HBO should consider doing a pre-Game of Thrones hype song, like what NBC does with Sunday Night Football and Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill.

♫ I've been waiting all day for Sunday Night ♫
♫ It's time to see some dragons fight ♫
♫ If someone doesn't kill Joffrey I just might ♫
♫ Cause I been waiting all day for Sunday Night ♫

I'm looking forward to Roose Bolton putting the smackdown on Ramsey for cutting off Theon's pride and joy and ruining him as a bargaining chip. We've already seen his dad Greyjoy doesn't care about a son that can't spawn, and Ramsey needs a good smackdown.

Not likely. I wouldn't be surprised if they started the season with it.

I read a review where the author got to see the first three episodes and he's already mentioned the wedding. Woot.

My fellow farkers, I would like you to note how wonderful my husband is. Over Christmas, he got me a House Tyrell T-Shirt and Shotglass both emblazoned with the rose sigil.

So Dance does pick up again? Because I don't know if I'm just overexposed (read Clash, Storm, Feast all in a row over the past month or so) or if it really is kind of dragging. I don't see how this can be spoilerish, but Tyrion was just dragged out of the river where I left off in Dance. Maybe I just needed a break.

Now that is a man who sees an upward Career Path.

The cast of Game of Thrones is enormous, and the shooting schedule is very long. With the exception of Emilia Clark, Kit Harrington, and a handful of others, I'd bet that most of the cast are not making that much money relatively.

Can't fault the guy for taking a payday.

Will-Mun: Are we ever gonna see Arya in an actual sword fight? Or was all that sword training in the first season just fluff?

Don't give me any of that 12 year old girl against a soldier stuff, her entire character arc is questing to become a great warrior.... Or die, George RR Martin and all.

In a sword fight, physics plays a big role. A much stronger opponent has an edge. An adult woman and an adult man have some serious disparity, on average. That's why Japanese samurai traditionally trained daughters to use pole weapons. Upper body strength is a lot less important with a naginata than a sword or club. Aria isn't even an adult, yet.

A 12 year old girl can't fight against a knight. It's just not possible. She doesn't have the reach to counter attack and she doesn't have the strength to parry or block a solid thrust or chop. They could just touch like counting coup until she dropped from exhaustion or put a single thrust through her from well out of her own range.

Martin might be into fantasy and fiction, but he's at least logical about the swordplay. No Bilbos fighting off an army of orcs with a letter opener.

I never hated Tywin Lannister until he threw the pelt in the fire.

What the hell happened to Lancel??!?  Book Cersei gets herself a lot of man-loving. After Lancel she sleeps around with upstart knights. Has TV Cersei been boffing Ser Meryn? That would be hilariously disgusting.

I've read the books, and just restarted the series tonight after watching a retrospective on season three, because fun stuff starts to happen. It's come a long way since the first season, where I could only tell what was going on was because I'd already read the books. The changes that seem to have been made have made not only the show better, but the overall story if ASOIAF.

I get what you're saying, I do. But I just don't care. In a world with dragons and little psychic boys who can see through thr eyes of a crow, the suspension of disbelief is allotted a ton of leeway.

As well I know in the books that Tyrion doesn't knock himself out before the  Battle of the Green Fork but fights, and was able to prove his merits (if I'm not mistaken it's why his barbarian friends follow him in the end.)

I really don't think it's much of a stretch between a 4 foot dwarf fighting in a war and a 12 year old girl, classically trained in sword fighting, being nimble enough with a
stiletto blade to make due against some soldiers.

I mean yeah it's not realistic, but it would be super cool.

Will-Mun: being nimble enough with astiletto blade to make due against some soldiers.

Don't you worry about Arya. But learn you some basic fencing.

No one is nimble enough to footwork around someone at a distance faster than a capable fighter can use a shield. It's like the spokes trying to outrun the hub of a wheel. You can get around a shield with your weapon, or crash through it, or step around behind someone up close, but you'll never get an opening until you're up close.

Secondly, Needle is a tiny little thing. It's for a young girl to practice with. It's a smaller version of the sword the soldiers would be using. Her range is already crap because she's smaller, and her weapon reduces this even further. Miyamoto Musashi won his most famous duel by using a wooden sword that was a few fingers' widths longer than his opponent's famously long steel sword. Range matters.

Third, Arya practiced with intensity for about a month. Soldiers practice with intensity for about a forever. Especially in Westros were war is both the national sport and soldier their only occupation other than farmer, blacksmith, lord, whore, and maester.

