Plucky overachievers Man Utd will be without Wayne Rooney due to a toe injury. Even worse, he's doubtful for Bayern.

If Rooney is out and RvP is still out, where will United's goals come from? Can Welbeck create them on his own? I thought he was always more effective as part of a strike tandem.

Actually, setting today's games aside for the moment, I have a question for everybody while we're waiting for the games to begin: as the Premier League season winds down, what is your biggest fear about your club? Is it falling out of CL contention? Relegation? Is it your coaching situation or your player situation? What makes you gnaw your fingernails down to the bone?

I got nothin'. And of course Utd need at least one goal (plus a couple of miracles) if they are to progress.

I agree about Welbeck, he is most effective inside the six yard box, poaching scraps and feeding off the chaos caused by a primary striker. Mata of course is cup-tied. So I think we're down to Welbeck and Hernandez, and the latter is very similar in style to Welbeck

I suppose Moyes could do something wacky like play Kagawa up front with Welbeck.

/Is it too late to recall Macheda from loan?

Injuries. If Liverpool can stay healthy during these last 6, then the CL is pretty much a lock. Plus, I want to see Stevie, Luis, Studge, Hendo, and Radio Raheem during the WC.

He could always line up like City.

Biggest fear for Arsenal? A few of them, actually. They sort of swirl around, but this is the situation that keeps me up at night:

- Arsenal fail to qualify for fourth place in the league and miss out for CL football for the first time since Wenger came on board, finishing fifth for the first time in over a decade.

- Not adjusting to this, Wenger does his usual nothing during the first 7/8ths of the summer transfer window, waiting to see what "top, top quality" players he can get in the end, while Manchester United and Chelsea act early in the window to pick up some of the best available players. Players don't want to come to Arsenal because it doesn't pay enough to miss out on CL football.

- With a disastrous start and fans howling, Wenger and the board finally agree to part ways before Christmas. With a lack of available coaches, the board backs the only coach available at that time...Harry f*cking Redknapp

A lot would have to go wrong for that to happen. Tomorrow will really determine where Arsenal is able to finish. Everton is excellent at home, but Arsenal is pretty good on the road (a few disastrous games aside) and Ramsey is back in the squad for tomorrow. I don't expect him to be a difference maker in one game, but Arsenal played so, so much better when he was on the pitch. I also don't see Wenger ever leaving mid-season. He's a stubborn old mule like that.

The "not doing anything during the early part of the transfer window" part, though, is classic Wenger.

David Moyes might be available, and he's the perfect manager for a team that consistently just misses out on CL qualification.

What I've heard (if England's news rags are to be trusted) is that Spurs have already met with him and he's expected to arrive at WHL after the World Cup. He himself said that he wanted to manage in England, and Spurs would probably be the best fit of the teams that need a coach that are in need of structure and that are also well positioned in the upper half of the table.

Poor Rodriguez. That's a huge blow for Southampton.

Ya really hoping ramsey hits the ground running when we finally see him on the field again. Amazing how much of a factor hes been on the team this season. My biggest fear though is simply that Wenger would insta-resign if arsenal finish 5th, and that could goa long way to being avoided with a win this weekend.

For Swansea, it's injuries. They just got everyone healthy for the first time since the start of the season pretty much.

For Real, it's collapsing after a good mid-season run. That and their penchant for buying players where they don't need them. I'm fine with right-back purchase if Arbeloa's gone, but everywhere else the team's already got enough players.

Flock is a kind word, sheep is closer to the truth. All it takes is one journalist to have an original idea and as long as its not too complicated the rest follow. To give a great example the crap about Becham. He has never been Engalnd quality since he left Real but every time England play he had been championed by the press, so much so that every England manager had him in the squad just to get the muppets of their back.

Journalists in Britain have less technical knowlege of the game than Brian Clough yet write like they have a clue.

You're not going to believe this. He was brought down shoulder-to-shoulder racing a defender to the ball, jumped right back up and continued the chase without any flailing or appealing. And somewhere in all that his thumb either got jammed or stepped on, and he needs to get it fixed up.

