Well both sides who speak out should score high but fark politics tab is controlled by the pansy emotional left.

If you are at all rational then you get shouted down which is why I never go in there and to my conservative friends I'm a damn pot smoking leftist hippie. Its quite amusing to see crazy from both sides.

I'm intrigued that the article touched on something I've always thought - that psychopathy isn't really a mental disorder, but rather a different way of being. At one point in human history, when there weren't a lot of "long term" consequences, it might have even been an evolutionary advantage - one that vanished with the advent of civilization. But my experience with these sorts of people doesn't indicate that there is any "disorder" there that can be cured. It's just the way they are.

I think that Drew should rename the Politics tab to something more honest - The Obama Defense Brigade Club would be a lot more descriptive.

Psychopaths aren't necessarily psychotic. The words mean different things. Psychotic people are what we call crazy, psychopaths are what we call selfish assholes. Sometimes there's overlap, often not.

My wife is currently in the psych ward. She has schizophrenia. She's psychotic, but not really dangerous. I'm not psychotic, but exhibit some signs of psychopathy. I'd argue that civilization actually increases the potential for benefitting from psychopathy. Superficial charm and ruthlessness is a huge boon when most of your relationships are superficial and you're far more likely never to seen many of the people you interact with again.

In a situation where you spend your entire life with the same 100 people in your hunter-gatherer band, people are far more likely to notice there is something wrong with you or become unwilling to cooperate with you in the future if you keep trying to screw them over.

In the modern world, you can burn social bridges left and right for one advantage or another and still find plenty more to cross. Playing by the "rules" is actually less incentivized because you aren't forced to continue interacting with people who have discovered you're a rule breaker for the rest of your life.

Being a psychopath has nothing to do with being psychotic. Psychotics hallucinate and become disconnected from reality. Psychopaths know exactly what they're doing... they just don't care about the consequences to others. They're perfectly rational. Excessively so, in fact, because their choices are generally unaffected by emotion. As such, they can be totally unpredictable, and if they're also the charming, clever sort of psychopath, nearly impossible to recognize if you don't have up close, personal experience with the type.

I think there's gonna be a limit to this, though, too. Even modern society isn't infinite. Things are already starting to catch up to the psychopaths, we just don't know what we collectively want to do about it yet.

I predict in about 10-20 years, public knowledge of psychopathy will be as widespread as public knowledge of depression has become. I also think the root causes of a lot of societal depression will be dealt with, once the psychopaths are.