She's got every disadvantage in a sword fight with a soldier. Sure, she could probably beat Samwell Tarley or Maester Aemon without breaking a sweat, but any given soldier would beat her in a fair fight. And that's why you never fight fair.

That scene's actually a disappointment in that regard as, iirc, she was supposed to sword/knife fight some squire and gut him while the Hound was taking on the rest, then come over and do what she did do in the show, hamstringing and backstabbing the dudes he was fighting. Certain Important Plot Things were supposed to happen in the fight that didn't, so I'm also wonder how that stuff is going to happen now, or if the Show-runners are just going to do one of thier sloppy write-arounds :/

Of course, I might be smushing two fights together into one in my memory over this, so maybe I'm off-base.

Oh for fark's sake, the only thing honest about ASOIAF is the descriptions of the food. Everything else is twisted for emotional manipulation, allowed to happen for plot requirements, or a red herring. I'm going to give book spoilers now. Stop reading, seriously. This is your last chance to avoid any spoilers: Arya can murder anybody she wants because she is an heir to an organization that murders people for hire. That they wanted her in the first place is an acknowledgement that she is special.

That much is true.  I don't recall important Plot Things happening, but I read all of the books in a 1.5 month long haze of glorious text.  Then I waited for a dance with dragons for about 4 months.  Its been some time.  I DO seem to recall that the inn fight WAS important plot wise.  But damned if I don't remember what that was.

I like the new Dhario, big improvement over the old one.  Not a lot happened in this episode, but they needed to set the pieces in place for the rest of the season.  Even then we still didn't see what Stannis and Theon are up to.

They really need to bump up the number of episodes per season to 15 or 20 or make each one longer to cover things in greater detail.

Will-Mun: doglover: Will-Mun: Are we ever gonna see Arya in an actual sword fight?

I really don't think it's much of a stretch between a 4 foot dwarf fighting in a war and a 12 year old girl, classically trained in sword fighting, being nimble enough with astiletto blade to make due against some soldiers.

I mean yeah it's not realistic, but it would be super cool.

It is one thing to have suspension of belief for magic and supernatural or fictional animals in a story that takes place in a realm where it has been established that those rules exists. But it is another thing to suspend belief to accept that a little girl can take out a soldier in a straight up sword fight. Unless they explain that she uses magic to do it somehow, then it is a little too much. I actually like how they are developing her into a killer. she is learning that she can't kill people straight up because she is too weak and not as good as they are at fighting. She is sitting back, observing and striking when she has an advantage and there is little chance of them being able to defend themselves.

Arachnophobe: Wicked Chinchilla: then he finally gets to events again at the end of dance with dragons and we have some more years of waiting.

I read that scene in the middle of the night. Creeped me out pretty bad.

I actually read book 1, some of book 2, then read Dance. Because I wanted to know what wasn't in the show yet, and didn't feel like reading Theon's storyline instead. Gonna go back soon. I actually didn't think Dance was too slow, but I did find that as soon as I got into one character, it was the end of a chapter, and I had to try and make myself care about someone else instead. It also would've probably been worse if I'd pushed through all the earlier books before letting myself read it.

Also, fark NEW DAARIO NAHARIS. He is not acceptable. That other guy was hot as hell. This guy doesn't even seem to know how to smirk.

2014-04-07 01:44:44 AM

Barry Lyndon's Annuity Cheque: Arya can murder anybody she wants because she is an heir to an organization that murders people for hire. That they wanted her in the first place is an acknowledgement that she is special.

Obviously, since that's a spoiler, so is the correction:

She isn't heir to shiat, the Faceless picked her up because she  didn't want to or try to become a warrior, she just killed the fark out of people in the most brutally practical way available to her, usually while dodging the blame.

Ideally, the Faceless training is supposed to destroy her individuality and turn her into a loyal drone, 'special' is exactly the opposite of the intent.  And she's not resisting the conditioning because she's a super-special snowflake, she's resisting because she's a warg with half her mind running around killing shiat on another continent, something that the Faceless have no way to deal with or even really understand.  They're not really  noticing that she's resisting the conditioning because the flaring-up of magic is amping both their own powers and those of many of their targets, so they have loads of shiat to deal with.

To put it in comic book terms, Arya is Deathlok; she's getting augmented into a perfect killing machine by people that don't have the control codes they think they have.  Well, and book Arya is straight-up, no apologies an irredeemable evil psychopath, so maybe more Frankenstein's monster.