Yes, and now I'm slapping myself. I knew he'd scored once before, but for a moment I thought it was in the CL. And obviously that couldn't be right since he's cup-tied.

It is your FFPL report!

img.fark.net

At the top my lead has been greatly eroded by nathanjr. Top three remains unchanged but Sachbash creeps up into 6th. Plenty of Arsenal supporters in the top, top echelons. At the bottom Cognitive_Displaysia is probably wondering what might have been if he'd had a beating heart for each round.

Chupacabra_Sandwich, Cajnik and Preebs I have lost count so I'm arbitrarily listing this as your Strike 2 zombie warning.

Dead_for_tax_reasons made his slow but steady way to 125 for the week. Incrementally better was krej55, using a +90 from Fulham Vs Everton to haul in 130. Score of the week though belongs to Princips_Sandwich with 135. Only one wrong result in the set - CP beating Chelsea. At the other end, Luckless_Wonder registered a Feeble 15, Mr_H zenned and Gonz_Hotspur was the only negative score of the round with a -25. Banker on the Toon Vs Southampton - presumably an attempt at satire.

Scouserduck, krej55 and dead_for_tax_reasons all moved up three. StRalphtheLiar dropped down three. I claim the BB presidency from Sachbash. Plenty of 20's about now. Hmm. The_Envoy clings onto Page 1 over MNMarkPW at the top of Page 2. He the last Page 1er to not make it to 1000 points yet.

Adubs86 is now the median FFPL player. As a league we rose 8 spots to 136th.

Chelsea's wage bill overtaken by Manchester United for first time since 2004. Bonus: last season. Before Fellaini, Mata, and Rooney's new deal. United's wage bill will go down a lot in the summer, then up a lot too. Hopefully they all have Champions League clauses.

How To Survive A Liverpool Title Win

The Roberto Martinez effect: How the Spaniard has improved Everton in his first season at the helm. The youth bit is interesting. A Moyes myth.

Some (old) quotes from Tim Howard about the differences between the two managers.

2014-04-05 05:10:42 PM
Sir Alex Ferguson, May 2013: "It's a young squad, with a lot of good young players, and a lot of them are going to get better. But the big test is to win it three times in a row, as they've done before, so I hope the boys can do that"

David Moyes, March 2014:  "People are aware there is a squad that is a bit more ageing, so I think it would have been a tough season for whoever was in charge of Manchester United this year. And I actually think if Sir Alex was here this year it would be difficult for Sir Alex as well and I'm sure he would be aware of it."

689908: How To Survive A Liverpool Title Win

That made me chuckle. I especially liked this comment:  I also really, really don't think we can say we knocked united off their perch. It's more like United went "ooh, look. I wonder what those spikey things are all the way down their, let's have a closer look" and just sort of dropped off their perch. Like a bloated bored lemming.

And on the 2nd comment, who do you think was being more truthful, SAF or The Chosen One?

/I don't think it was Fergie.

I think if you're looking for an ageing, struggling squad, there's plenty there to suit your argument, and if you're looking for young players who can get better, there's plenty there to suit your argument too.

Moyes hasn't shown any interest in developing young players so far.

Fair point. I just don't know if things would be any better with the kids. This was always going to be a bit of a transition year, they've just failed to live up to reduced expectations.

The only change has been the manager and coaching staff. They'll get rid of several vastly experienced (old :-)) players in the summer, and replace them with maybe 4/5/6 first team players, which means more so-called transition next season too.

Things probably wouldn't be better this season with the kids, but there would at least be the promise of building something for the future. We could look at Powell or Zaha or Lingard or Michael Keane and say, 'Well, yeah, they're struggling, but they're young and learning and will be better next season.'

But what has actually happened is he has kept all the same players, made them all worse, blamed them, and convinced lots of people that the champions aren't good enough for his midtable tactics.

Maybe. If he somehow gets bumped from the FA Cup though, he's almost surely gone.

