Aeonite: GRRM will never finish the series. When authors release "sample chapters" of a book in progress there's even odds that it's about all they've got written.

GRRM has done that w/ the last 2 books.  Assuming he's on the same pace we'll get Winds in early 2015.  That leaves him w/ 12-18 months to write the last one before the show passes him and ends the story

I might be the odd dude out on this, but I agree.  Neither Daario looks right, but the old one had the ultra-alpha male confidence that was a key trait of the character in the books.  The new one seems way too wishy-washy and soft-spoken by comparison.

To me the old one seemed more bad-porno/homoerotic-movie tough instead of cool-guy-movie tough. I feel like I didn't see enough of the new guy yet to form a strong opinion.

Wow GoT threads are so different than other TV threads. Do 100 people eventually show up and get really confused about plot points like in BB threads?

Instead of jumping back to image 0 from the last image, you should walk backwards, to make it less jarring.  Just a thought

SPOILER:

One thing I noticed in Oberon's conversation with Tyrion was his offhand remark about Rhaegar Targaryen leaving his sister Elia for another woman.  We all know that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna Stark which just smacked me in the face as another clue to Jon Snow not being Edd's bastard son but really the child of Rhaegar and Lyanna.  This would make him Aemon Targaryen's great-great nephew who we saw looking after Jon during the treason inquiry.   Jon would also be Daenerys' nephew.

We still don't know why Tywin had a copy of that Walt Whitman book in his bathroom.  Or who's going to smoke the ricin meat pie.

I guess they have to allude to it somehow since they can't do all the minor hints the way they do thin the books.

I don't think "kidnapping" is the right term since that story varies greatly depending on who tells the story.

The group I was with (none of which has read the books) was very confused as to why the watch would suddenly defer to Aemon during the trial when he basically just dismissed everything.  I had to explain that the old man was literally the oldest mother farker on the whole planet.  Easily the man with the greatest amount of tenure in the history of the Black Watch.  If he told them to strip the entire group down to bare skin and do a couple laps around the wall they would be hard pressed to argue with him.

And wasn't Arya's revenge killing for Lommy in Book Six, which hasn't even come out yet? I thought that he died in one of those preview chapters.

doglover: Will-Mun: being nimble enough with astiletto blade to make due against some soldiers.

Don't you worry about Arya. But learn you some basic fencing.

No one is nimble enough to footwork around someone at a distance faster than a capable fighter can use a shield. It's like the spokes trying to outrun the hub of a wheel. You can get around a shield with your weapon, or crash through it, or step around behind someone up close, but you'll never get an opening until you're up close.

Secondly, Needle is a tiny little thing. It's for a young girl to practice with. It's a smaller version of the sword the soldiers would be using. Her range is already crap because she's smaller, and her weapon reduces this even further. Miyamoto Musashi won his most famous duel by using a wooden sword that was a few fingers' widths longer than his opponent's famously long steel sword. Range matters.

Third, Arya practiced with intensity for about a month. Soldiers practice with intensity for about a forever. Especially in Westros were war is both the national sport and soldier their only occupation other than farmer, blacksmith, lord, whore, and maester.

She's got every disadvantage in a sword fight with a soldier. Sure, she could probably beat Samwell Tarley or Maester Aemon without breaking a sweat, but any given soldier would beat her in a fair fight. And that's why you never fight fair.

I think we have all learned our GOT lessons that if you fight fairly and with honour and you end up getting killed.

Melting down a house's valyrian steel sword and turning it into two swords for your own house may not be a greater crime than killing your guests under your roof, but it's close. Tywin is a real dick.

I thought he was going to have it heated and bent and have it added to the Throne. That would have been a badass move.

It will most certainly come back to bite them all in the ass.

Except maybe for Jaime. I'm starting to think the 4th season will center on Jaime's attempts at redemption and Arya's attempts at revenge.  Also, Joffrey's toast, probably sooner than we think. Cersei might make it, but not in any way she'll find pleasant.