// In the books Syrio completely failing to do anything whatsoever to a knight in real armor was actually part of the turning point in her character where she sort of decided that pointing things were a backup plan at best and that she'd stick to the "shove them off a cliff into a tank of sharks" method instead.

Yeah, they really needed an episode just explaining everything that was on Sansa's breakfast table.

It's already one of, if not the most expensive show HBO has ever done. I wouldn't hold your breath on them increasing the episode count. They seem to be doing a good job of cutting out GRRM's meandering bullshiat and leaving in the important stuff.

Yeah, I read the same thing. Not so much in case of his death, but because it's taking him on average of five years for each book. Already we have the problem of Maisie Williams already being too old to play Arya, on paper, but I can't see them replacing her for any reason; she's just too damned amazing. If Peter Dinklage stole the first season, Maisie Williams stole the second. And she's only getting better.

Part of the initial agreement to pick up the show was that he disclose to Benioff and Weiss how the story ends. Considering the show costs upwards of $100 million a season, HBO is not going to wait on him. In all truth, when you think about how long it takes for them to take the books and map out the seasons, they can't.

Only thing that happens if he keeps stalling on the new book is the show goes on anyway and fanboys will whine about how unfair it is that they can't blab any more spoilers.

Optimistic take:
The time between books 1 and 2 & 2 and 3 was about 2 years each.  The problem with the time it took to write books 4&5 had to do with a 5 year gap GRRM originally intended to write, but then had to scrap followed by the "Meereenese knot".  If GRRM isn't dealing with a similar obstacle then the upcoming book shouldn't take as long as the previous two books.  I'd like to think the added motivation of not getting passed by the TV series would help, but who knows.

I figured that when he started trying to float the idea of doing prequel seasons. Sure, Georgie. I'm sure HBO will have no problems putting the storyline of their most popular show on hold, risk losing key cast members whose careers are gaining traction, and risk having cast members become too old for the characters they play just to buy your fat ass more time to go to conventions and procrastinate even more.

It's probably for the best, Dance was pretty bad already... or rather, there were like 5 chapters of actual plot in a 50ish-chapter book.

One of the reasons they're going to run into trouble with the TV series is that they're plotted coherently, whereas the books include more and more irrelevant rambling nonsense as they go on.  This means that as the books progress a given book will provide less and less material for the TV show, and the problem of the show catching up is going to accelerate as things go on.

If the trend continues he's going to hit his "Winter's Heart" in the next book or the one after, where some of the books are  entirely irrelevant time-wasting.  Probably better for him to just... stop, and then have someone do a novelization after the TV show comes up with an ending for it.  Otherwise we're going to get Lucas'd pretty soon as readers.

I would have to say absolutely not. Releasing the book in tandem with the new season is exactly the kind of stuff marketing execs cream their pants over. Think back to Spider-Man 3 where in the comics Spidey suddenly started wearing his black costume again. Think of Prince of Persia, where a new game from the Sands of Times series was released just in time for the Jake Gyllenhaal movie.

They don't care if the cross promotion matches or makes sense, just that there IS Cross promotion. The show will make people buy the book, and the book will make people watch the show. They're not gonna sit on it so the show can play "catch up."

Publishers, sit on MONEY? Are you crazy?

One thing I noticed in Oberon's conversation with Tyrion was his offhand remark about Rhaegar Targaryen leaving his sister Elia for another woman.  We all know that Rhaegar kidnapped Lyanna Stark which just smacked me in the face as another clue to Jon Snow not being Edd's bastard son but really the child of Rhaegar and Lyanna.  This would make him Aemon Targaryen's great-great nephew who we saw looking after Jon during the treason inquiry.   Jon would also be Daenerys' nephew.

I don't think "kidnapping" is the right term since that story varies greatly depending on who tells the story.

The group I was with (none of which has read the books) was very confused as to why the watch would suddenly defer to Aemon during the trial when he basically just dismissed everything.  I had to explain that the old man was literally the oldest mother farker on the whole planet.  Easily the man with the greatest amount of tenure in the history of the Black Watch.  If he told them to strip the entire group down to bare skin and do a couple laps around the wall they would be hard pressed to argue with him.

why bring back Ser Dontos now? Weird. I forgot how his storyline played out anyway.

And wasn't Arya's revenge killing for Lommy in Book Six, which hasn't even come out yet? I thought that he died in one of those preview chapters.

