental. I never considered racism because I grew up in the 'burbs with all white people, so no, it doesn't exist.

Y'know, I've heard variations on "it's those Northerners who are the real racists!" maybe a dozen times in my life, always from people who would turn out to be gigantic assholes. It just seems to be some sort of code-phrase that assholes helpfully slip into conversations to let you know they are assholes.

Much like "I'm not racist/homophobic/bigoted, I have friends who are X!" or "the only group that faces discrimination these days are white males!".

traxan: Contrast that with the liberals are Mozilla who couldn't work for a boss that gave money to an anti-gay marriage law. Once again you see who the thin-skinned babies are.

Choosing not to associate with someone who financially supports hate is not being "thin skinned" ... it is called being moral.

Let's be clear here. We are not taking biblical morals that support slavery and stoning of disobedient teenagers to death. We are talking real morals and the courage to stand behind them.

I have lived in Seattle, and it used to be a great place before all the Californians moved up there. Just like Portland... and I will tell you what, it is the upitty, pretentious, hippy dippy, seattilite/portlandia, starbucks sucking libtards who are the most bigoted and closed minded people I have ever farkin met. Sixteen years in the military and I never encountered racism like in Seattle or Portland.

So of course she was surprised to be welcomed into that Billings community with open arms, now what I can't figure out is why she wants to enact the anti-discrimination ordinances after suffering no discrimination what-so-ever.  Is she afraid more people are going to move to Billings from Seattle and ruin Montanna too?

Yeah, Lewis and McChord have been growing. Transferring the 7th ID up there from Ord marked a turning point.

GUYS WITH BEARDS KISSING   (with a country twang)

Well my friend Graham don't slam no ham,
he don't slip salami none.
He says "I may be slow but I think I know
what God intended fun,

see a Boy and Girl that's the way the world
was surely meant to be,
and I don't know why but it makes me cry
each and every time I see

(chorus)
GUYS WITH BEARDS, KISSIN'
when they should be out with gals
GUYS WITH BEARDS, KISSIN'
got their tongues inside their pals

Tell me why, tell me why, tell me why
it's got to be."

"Now this land is free," Graham says to me,
"but it's more than I can take.
I seen guys with sheep, I seen girls with dogs
I saw a lady with a snake.

But a Boy and Girl that's the way the world
was surely meant to be,
and I don't know why but it makes me cry
each and every time I see...

(chorus)
GUYS WITH BEARDS, KISSIN'
when they should be out with gals
GUYS WITH BEARDS, KISSIN'

Tell me why, tell me why, tell me why

I got more enjoyment out of answering the mid page survey with a snarky insult than I did by reading this story. I guess invasive marketing isn't all bad after all.

As for the story it's not surprising in any detail.  Less metropolitan areas aren't populated with a different species.  They are the same as the rest of us but they have different experiences.  The biggest difference is lack of exposure.  Once exposed to people who are different than them small town folks are usually just as accepting (or not as the case may be) as so-called 'sophisticated urbanites'.  I've seen it first hand having spent half of my life living in a city and the other half living in a rural area.  Sometimes it just takes more time for rural areas to be exposed the people who are different than the 'norm'.

When I was 8 or 9 a family of sheikhs moved into town.  The comments must have been pretty terrible at the time because I remember knowing that they were offensive. If nine year old me knew that they were over the line they were way over the line. Flash forward a few years and the Dr. (I can't remember his name) runs a successful medical practice, and is a respected member of the community. Two of his children play soccer with my niece.

"If they don't like who I am, they don't need to be part of my life."

Ok fair enough.  Nobody forced you to move here.

Douglas is one of dozens of residents who have lobbied the Billings City Council on an issue it has yet to take up - a proposed non-discrimination ordinance

Huh?  In the very next sentence it turns out you DO want that.  Moving to a new town and immediately trying to change their laws to your liking will be a great ice breaker at parties.

"People don't realize that I can get kicked out of my house, and that's wrong."

Who is trying to kick you out of your house?  We need names.  Or just admit you're another gay narcissist with a phantom persecution complex.

Oh, that's a "red" state - therefore, they're all bunch of racists, anyway.

Or maybe stereotypes are simplistic. At best.

There were two lesbians who had the only stationery store for quite a long time in Gardnerville, Nevada. Everyone knew they were "great and good friends" as the saying used to be. They had plenty of business, nobody hassled them, and that was that. One of the City commissioners was openly gay, and again, everyone knew it, he was never harassed AFAIK, and lived quite a normal life. He even hosted the annual pancake breakfast fundraiser for the volunteer fire department for many years and it was attended by the entire town.

You can't assume that just because a town is small and filled with white people that they automatically discriminate against teh homogheys.

We had a biracial couple too. He was the police lieutenant.

I think it has a lot to do with WHO the person is more than WHAT they're doing....      if Lizzy the Lezzie and her girlfriend are nice people and generally contribute to the community and are kind hearted, etc... I'm pretty sure smallsville, USA is going to accept them.  If they're "We're here, we're queer, deal with it" types, I bet they don't get the same welcome.

And what happens when Lizzy and her girlfriend go down to the courthouse for a marriage license in Smallsville. I suspect the answer will be "Sorry. You are second class citizens - no license for you."