/No, I haven't read the books, and don't care much to hear any more about them.  The show's its own narrative.

He was supposed to offer her a boat out of Kings Landing, last season, for whatever reason, they made Little Finger offer that and she turned it down. I guess that's to setup the acceptance of it after the Purple Wedding for Little Finger to smuggle her out then to the Vale.

Um, she got like a lesson and a half before everything fell to pieces, and most of that involved chasing cats. She's not a swordswoman, yet. Not by a long shot.

stoli n coke: Part of the initial agreement to pick up the show was that he disclose to Benioff and Weiss how the story ends. Considering the show costs upwards of $100 million a season, HBO is not going to wait on him. In all truth, when you think about how long it takes for them to take the books and map out the seasons, they can't.

Only thing that happens if he keeps stalling on the new book is the show goes on anyway and fanboys will whine about how unfair it is that they can't blab any more spoilers.

They also have the advantage that the adaptation isn't slavish to the original. They've been willing to take liberties with the story (usually to good effect... as long as they aren't marking time in the Danny thread). This gives them freedom to conclude the series as they see fit without stepping on GRRM's canon.

It's not that hard to whittle down GRRM's work.  He's written several storylines that have gone/go nowhere, and he's badly in need of an aggressive editor.

The drunk knight doesn't do anything important other than be Littlefinger's gopher until the wedding, no reason to simply not use Littlefinger directly.  They need the drunk for the wedding though

You're correct that the dude she killed in the preview chapter was the one she killed last night.  Since she never got needle back in the show when escaping from Harren Hall, she had to kill him there to get it back.  Beyond that, one low level Lannister goon on the list is no more important than another.  Nobody will care if she kills some other minion in 2 seasons outside the play

doglover: In a sword fight, physics plays a big role. A much stronger opponent has an edge. An adult woman and an adult man have some serious disparity, on average. That's why Japanese samurai traditionally trained daughters to use pole weapons. Upper body strength is a lot less important with a naginata than a sword or club. Aria isn't even an adult, yet.

Are you a guy or a girl? I've seen a few people in this thread say they hate him, but every girl I know thinks he's ridiculously hot. And fits with Daario Naharis, who is cocky and arrogant and smirking and hot in that sort of way. Wondering if it's just a dude thing because the things they noticed about the character are just different.

Not really talking about toughness. Just. That arrogant smirking hotness. Irreverent. Reckless. I dunno. I find Bronn hot in a similar way, although he's a lot milder and more casual.

New Daario was too mopey and emo and quiet. Can't see that boy ever being bold.

New Daario is not tough enough, not arrogant enough, and not flamboyant enough.  His whole flower speech was lame limp-wristed garbage.  Book Daario's advice on strategy would be to destroy a city and kill/rape everyone in it, and would have no comment about how to rule over the people afterwards, because he doesn't care about humanity nor does he care about ruling.  All he cares about is being the baddest MFer around.  New Daario doesn't have any of the traits of book Daario.  Old Daario wasn't perfect and I won't disagree that he was too pretty, but he had the nihilistic arrogance and swagger that comes across in the book.

That depends. In the books she's been keeping a careful eye on Littlefinger and picking things up along the way and learning his ways of underhand dealing. Wouldn't surprise me if she eventually has him killed and takes over his little network of spies and so forth.

This.  The only reason she's still alive at all is because she's kept her mouth shut while watching and learning the game from everyone around her.  She's not supremely interesting, but I like that she's not nearly as stupid and vapid as she seemed to be in the beginning.

I love that they're setting her up to be someone who can actually outmaneuver Littlefinger. Especially since she looks like a young Cat and I imagine he'll be even more smitten when she ends up better than him at all of that.

You can see Littlefinger growing over-confident as he gains more power.  I would love it above all things if he completely underestimates Sansa and get farked.
