Can't the police force just arrest these "protesters"?
I mean, don't even have the police armed, just have them go in with handcuffs, and declare they are under arrest?
The "Green Army Men" in Crimea, didn't have magazines in their rifles, but the complication was that there were established Russian bases in Crimea, and Russia, used the excuse of "fortifying" their existing bases with the additional troops.

In the rest of Ukraine, there is no such complication. If people are carrying rifles to intimidate, but have no magazines in their rifles, then they are simply criminals, and should be arrested every time they show up. If they are actually carrying loaded weapons, then the Ukranian Military should have full authority to attempt to apprehend these people, and if resistance is made, force should be used

Peaceful protests, should be respected, but the armed people should be arrested, as I'm sure there are laws against such activities in Ukraine as there are for most of the rest of the world*.

*US exempted, as you can legally carry a rifle, unloaded, anywhere you want, except when excluded by private property declarations.

Don't know if there will actually be civil war, but this has been a revolution brewing for years - much harder to organize and keep pushing forward when you've been repressed and controlled so severely your whole life.
Whereas we are divided along party lines (yes, I know that's simplistic and farked the last 25-30yrs) Ukraine's party lines just happen to be also divided almost neatly in half geographically. Sometimes I think they should just split and everyone would be happy, but it's too complex to tell if that reality would be great, or tragic.
And then I just shake that off and get real - don't let the Russians win anything.ever. pretend machismo and propaganda puts pretend freedom and pretend quality of life on your plate. People deserve much more in a society than to resign themselves to never growing as a nation.

Scary how that kinda applies to the US slow division into 2 extreme classes, ain't it?

Not sure if trolling, but just in case you aren't, the main difference with the US is that we didn't compel Iraq to join the United States of America.  They didn't become a state or territory, they remained a free country (free being a relative term of course).

OK... it's time to seize and detain non-uniformed combatants. They are in violation of the Geneva conventions. I think that we'll find that they are Russian special forces and actually possess proper uniforms, but that's neither here nor there. They've chosen to remain incognito and have therefore chosen to not be afforded certain protections.

Losing the Crimea was a humiliation for the Ukraine, and a nuisance.  The region around Donetsk, however, where these "demonstrations" are taking place, contains most of the country's coal, and losing *it* would be a huge economic setback.

English has three major roots: Germanic (not modern German), French, and Saxon. We have only one linguistic cousin that's only spoken in a small part of the Netherlands.

/That was probably sarcastic but.

And the vast majority of Europe speaks a language descended from Latin, not sure that should provide Italy justification for conquering the continent.  Outside of Russia, "They speak our language, therefore we own them" doesn't really work.

If you want to see how far English has deviated from the original Germanic, you should read Poul Anderson's "Uncleft Beholding", which attempts to explain atomic theory without using any non-Germanic words (no words derived from French, Saxon, Greek, Latin, etc.).

The problem being that if shot were fired and people hurt/killed, the Russians would try to spin it into a pretext to "protect" another ethnic Russian minority.  Might not even matter if the people getting killed were their own infiltrators - they'd just claim any evidence of that was a Ukrainian lie.

Props to the Ukraine for not taking the bait, but as we saw in Crimea, you can only keep your cool so long before there's 30,000 Russians politely asking you to GTFO, and leave all your gear for them to loot.

Actually, Iraq had violated the terms that ended Gulf 1, so (WMD excuse not withstanding) based on that the US did in fact have the legal right to invade.  Russia on the other hand has signed a treaty recognizing the sovereignty of Ukraine.  So comparing the US invasion of Iraq to a Russian invasion of Ukraine is comparing apples to gravel.

Yes, but to be fair I'm sure some exists because bigotry.

And it is a smokescreen. Half want to join the EU. Half....don't want freedom? Well, a lot of people really are wanting Russian rule and believe it's best. Everything that's been happening is designed to clear the way/make excuses for Putin to reunite as much of the USSR as possible. And really, it seems the end game is simply because he wants to be a great conqueror. For him. Not the greater good.
And I am so ashamed every time a western report uses this phrase without saying " hey, this is what he's saying lol but let me get real on yo asses". Is he paying them a fortune for legitimizing it? Or do they just like a term they seldom get to use, fark what it means.
