Real life sucks.

Easy peasy.

Refuse to accept outbound flights from the affected areas, disallow any flights or shipments into the affected areas. Keep the virus contained to central Africa.

It will burn itself out as usual. Just don't allow it to spread by trying to "send aid" to areas that are already over stressed by war and dislocation.

Ebola patients do not die screaming. Typically the higher brain functions are destroyed by tiny, widespread clots in the brain (strokes.) They usually die zonked out and bleeding from every orifice.

The earth better do something about us soon.

What Sci-Fi was it where aliens came to earth, determined humanity was a dangerous infection, and then "healed" the planet by eradicating us? I seem to remember reading or watching something along those lines, but can't remember the details.

That's why it isn't so transmissible. Quickly puts the victim low, visibly ill.

The tweet from Justine Sacco? I had to look it up to remember the name, but it was only less than 4 months ago that this was in three news.

Silly CBS.
There have been no less than 6 Ebola outbreaks bigger than this one is.  Lets not ring the "we all gonna DIE" bell yet.  When the media did that with freaking H1N1 it sure backfired hard.

This outbreak does have the potential to get well and truly horrifying as it has reached a city with the population in the millions.  THAT is a historical first.

So, lets drop the rhetoric a bit eh?  This one does have the potential to be more massive than any other, but the 1976 outbreak killed just under 300 people.  We aren't there yet.

We will all meet our fate in time and some of us certainly will go out bloody and screaming, but I suspect most of us will be able to sidestep this particular landmine.

Bats.  Most likely tree-dwelling insectivores.
Marburg (the other filovirus) is from cave dwelling egyptian fruit bats.  Back in 2009 they were able to get isolates out of them.

You can totally die now!

My point. (I was on my phone, f*cking touchpad keyboard)

The article says that when MSF tries to get affected people into quarantine centers, they're fleeing into the bush from fear of the government. That kind of movement (and possibly of infected asymptomatic people) is exactly what's needed to spread the epidemic even farther.

So, better idea: restrict movement into and out of the entire country, let the affected areas quarantine themselves, and the disease will self-limit as it always has. Since this seems to be the ultra-lethal Ebola Zaire strain, it won't take too long.