I think what hurts the most is how good Arsenal looked at the beginning of this season. They looked crisp and sharp, good offensive movement and great defensive shape. The last 10 games--even games they've won--they look like a Sunday park team scrambling around. It's baffling to see this team and think it's the same team that produced one of the best goals of the season against Norwich just a few months ago.

It's baffling to see this team and think it's the same team that produced one of the best goals of the season against Norwich just a few months ago.

Well, you've lost Ramsey, Wilshere and Walcott for long stretches of the season, while Ozil's form cooled.

2014-04-06 09:01:26 AM

Norfolking Chance: We look good on the ball but we just can't put the ball in the back of the net and let in sloppy goals.

One more win and we might be safe. One more.

Next week is huge for both of us, especially with your brutal last 4 matches afterwards. I wish you luck, I would hate to stay up at Norwichs expense, but it would be better than the alternative.

czetie: Arsenal fans: if Arsenal get bumped from the CL by Everton, is Wenger done?

I don't see the Board sacking him, but what I don't really know is where his head is at. Arsenal is in a great position in a lot of ways: decent youth program, stadium debt under control, still quite a few quality players. The question is how Wenger wants to go out. I don't see him leaving after a season of failure (and fifth place is not what most coaches would consider failure). Like any coach, I think he wants to go out on top. I think he'd only leave if he honestly felt he couldn't do it--I don't think he's in that frame of mind yet.

Princip's Sandwich: Maybe. If he somehow gets bumped from the FA Cup though, he's almost surely gone.

It would make the normal anti-Wenger crowd louder than ever and would put a whole lot of extra pressure on Wenger. It depends on how the season ends, though. I think dropping out of the top four would be a bigger deal than choking out of the FA Cup. But if both happen--I think he might decide to leave if both happen simultaneously this season.

Hey, Flamini can fix up his house now. 2-match ban for having 10 yellows.

2014-04-06 09:14:59 AM

Princip's Sandwich: Well, you've lost Ramsey, Wilshere and Walcott for long stretches of the season, while Ozil's form cooled.

Is that a factor? Absolutely. And the person in the prime position to address the known deficiencies was Wenger, who knew the issues going into the January window and picked up...an aging midfielder who was injured and has only played 30 minutes. Fans were begging for players to supplement the thin squad, and Wenger gambled with it. The gamble has failed.

If Wenger crashes out of the FA Cup and misses CL qualification, I don't know what will happen. If he gets one or the other, then I expect him to stay and his moves (or lack of moves) in the summer transfer window will likely determine his fate.

For some reason I had this as 1-1 and insured the Manchester United game.  I'm not sure WHY I did it that way, other then United screwing me over repeatedly this year but still..

So it never existed? How this team could use Viera in his pomp.

Meta-game for the afternoon. Which player from the past would you bring back to improve the current team?

For NUFC, a Peter Beardsley is my all time favourite player, but it is difficult to look past a healthy/fit Alan Shearer in respect of shouting, slapping and scoring.

Ok, I give in. I'm finally going to google where Portland is.

2014-04-06 09:45:02 AM
What I'd like to see:

At the 60-minute mark, bring in Ramsey for Arteta and the Ox for Giroud. Two big attacking threats and more mobility in midfield. Have Flamini hang back to take the holding midfield role and break up play so that Ramsey doesn't have to run too much and can play a more creative role. Move Ox to the outside and Podolski to the middle.

2014-04-06 09:49:48 AM

A lot of supporters would say Thierry Henry, which is understandable considering Giroud's many weaknesses up front, but I'd actually bring back Patrick Vieira. Arsenal has not had a player like him since he left.

And after this third goal, I'm suspecting that  Princip's Sandwich didn't actually go back to bed after my rude outburst.

I gave that game the full 90 and was in knots when the Timbers had a 4-2 lead due to poor decisions by the defenders.  When Negal came on, Sounders pressed and got the tie in thrilling fashion.  It was one of the best games from both I have seen.

