living in Juneau, that's kind of the last thing I'd want.   I like the isolation and the fact that while we have millions of cruise ship passengers each year, we don't have slow-moving fleets of RVs on the roads.

well, there's also more to it than that. The lease is up in august for them, after 30 years, and the new developer wants a rent increase of about 600% from them. They want to basically gut that whole area from the hotel to the gas station and put in two apartment buildings and high end shops. Goodrich's does some awesome meat and booze, but they can't go high-end and keep their customer base.

2014-04-06 01:33:01 AM
also, next week there will be no show, as the alaska folk festival will be happening all week, and the station plays it live.  that said, all next week on KRNN from about 7pm-11pm or so, there will be a wide selection of live music being played, so if you're interested, tune in.

I like a good pale ale. Not the hops bombs that seem to be popular these days, but they are much easier drinking than a stout or tripel.

I do like hoppy beers in general, but also am a big fan of stouts, bocks, and negra modelo is one of my favorites.  my all-time favorite beer, if I had to choose one, would be Duvel, but it's so damned strong that it's not for every day.

Are you referring to that place on Grand River?

Goodriches on trowbridge and harrison.

guess the owner has been pretty much surviving in alcohol sales and contracts the past few years, and that has suffered since Snyder pulled the governor's functions contract with them

Damn. That was where I went when I lived on campus - it was within staggering distance. They've been around forever.
/It was inevitable: The big distributors have been buying up and undercutting the small guys for a couple of decades.

well, there's also more to it than that.

ELFCO used to have a decently comprehensive selection of beers. (And farking fantastic summer fruits.)

Mine's a 7.9% Double IPA. Mmm

Gah, just Fat Tire over here.  Had a jones for them a while ago.

Although the Alaska Brewing Co. Free Ride IPA is pretty good.

I don't care all that much for the Free Ride, but i am trying out their Icy Bay IPA tonight, which I hadn't seen previously.

[untappd.s3.amazonaws.com image 640x640]

Do you like the Pale Ales? they just ... well the hops in the ones I've had, overdone to say the least but then again my favs are stouts, dunkels, and negro so....

I do like hoppy beers in general, but also am a big fan of stouts, bocks, and negra modelo is one of my favorites.  my all-time favorite beer, if I had to choose one, would be Duvel, but it's so damned strong that it's not for every day.

I don't stick with any one type of beer, or music, or food, or anything, really, very long.  like to jump around and try different things.

I'm still at the wannabe beer snob level, but usually go for a nice amber, red, or brown with a good flavor to it.  Slowly branching out into IPAs, haven't sampled that many yet.

Just go back to the begining as a base beer Busch light is the least wort of the bad, cheap and really for a pilsner is not all bad, decent for what it is.

up here, we drink Rainier for that.   I don't mind it after mowing the yard or something, but honestly, I'd rather have a pale ale.

Well yea you have base beer like Busch lite or what is it rainier then a 6 of the good stuff whatever hey, I also use mu cheapo beer for cooking.

I've never really had a "red" beer that appealed to me, and I don't like fruit beers much, but other than that, there's not a lot I don't like at least a little.  Pilsners and lagers aren't my favorite, but sometimes they have their place.

I thought of you in the ceviche thread the other day... did you know it's fun and easy to make your own lox?

I've been known to turn a nice chinook or two I just pulled out of Lake Superior into gravlax.

I haven't been able to figure out the difference between gravadlax and lox.  Maybe it's the dill/other spices.

gravlax is a salt-sugar cure with alcohol and herbs and spices, pressed with weights to drive out the moisture.  lox is just a cold-cured salmon, with less flavoring added.

I do salt/sugar/black pepper, with fresh dill and smushed in the fridge with heavy thing (I may have used a dictionary once).  So gravlax is the thing I make, I suppose.

And to make you Alaskans laugh, one of the rivers in New Mexico (driving distance from me in AZ) is stocked with salmon... so there's a snagging season in the Southwest.

very different from normal zester. different blade/tine setup, size, and sharpness. Best example to illustrate the difference is hard spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. A normal zester would tear chunks out of these, whereas with the microplane my nutmeg (for example) looks sanded and polished, almost a work of art when half used and the planed portion is as fine as being put through a spice/coffee burr grinder.

soosh: itsaback: Actually Soosh, I wanted to ask you what Library Management software you might recommend. I need to rebuild my Library due to several drives failing simultaneously.

I wish I had one.  I have over 2TB of music, but I just use Windows Explorer and Foobar, honestly.

I am somewhere near that, I was using MusicBee lately, my Llibrary was recovered and spread among several drives creating many dupes of which many contain errors/missing data. I am at the point of dumping it all and starting over.  Love Delta Blues

msupf: ery different from normal zester. different blade/tine setup, size, and sharpness.

Ubuntu used to be my favorite distro, but they really jumped the rails with Unity.   Mint has been my favorite for a while now.  It's got damned near everything you need pre-installed, and adding more stuff is easy as hell.
