$174,000 should allow you to live 'decently' anywhere. Specially when you consider all the free perks congress gets.

As soon as they overturn the federal minimum wage, they'll have earned that much needed pay raise.

They don't make enough. Maintaining two residences and having to constantly scramble for cash makes them more likely to flirt with corruption and discourages honest careful people from serving.

If they aren't getting paid enough they need to quit and go work for Walmart.

He didn't know the salary when he applied for the job?

2014-04-05 08:54:14 AM
Why? Has the cost of renting hotel rooms by the hour gone up that much?

/I'm implying they are whores you see

Moran says congress is underpaid plagiarizes headline of story that was already greenlighted yesterday.

FTFY subby.

/get a brain!

How much were they making before they ran for office maintaining just the one home.

$10/hr * 2000hrs/ year * 40 years = $800k. In less than five years you make as much as many Americans will make in their lifetimes, Moran.

/ If it's such a financial hardship, STFU and go home.

Seems like that system is already in place.

I agree with the first sentence.

I do not agree with the second sentence.

Here's a crazy thought - performance bonuses. Reduced the deficit? Cut the number of non-violent offenders in prison? Lowered the unemployment rate? Get a bonus, based on a formula set by an independent commission, that can total up to 100% of their salary.

Maximum cost: $100 million a year. It's a no-brainer.

Congress & Senate both suck. They are all under-worked and overpaid. Cut them back to minimum wage.

2014-04-05 09:06:58 AM
They sure are.  That's who so few of them return after their first term.

Oh, wait...

I don't begrudge them their salaries, and professionals should be well compensated.  That said, whining about it to a population that has seen it's spending power diminish for the last 30 years is pretty ignorant.

Another one. Those fat farks only have on job...

If anything, Congress is OVERpaid. Especially considering that their actual salary is nothing compared to the  bribes and kickbacks donations they get from their backers.

Outlaw, or severely restrict, those 'donations', and post-term "perks", and then MAYBE we can talk about raising that salary. But for now, the sheer corruption of America's government is absolutely embarrassing, and it won't start to heal until big money is out of the process.

/Yeah, not gonna happen I know, but it's nice to dream.

I think it's time we start importing foreign nationals to represent us in our government. A Chinese senator will be very happy to do the job for $24,000 a year. Think of all the money we'd save. Plus, those Chinese people eat so much fish and vegetables that we could also afford to cut back on healthcare spending for congress members. Really, it's win-win no matter how you slice it. Just don't drink the Coca Cola.

Peg their salaries to 3x the median household income of their constituents. Want a raise? Get one for your constituents first. Do they like their lifetime medical benefits? They can have them back when 50%+1 of their constituents have lifetime medical benefits. Do they like their defined benefit pensions? Well, they'll have a crapass 401k until 50%+1 of their constituents have pensions. Etc, etc, etc

What's his gripe? He must have all kinds of connections with job creators. He should try one.

He probably assumed lobbyists would be on his doorstep Day 1 with big bags of cash.

Here's the solution to this two residences thing: Congressional Dorms. Buy some hotel or apartment complex, renovate it if needed, and any Congressperson staying in Washington is required - by law - to stay there, rent free. Make the facilities nice; not like Waldorf Astoria but good enough that people are comfortable. Make sure there are several nice restaurants and shopping near or on-site. Private shuttle-bus between the Dorms and the Capital/White House. On site TV studios at the Dorms for media to do interviews.

How about they can get a raise if they abolish gifts from lobbyists.

How much does it take to bribe a mechanic to pass your car's safety inspection? How much does he earn?

Looking at the proportions, and looking at the money lobbyists have to throw around, just how much would you have to pay congresscritters to make a serious dent in their bribability?

Considering they're exempt from insider-trading laws, just how greedy do they have to be in order to argue for a pay raise?

When Congress raises the minimum wage, I'll consider raising their pay. In fact, I'd be thrilled to make a compromise: federal employee and congressional pay must be raised together by the same %.

Lolwut?

Do they like their defined benefit pensions?

You mean, the one they pay in to with their own money, that has the same terms as any other federal employee?

Because when you have incompetent employees, the answer is to pay them less, to incentivize them and attract better talent.

Brilliant plan.

What if it was tied to social security cost of living increases?

The problem is that Social Security costs are pushed to the future. Raising the SS COLA just moves forward the date SS goes under. If that date goes from 2040 to 2030, a congressman wouldn't give two farks about it.
