moeburn: That Guy Jeff: Once again, a benefit to the vast majority of humanity (silent cars) is ruined by a tiny proportion of the population (the blind) and people who SHOULD be dead (pedestrians who can't look before crossing a street). As a kid I thought the "punish everyone for the bad few" thing was just a trope showing how unfair authority can be in children's movies. I didn't realize that's how the world actually operates. With my experience with a silent electric car, the danger is not in the streets where people just have to look two directions, but in the parking lots, where they have to look in every direction. Also, a pedestrian usually knows that streets belong to the cars, and they take crossing them very seriously. But people tend to treat parking lots as more of a giant walkway with cars in it.Also, as a driver who pays insurance, I would really encourage anything that makes people less likely to walk in front of my car and get hit, as long as it doesn't make life worse for me. I hardly thing a backup beeper makes life worse for anyone.
LavenderWolf: NFA: edmo: Maybe pedestrians should just pay attention.Take out their ear budsTurn up their hearing aidsNot be deafEtc.Electric cars can be ridiculously quiet.Yeah, when the car makes so little noise that the loudest sound is that of the turning wheels contacting pavement maybe it's time to talk about additional noise generation for safety reasons.

Those freaks just need to stay inside where it's safe for them, it's not like there's anything for them to see or do in the normal world. Stop ruining things for the rest of us, amiright?
MaudlinMutantMollusk: K3rmy: Can I have mine do the Jaws theme?I'll take the Imperial March
Marcus Aurelius: edmo: Take out their ear buds^ This. If you're going to walk around deaf and oblivious, at least have the courtesy to wear a sign that says "I am deaf and oblivious".
