Its perfectly safe. As long as it actually is heroin, and as long as the user knows how to dose. Its been around forever.

/Do not condone the use of heroin.

That is not a legitimate reason to ban them.  Unless you are talking about injecting OTHER people with heroin, which would be assault.

Agreed.

Pot should be like beer, sold in every gas station.

Shrooms, LSD, Ecstacy, and DMT should be available to people with a license. (DXM is currently available legally)

Cocaine could be available on an extremely limited basis to licensed users who are monitored somehow. Or it could just be illegal.

PCP, Heroin, Crack, Meth, and Bath Salts are all too extreme for anyone to fark with and should be illegal.

Ketamine is just stupid. Whippits are stupid.

And retains them, actually.

All drugs should be legal. Just across the board. Use should be regulated by common sense, compassion, and safety concerns. Like alcohol.

I wouldn't classify alcohol as being regulated by common sense, compassion, and safety concerns.  It's regulated by law, and there are many circumstances where it is illegal to possess or consume it.

There is a notion that, should a great amount of your populace NEED to stay whanged out of their skull pans on some sort of substance most of the time, that maybe the problem is the society that makes people need to shut it off with whatever substance is at hand.  The only way to have a drug free America is when Americans can wake up and say "Nah, I don't really want to get smashed silly.  My life has purpose, love and meaning and I'm sort of digging that reality."  Then again, you'll always have short sighted and lazy people for whom the off switch is more attractive than a place in the most functional society imaginable.

So anyway, I was at the ATM machine, putting in my PIN number when this dude bro tells me it was basic fundamentals that the usual custom was regulated by law. Since we were in such close proximity I asked him to spell it out in detail when and unexpected surprise made us revert back to the beginning of the conversation we were talking about!

If all drugs were legal, the number of weird illegal drugs would drop tremendously. Meth is deadly and insanely popular because it is cheap and easy to make--any fool with access to a few chemicals and a high-school understanding of how to mix liquids can make up a batch and sell it for a profit; so it's attractive to those who want both the high and the $$$ that coke provides, but don't want the risk that dealing with the cartels entails. Make coke and amphetamines legal again, and the need for meth (the bathtub gin of our day) would mostly vanish. There'd always be some market for it, like there is for moonshine; but it would be considerably smaller.

The same is true for bath salts, ketamine, PCP and all the other weird shiat people use to get high--they use them not because they get you especially high, or are especially cheap, but they're available, do the job, and are generally ahead of the legal curve. When pot and acid were what the feds were looking for, people went for pills and heroin. When they took the pills off the market and went after the heroin, it was cocaine. When the crackdown on coke started, it was meth and ecstasy. And so on. Now meth is the big bad scary drug, and bath salts are the weirdo drug of choice.

Let people have a way of getting high legally and without the risk and danger of arrest, and not only will the number of criminals drop dramatically, the number of people using drugs will drop, and so will the number of flaky strange drugs. If you need to feel "up" and can get a prescription for amphetamines and also a screening for depression, you won't need to visit the corner meth-head for a pick-me-up.

All drugs should be legal. Just across the board. Use should be regulated by common sense, compassion, and safety concerns. Like alcohol.

I question if common sense or compassion can actually be applied to government policy. But what we do know that attempting to legislate morality is usually not going to work. Anything that a person does to themselves is not a governmental concern. If I choose to inject myself with a drug and I am not harming anyone else, what concern is that of anyone else?

But Silly Season! You may overdose and then society will have to pick up your hospital bills, or have you on welfare that will minimally support your addiction, or have to bury you!

To which I reply, the effort to prevent me from doing that to myself (as demonstrative fact) will put me in jail or prison (which will most likely keep me from getting a job), or shot by police. In addition the societal cost has been the loss of civil liberty, the eroding of the constitution and the largest prison system in the world. The supposed cure is far, far worse than the problems it addresses.

The only rationalization for why we pursue this senseless policy looks to me to be morality ( *cough* religion *cough*) based.

No lie.  I've always figured at least some local border patrol personnel had to be in on it.  Anyone with a set patrol route would eventually notice things no matter how much ground they covered.  Of course I'm finally learning that incompetence often looks a lot like collusion.

Gyrfalcon: number of criminals drop dramatically

You probably deal with this kind of stuff a lot and it peppers your language, but I would argue they are not criminals who break immoral laws.

Prostitution, drugs, gambling: nothing about these things need be illegal per se. All the supposed sins of vice are much preferable to the current state of the American system and anything that could be wrong with these industries is already illegal universally for moral reasons.

Take murder. Murder is the killing of a human* without a good reason. If a drug dealer goes to some mook's house and kills him, that's like Walmart just shooting someone they caught shoplifting right there in Aisle 3. Simply unacceptable. Murder is crime enough without making criminals out of people who just want to some altered physical chemistry.

If we were to legalize things properly, then all of the vice activities could be monitored and the rule of beneficial law could extend it's Aegis over them as well. You can't be choked to death in the woods if you're a waiter at a restaurant and the diner doesn't feel like paying. Why should a street walker have to run that risk? Let them band together and open up some brothels. They want it, the johns want it, and history supports the idea. Opium dens could be conveniently located near research hospitals and offer their own trained EMC staff and OD prevention measures such as requiring membership cards, frequent physicals, and monitoring the quality of the drugs. Casinos are already easily run all over the world without much incident.

There's literally no reason for most vice crime to be crime except that some big wig, who uses his status as a politician to get drugs and whores at casinos regardless of what the law says, appealed to the pearl clutcher vote.

*I would gladly extend that to animals, too, because frankly murdering animals is common enough for serial killers we should watch anyone who kills wantonly very closely indeed.

Yes.  I believe drugs should all be legal, and I believe people should have access to objective information concerning their structure, effects, etc.  Erowid is actually a decent site in this respect, devoted to collecting and organizing data about various drugs.

Someone mentioned whippits (nitrous oxide).  Those are actually legal.  In addition, the data indicate that nitrous oxide inhalation is quickly metabolized and appears to have no negative or lasting side effects.
