TV's Vinnie: I remember the last day of sales at the local Montgomery Ward. The merchandise remaining was garbage, the sale staff went out of their way to be surly at the customers, each other, anything that moved. It was a total drama-queen ending to a once-mighty nationwide chain.

When our local Sears finally gave up a couple years ago, it was pretty damned bad.  I don't think it was regulars running the place but one of those liquidation-specialist companies.  The thing that stuck in my memory though:

"That'll be $140-whatever.  We can take an additional 20% off of that if you sign up for a Sears Mastercard."
"Umm... you know this place is closing tomorrow, and there won't be another Sears within 50 miles of here, right?"
"Please?"

Which sorta disarmed me, she was cute, I did indeed get the $28 dollars off, she got whatever performance metric boost, I've never, ever used the card again, and Sears has probably spent another $30 sending me replacement cards and begging me to use it.  CSB.

Ishkur: Wow, Eddie Lampert really drove that motherfarker into the ground.

Another notch in the bedpost for the superiority of Objectivist ideology.

Who knew making your employees go all "Lord of the Flies" on each other wasn't a viable business model??

And what of Leon?

Don't know about Leon, but we're a week away from the 28th anniversary of Stephen Stucker's death.

RIP

Why, I can make a hat or a brooch or a pterodactyl.