Yeah that game was great.  I watched the first half of Toronto/Columbus which was good, DC/NE was actually good, and some of Philly/Chicago was good.  The disappointing game, surprisingly, was RSL/KC the rematch of the MLS Cup final.  Really chippy and not a lot of clear cut chances.  Thank geebus for MLS Live.

I think it's totally worth it. You can watch the matches live or whenever you want.  The quality is incredible, you can watch multiple matches at a time if you want, and you can get the games on your phone with their app which works great.  I'm a big DC fan who no longer lives in the area so I got it to watch their matches, but I watch so many more games now that I can watch them anywhere.  It's a great deal too as when you resubscribe you get 20% off each year so I got the entire season for like $50 or $55 bucks.

Pretty much what i was thinking, with maybe Tony Adams.

Arsenal can be kicked off the ball easily (not that Everton are doing this, they are just outplaying them) and one thing you couldn't do is kick Viera off the ball, plus he would sort out players on his own team who thought they could coast through a game. His battles with Roy Keane were great to watch.

For Norwich its much harder as we havn't realy had a golden era until the last few years. I would say Grant Holt as he is a much better player than most people think and is very good at setting up other strikers.

This is what I expected unfortunately. This year has been the same old arsenal story: play well long enough to get hopes up, then get decimated with injuries and not have the depth the manage them.

My only hope for CL qualification is based on Everton still has two Manchester games this year while Arsenal's are mostly bottom of the table teams.

Good luck with that.  I'm having flashbacks to last year's end of the season for Sounders FC.  It looked similar with bottom teams and no good came of any of it.

More along the lines of "stupid Crew."  They signed an exclusive deal with them and that even means if you have the "season pass" package you are hosed.  Only MLS club that has done it.

Considering the breakaways West Ham has had, I'm surprised they haven't scored a goal.  The back lines of both teams are making it Hell for the offenses.  If there is a goal scored, I expect it to come from a strike outside the box.

The quality exists. But the mental toughness has evaporated.

That's a toughy. For the MIGHTY Oxford United, I'd probably go with John Aldridge or Malcolm Shotton, even though Joey Beauchamp is my favorite player

No team has ever come from outside the Top 5 to win the league the following season.

Man City won the League Cup so the Europa League spot for that trophy should revert to whoever gets 6th in the EPL since City will go to the UCL. At least that's how I think it works.

Also, with the Liverpool win, Manchester United is officially eliminated from title contention.

4 of their last 5 are against the Old Big Four, with aways at Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge. Not even Sir Alex would've got them more than 4 points from that lot.

Seems that way. We have winnable fixtures heading in, with the exception of Tottenham away, but we'll need to play our absolute best to make it out.

depending on what everton does with their match in hand, 'pool's magic number is five for arsenal and seven (worst case scenario) for everton, meaning any combination of earned points by liverpool and/or lost points by arsenal or everton.

this assumes that the tremendous gd liverpool enjoy would still be intact, which i think is a safe assumption at this stage.

Dave's latest pearls of wisdom. I really do hope some United fan somewhere is collecting all of these.

On United's good away form: "Maybe there's a big expectation at Old Trafford to go and be a bit gung-ho and play in a real attacking style,"

Maybe you're at the wrong club. Just a thought.

On Fellaini: "Some of the stuff he has done with the ball on his chest has been great. I can see bits where the supporters probably want more than that."

2014-04-07 03:24:45 PM
I just want to know who decided to put this match on a Monday night. I mean, what were they thinking?

2014-04-07 03:28:05 PM
Spurs level

2014-04-07 03:28:56 PM
Aaaaand Adebayor squares things at 1. Had to be coming spurs creating too many chances

2014-04-07 03:29:45 PM
Thank goodness, Ade. Banker is in play again.

2014-04-07 03:30:03 PM
Ya there is really no reason why this game would have any interest for a Monday night

2014-04-07 03:35:55 PM
Adebayor is Spurs' top scorer with 9 goals.

desertgeek: I just want to know who decided to put this match on a Monday night. I mean, what were they thinking?

