(Jamaica Observer)   NYC Police: car flips into Queens creek; four killed. Hey, I've got an idea - let's leave the colon out of the headline   (jamaicaobserver.com) divider line 60

I think the reporter wanted to, really really wanted to write, "these girls died a horrible, horrible death in an absolutely desolated mud- and trash-filled hell pit."

But held back.

Lock'n Load: Scene of the mishap: http://goo.gl/maps/2wBqP a real shiathole

typical looking industrial area basically anywhere in the northeastern US.

FTFY.  I wouldn't be able to tell NY from NJ, PA, DE, or DC given that photo.

Why would they even need to mention the police in the original headline? Is this merely alleged to have occurred?

Does it add anything to mention the source in the headline?

Also the victims' names are all really something- reason enough to avoid such names.

ArcadianRefugee: It means they've changed the headline since this thread was submitted and those who saw it pre-change are too stupid to realize this.

And submitters who submit headlines with typos not realizing newspapers have editors are too stupid to breathe.

Ok, I read the article twice and read this thread twice and I still don't get it.

Try reading the linked article's headline again.

Probably trying to figure out why subby is saying they should have left out the semi colon.  Or maybe that was just me at first.

Wow, the ignorance here is mind boggling. Is English a second language for all you not getting it?

Oh come on, that's not mind boggling.  I went to school in the 80s, usage of the colon and semicolon was never actually taught to us.  I get the two names, not usage, confused from time to time since the semicolon isn't just half a colon.    That or it was like midnight on a Saturday that i was wondering what was wrong with creek; four  rather than noticing the linked article had police car, not police: car.

What is mind boggling is the compulsion of someone late on a Saturday night to assert some sense of pseudo-superiority without actually contributing anything to the conversation,

Well, that's fark for ya. You would have found this more routine and not so surprising. Been here long?

dstanley: ArcadianRefugee: trappedspirit: Four killed on NY after car flips New into Queens creek

I don't get it.  Is it the 'on' instead of 'in'?  It doesn't have a colon.   Does that mean it was left out like you suggest?

It means they've changed the headline since this thread was submitted and those who saw it pre-change are too stupid to realize this.

I thought I was experiencing early-onset dementia. Christ.

Who said anything about it being early? ;p

Apparently, it's in Newfoundland.

Ever driven through Pennsylvania? There's a town named Intercourse! The road signs directing you there (ie. "Intercourse 5mi") got stolen so often the highway department finally stopped replacing them because it was costing too much. And not far away, for those who now can't find Intercourse? Blue Ball.

And of course, there's Hell, Michigan, which needless to say freezes over every single year.

Also in Michigan, on I-75, exit 69 is Big Beaver Rd.
