I hope it doesn't devolve into them just making up completely unbelievable names that no one would ever have for the various officers.

Ya, that's the least funny skit they've done that I've seen so far. They hit it out of the park a lot, but some things just fall completely flat on their face and die.

I just realized that some of my favorite bits of theirs involve them butchering names.

Seriously? That seems to be one of their most popular sketches. The amount of effort and attention that go into their show really make the difference. Chappell is funnier and has a more likeable vibe, but he wasn't as committed to his show as these guys are.

Yep. I never even smiled at it, and I've watched it twice because friends think it's the funniest thing ever.  I like a lot of their skits, one of my favorites is the Ghetto substitute, so it's not just names.  I dunno.

It was funny when the names were believable ghetto names (D'Squarius Green Jr, Tyroil Smoochie-Wallace, Jackmerius Tacktheritrix, L'Carpetron Dookmarriot) to lampoon actual pro athletes with ridiculous names. As soon as they went over the top with ridiculous sound effects and spelling out characters (EEEEEEEE, X-Wing @ Aliciousness, TJ RJ AJ Backslashinfourth V, Torque [construction noise] Lewith), it stopped being a satire of ghetto naming conventions and turned into avant-garde weirdness. It's like they ran out of ideas and just started pulling shiat out of anywhere.

And then they made a sequel of that nonsense (although I like Fudge and The Artist Formerly Known as Mousecop) which wasn't as funny.

But then they made the Hingle McCringleberry excessive celebration skit which was a nice call back.