Chelsea and United are still in Champs League and there is some deal where teams can't play during Champs League games that were once in the Champs league even if they are no longer in the competition.  There could also be a rule where every team needs to play at least one prime time Monday game like in the NFL.  Spurs also have a very big following so maybe it's a combination of all these things.

2014-04-07 03:54:10 PM
How many people banked on Tottenham?

2014-04-07 03:56:59 PM

desertgeek: They just mentioned on NBCSN that if Man City finishes in the top 5, 6th place goes to Europa in the League Cup spot so that is confirmed.

Yep. There's a page with all the contingencies on the FA website somewhere, and it's terrifying. But the main two things to know are:

1) If the winner of the FA Cup is already qualified for the CL, the runner-up gets their Europa place. BUT if the winner of the League Cup is already qualified for the CL, the runner-up does not; the next qualified team in the league gets it. So if we make the reasonable assumption that Man City qualify for the CL, the Europa places go to 5th, 6th, and a team from the FA Cup.

2) If, hilariously, Man Utd were to win the CL and thereby qualify for next season as champions while finishing outside the top 4, the team in 4th would get bumped as the winner's league doesn't get a bonus place. So potentially it could be 4th, 5th and the FA Cup winners.

I know that Sky has to do a broadcast from the home ground of every team (and pay the money to the clubs to do so)  every season, even to the point that they have to pay a club the broadcast fee if they never visit. Happend to Norwich last year as Sky never visited but we still got the cash.

Princip's Sandwich: How many people banked on Tottenham?

Not me. I banked on Sunderland winning (mainly due to forgetting to send in predictions before Saturday)

2014-04-07 04:17:51 PM
And the Spurs score.

2014-04-07 04:19:43 PM
No more scoring please. I need this perfect.

/I would accept a Sunderland win though, just for the possibility of Cardiff being 20th.

2014-04-07 04:24:39 PM
So as it stands, Tottenham's GD on the year...is...-3?

That is absolutely farking despicable. Both Spurs and Newcastle should be taken back and shot for their absolutely awful offensive output this year given their talent.

/watch, Spurs actually develop some chemistry next year and do better.
//maybe
///or not

2014-04-07 04:32:08 PM
For purely selfish reasons I want Spurs to score a couple more.

2014-04-07 04:32:12 PM
Kane scores, and not a single JR call-out? I know there are some fWc farkers in here.

2014-04-07 04:36:56 PM
And erikson gets one. That  should just about do it

2014-04-07 04:37:28 PM
Dammit Sunderland. Ruined my perfect.

This.

One more goal of any kind please.

As one of the people who put my banker on this game, I'm hoping this scoreline stays, but it feels like there's one more goal in this game

Ask and ye shall receive apparently.  I think I'm still out of the top 5, but by less than I would have been had people gotten perfects on this match.  Plus this helps with all the people biatching about GD for some reason.

Very well done.

Ah, so there's the fix for Tottenham that AVB couldn't figure out and took Sherman forever to himself; play Sunderland.

I'm really not poking fun at your typo, but I think we should just call him "Sherman" for the rest of the season.

Shockingly, Spurs could now finish the season with a positive GD.

I'd like to say it was intentional, but no, it was a clear cock-up. And, I'd be honored if it become his new moniker for the rest of the season.

A paltry +30 for the week. I blame Saturday.

Which is odd...it's Mourinho that builds tanks.

Well for the first time in 3 weeks, forgetting to enter my Saturday predos cost me.  Overall, not too upset though and I just need to make sure I get the last 5 weeks in correctly.

+75 here. My banker on CP helped a little.

Maximum trolling: Everton finish 4th, but get bumped from the CL because Man Utd, against all probability, win the tournament. They and Arsenal (5th) go to the Europa League, in turn bumping Spurs (6th) from the competition. Spurs fans unsure whether to laugh or cry.

After reading this article, I'd almost love it if that happened.

/I actually want Everton to get 4th since I don't think Arsenal deserves to be in the CL.
//But if some people care more about a rival's accomplishments than their own team's possible accomplishment, screw them