He was part of a plot to smuggle Sansa out of Kings Landing...

I did mean to put kidnapping in quotes as, yes, the story varies to protect Lyanna, IMO

Good catch on your part.

I vaguely remember that but I thought there was something else he was supposed to do that another character did last year. But I honestly can't keep it all straight, which is fine with me.

That and Michael Huisman was freed up after Treme' ended.  I'm assuming his role on Nashville is over, too.

Is there a precedent for girl that started a show younger than 18, and showing boobage once she crossed the threshold?

doglover: Will-Mun: being nimble enough with astiletto blade to make due against some soldiers.

I think we have all learned our GOT lessons that if you fight fairly and with honour and you end up getting killed.

Melting down a house's valyrian steel sword and turning it into two swords for your own house may not be a greater crime than killing your guests under your roof, but it's close. Tywin is a real dick.

I thought he was going to have it heated and bent and have it added to the Throne. That would have been a badass move.

It will most certainly come back to bite them all in the ass.

Except maybe for Jaime. I'm starting to think the 4th season will center on Jaime's attempts at redemption and Arya's attempts at revenge.  Also, Joffrey's toast, probably sooner than we think. Cersei might make it, but not in any way she'll find pleasant.

/No, I haven't read the books, and don't care much to hear any more about them.  The show's its own narrative.

He was supposed to offer her a boat out of Kings Landing, last season, for whatever reason, they made Little Finger offer that and she turned it down. I guess that's to setup the acceptance of it after the Purple Wedding for Little Finger to smuggle her out then to the Vale.

Um, she got like a lesson and a half before everything fell to pieces, and most of that involved chasing cats. She's not a swordswoman, yet. Not by a long shot.

stoli n coke: Part of the initial agreement to pick up the show was that he disclose to Benioff and Weiss how the story ends.

They also have the advantage that the adaptation isn't slavish to the original. They've been willing to take liberties with the story (usually to good effect... as long as they aren't marking time in the Danny thread). This gives them freedom to conclude the series as they see fit without stepping on GRRM's canon.

It's not that hard to whittle down GRRM's work.  He's written several storylines that have gone/go nowhere, and he's badly in need of an aggressive editor.

The drunk knight doesn't do anything important other than be Littlefinger's gopher until the wedding, no reason to simply not use Littlefinger directly.  They need the drunk for the wedding though

You're correct that the dude she killed in the preview chapter was the one she killed last night.  Since she never got needle back in the show when escaping from Harren Hall, she had to kill him there to get it back.  Beyond that, one low level Lannister goon on the list is no more important than another.  Nobody will care if she kills some other minion in 2 seasons outside the play

doglover: In a sword fight, physics plays a big role. A much stronger opponent has an edge. An adult woman and an adult man have some serious disparity, on average. That's why Japanese samurai traditionally trained daughters to use pole weapons. Upper body strength is a lot less important with a naginata than a sword or club. Aria isn't even an adult, yet.

Not really talking about toughness. Just. That arrogant smirking hotness. Irreverent. Reckless. I dunno. I find Bronn hot in a similar way, although he's a lot milder and more casual.

New Daario was too mopey and emo and quiet. Can't see that boy ever being bold.

New Daario is not tough enough, not arrogant enough, and not flamboyant enough.  His whole flower speech was lame limp-wristed garbage.  Book Daario's advice on strategy would be to destroy a city and kill/rape everyone in it, and would have no comment about how to rule over the people afterwards, because he doesn't care about humanity nor does he care about ruling.  All he cares about is being the baddest MFer around.  New Daario doesn't have any of the traits of book Daario.  Old Daario wasn't perfect and I won't disagree that he was too pretty, but he had the nihilistic arrogance and swagger that comes across in the book.

That depends. In the books she's been keeping a careful eye on Littlefinger and picking things up along the way and learning his ways of underhand dealing. Wouldn't surprise me if she eventually has him killed and takes over his little network of spies and so forth.

This.  The only reason she's still alive at all is because she's kept her mouth shut while watching and learning the game from everyone around her.  She's not supremely interesting, but I like that she's not nearly as stupid and vapid as she seemed to be in the beginning.

I love that they're setting her up to be someone who can actually outmaneuver Littlefinger. Especially since she looks like a young Cat and I imagine he'll be even more smitten when she ends up better than him at all of that.

You can see Littlefinger growing over-confident as he gains more power.  I would love it above all things if he completely underestimates Sansa and get farked.
