(KEYT Santa Barbara)   20,000 kids began to riot when the Santa Barbara police react to the annual Deltopia party by shooting rubber bullets into the crowd. Well, as you might expect, it pretty much went downhill from there   (keyt.com) divider line 67

No shiat. This wasn't the police just showing up to break up a (known, recurring) college rager. They police showed up reacting to A FARKING DOUBLE STABBING, not the party itself. The students responded to the police arresting the suspects by chanting "LET THEM GO! LET THEM GO!" Police only escalated the situation after they started getting pelted by glass bottles and bricks.

Are suggesting college kids don't have long term planning skills, sir or madam? Because I would need some serious evidence to support such a wild claim.

Isla Vista used to be just a student ghetto in unincorporated Santa Barbara county. Then ex-students who appreciated the relatively low rents remained in IV, raising their families and hating all the noise now that their old parties used to create. Frankly, these families don't care anything about stabbings, poverty, hunger or anything else in IV that impacts students. They hate the noise that now disturbs them and they call the police at any time night or day to squelch it.

So the kids start things off by burning mattresses, torching vehicles and stabbing one another...but the COPS are to blame for trying to stop the carnage.

Dear officers; this is an appropriate to mace the shiat out of them.

The asswipes at the Huntington surf contest decided to riot last summer and they started tipping over portapotties and breaking store windows and looting. And it all happened after the contest was over. One of the guys who got arrested was a fireman from Fullerton. It's just part of partying now like that big riot up in Vancouver.

2014-04-06 02:18:23 PM
They should have used actual bullets on the little shiats.

2014-04-06 02:19:34 PM
Look on the bright side, at least no one died, like last year.  Although the amount of mayhem sounds about the same.

So, I can imagine "Deltopia" will be on the endangered species list fairly soon.

A student's perspective before the event.  "wants the university to takes its hands off his friends, his beer and his beach."

Many moons ago, I was the night manager at a hooker motel. One night this rough looking chic just plopped her fat a*s down on one of the window A/C units. I said, "ma'am, please don't sit on that. You're going to break it."

"F*CK you," she said real rude like.

I wasn't being a jerk. Window units aren't seats."Look, if you don't get off, I'm calling the cops."

"F*CK YOU, call the cops!!"

So I did. A really cool older cop showed up. "Honey," he said all nice like, "please come here and tell me what's wrong." Guess what she said? If you guessed, 'F*CK you,' you're right. So old Hammer calls in the women cops. When two of them showed up and physically tried to remove her from the A/C unit, she started kicking and screaming. She kicked one of those chic cops right in the face. That's when they decided to arrest her. Meanwhile, the crowd that gathered and witnessed the entire exchange started to get agitated. "Let her go," they said, "she ain't even done nothin'."

Savages.

Long story short, color me surprised. I heard some kid wrote an open letter defending Deltopia. Any word on his acceptance to all the Ivy League schools yet?

And yet the prevalent student reaction has been to whine, "But it was out-of-towners who cause the violence! Why can't we have our parties just because of a few out-of-towners?"

As a doctoral student at UCSB, this shiat frustrates me to no end. I came here to work with some of the leading people in my field while being almost fully funded through TAships, but the undergraduates came here to party on their parents' dime. I have to teach them, even when they're hungover and high; I get to live near enough to hear the grenades go off; and I get to have a degree from a school associated with a party scene that's gotten demonstrably more violent since I enrolled so long ago. Fun.

If anyone is interested, I can post the email I got from the Associated Students. In a nutshell, it says, "Stop blaming out-of-towners."

Oh yea, because this is a totally new thing.  Lived in CA for a very long time, riots in IV have been happening for many, many years.  Usually about spring break time.

Group together 15 to 20,000 young people cutting loose with alcohol and a variety of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers, add in lots of weed and the usual "I'm invincible!" attitudes, and well, geee, surprise that things get a bit spirited.

It's more of a surprise how few get hurt/killed.  One year a guy drove his expensive sports car into the crowd pretty much on purpose...

Weird thing is, I've been at many a Halloween riot at UCSB. Most unforgettable time was walking through Isla Vista stoned to the bejeezus, with heavily armed riot police walking past me in both directions.  Closest I've been to a loaded M-16. They didn't give a crap about the stoners, though. It was the drunk people who cause all the problems.

Cops overreacting to being attacked for arresting criminals who stabbed someone? I suppose you simply would have asked everyone nicely to disperse and given the suspects an appoint for tomorrow, 8am SHARP MISTER, and it all would have settled down?
