NYRBill: Have the Cubs been mathematically eliminated yet?

Nope but the Mets have.

The Pirates are currently leading their division. They beat St. Louis 12-2 yesterday. They have a good team and may make the playoffs.

It's a long season. There's still plenty of time for some guy to try and catch a fly ball with his mouth

We're only four games into the season, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have already seen their biggest play of the year can barely get a half-full stadium on a Friday night.

You should have seen the O's open with the Sox, I don't think it was even a quarter full.

Yes, because teams regularly sell out games on 3 hour rain delays

What in heaven s name are you talking about.
Opening day was sold out with 60$ standing room only tickets?
The other two games were packed as well.

23,342 - 60.8% full.  Not sure if that number indicates tickets sold as opposed to fannies in seats but my guess is tickets sold.

Weather forecast called for a couple lines of severe thunderstorms and high winds to hit between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. The weather in PirateCity resolved itself to a little bit of heavy rain early with stiff winds and after an hour or so of rain delay, the game commenced.  If the ThunderBoomers popped up a little more to the south, it would've been a 3 hour delay.  Guaranteed, it cut down on the walk-up ticket sales to the game.

Russell Martin made an excellent play on a nearly perfect bunt without a half-filled bucket of popcorn that eked out the fan's memorable grab for the defensive play of the game.

/ just the facts, m'am.
// we play real baseball here, it's going to be a lot of fun watching the 2014 Bucs

And I'd run through a wall to play for Clint Hurdle.

Okay, as someone who's visited the Pitt campus just to find the wall, I have to ask - does anyone know why in the hell they built the left side stands the way they did?  It just has never looked like it was necessary to me.

Can o' corn. Or bucket.

Where did "can o' corn" come from anyway?

Back in the late 60's, the Bucs were playing Chicago in Wrigley, I think.  Late in the game, shallow pop fly to center, Matty Alou camped underneath. IIRC, the quote from Bob Prince was "a giant can of golden bantam" then Matty just flat out dropped the ball.  Captured defeat from the jaws of victory.  Maybe I should goggles for a refresher.

Goggles sez "a #10 can of golden bantam", and yes, that was Bob's usual call, but in that particular situation, my poor brain tells me he switched up anid said "giant" instead.  Oh well, it was abiut 46 years ago ...

Yes, because teams regularly sell out games on 3 hour rain delays

That notwithstanding, I'm planning on lining up at 7am at Busch on Monday for a  chance to buy opening day comps, along with 1000 or so other fans willing to do the same.

/things are different, here in the heart of Cardinal nation (and winning the pennant helps)
//respek to the Bucs last year and this, we appreciate the division "race" actually meaning something again

I love baseball but root for the hometown Bucs.  St. Louis has GREAT history and always love it when they come to town.  I got to see Gibson, Torre, et. al. in their prime.  This should be a great battle for the division this year.  And I agree Cincy will be a spoiler at best.

/ our first 26 games are all Central Division ...

Saved Town Talk bread wrappers and you could get a general admission outfield bench seat for free.  The bus in was four bits and if you showed a ticket stub you rode free to get home.  Grand all day adventure.
