F*cking Arsenal

2014-04-06 09:05:32 AM
Ouch.

2014-04-06 09:06:22 AM
Good thing I insured this.

Langston: Game over.

Arsenal have too much quality to say that.  Amazing how different this is from a few weeks ago.

2014-04-06 09:10:00 AM
Nice save by Howard.

2014-04-06 09:13:14 AM
Remember when Arsenal beat this team 4-1 to advance in the FA Cup?

2014-04-06 09:14:27 AM
Hey, Flamini can fix up his house now. 2-match ban for having 10 yellows.

2014-04-06 09:14:59 AM

Princip's Sandwich: Well, you've lost Ramsey, Wilshere and Walcott for long stretches of the season, while Ozil's form cooled.

Is that a factor? Absolutely. And the person in the prime position to address the known deficiencies was Wenger, who knew the issues going into the January window and picked up...an aging midfielder who was injured and has only played 30 minutes. Fans were begging for players to supplement the thin squad, and Wenger gambled with it. The gamble has failed.

If Wenger crashes out of the FA Cup and misses CL qualification, I don't know what will happen. If he gets one or the other, then I expect him to stay and his moves (or lack of moves) in the summer transfer window will likely determine his fate.

Afternoon all.

In important news, I'm attempting slow-cooked spare ribs.

Insured a draw for this game.

Ribs sound good. I'm overdue.  I changed my pick from an insured win to an insured draw as well. At the moment, it seems starkly optimistic.

The quality exists. But the mental toughness has evaporated.

For some reason I had this as 1-1 and insured the Manchester United game.  I'm not sure WHY I did it that way, other then United screwing me over repeatedly this year but still..

Stimied in a Rut: Some great MLS matches today.

The Portland-Seattle game was a lot of fun to watch.  I wish they'd show more on tv without having to go to PPV :(

Speaking if Everton, Bryan Oviedo, who suffered an ugly leg break in the FA Cup 6 weeks ago is recovering well and may be fit in time for the World Cup.  Good news!

So it never existed? How this team could use Viera in his pomp.

Meta-game for the afternoon. Which player from the past would you bring back to improve the current team?

For NUFC, a Peter Beardsley is my all time favourite player, but it is difficult to look past a healthy/fit Alan Shearer in respect of shouting, slapping and scoring.

Ok, I give in. I'm finally going to google where Portland is.

2014-04-06 09:45:02 AM
What I'd like to see:

At the 60-minute mark, bring in Ramsey for Arteta and the Ox for Giroud. Two big attacking threats and more mobility in midfield. Have Flamini hang back to take the holding midfield role and break up play so that Ramsey doesn't have to run too much and can play a more creative role. Move Ox to the outside and Podolski to the middle.

2014-04-06 09:49:48 AM
And now it's 3-0, shortly after I came back. Sorry  Langston.

2014-04-06 09:51:01 AM
Wooooooooooooo Everton!!!!

2014-04-06 09:51:07 AM
Wow that was fantastic from Miralles Great work.

2014-04-06 09:51:51 AM
That's game over.

Man, Martinez is so much better than that other guy Everton had. You know, the Footballing Genius.

midpoint: Which player from the past would you bring back to improve the current team?

A lot of supporters would say Thierry Henry, which is understandable considering Giroud's many weaknesses up front, but I'd actually bring back Patrick Vieira. Arsenal has not had a player like him since he left.

And after this third goal, I'm suspecting that  Princip's Sandwich didn't actually go back to bed after my rude outburst.

2014-04-06 09:52:55 AM
I hope Everton manages to keep Martinez. It'd be nice to have a new challenger for the top spots.

2014-04-06 09:53:01 AM
Should be an Arteta OG.

Martinez and Rodgers are going to do some work in the league next season.

Mr_H: The Portland-Seattle game was a lot of fun to watch.

I gave that game the full 90 and was in knots when the Timbers had a 4-2 lead due to poor decisions by the defenders.  When Negal came on, Sounders pressed and got the tie in thrilling fashion.  It was one of the best games from both I have seen.

RAMSEY back, that was a long 6 weeks

Makelele for Real. They've had suspect defending ever since he left.

Sachbash: RAMSEY back

Out since Boxing Day with a thigh injury?  Missing 14 matches?  Ouch, that's a long stretch.

2014-04-06 09:58:20 AM
Isn't that Yaya Sanogo readying up? I think Wenger's giving up on this match and is using it as match fitness.

ADubs86: Martinez and Rodgers are going to do some work in the league next season.

I was very surprised when Liverpool passed on Martinez for Rodgers a few years ago (especially since Whelan was backing him), and I even thought it may have been a mistake.  But it's obviously worked out so far for Liverpool.  And for Everton, so far so good.

Yeah that game was great.  I watched the first half of Toronto/Columbus which was good, DC/NE was actually good, and some of Philly/Chicago was good.  The disappointing game, surprisingly, was RSL/KC the rematch of the MLS Cup final.  Really chippy and not a lot of clear cut chances.  Thank geebus for MLS Live.

2014-04-06 10:01:53 AM
One small bright spot from this game: despite the scoreline, Szczesny has been quite good. He's made half a dozen good saves and no mistakes I've seen in positioning or timing.

Imagine, more CL teams in Merseyside than in London. It really could happen now.

I've been tempted to get that, it worth it?  Are the games live or can you watch'em whenever?

71-29 possession in Everton's favor in the past 10 minutes. Arsenal's getting thumped.

2014-04-06 10:04:50 AM
Wow. Even if it came after he was called offside, that shot was Gervinho-worthy.

I initially thought it was a mistake, too. But no one can argue that it hasn't worked out for everyone.

I think it's totally worth it. You can watch the matches live or whenever you want.  The quality is incredible, you can watch multiple matches at a time if you want, and you can get the games on your phone with their app which works great.  I'm a big DC fan who no longer lives in the area so I got it to watch their matches, but I watch so many more games now that I can watch them anywhere.  It's a great deal too as when you resubscribe you get 20% off each year so I got the entire season for like $50 or $55 bucks.

2014-04-06 10:13:51 AM
Ok, 'scuse me, I need to fall into a Meat Coma.

2014-04-06 10:14:23 AM
Crossbar is Martinez's hottest new signing.

2014-04-06 10:14:59 AM
Like Tim Howard needs Crossbar to actually help him

Pretty much what i was thinking, with maybe Tony Adams.

Arsenal can be kicked off the ball easily (not that Everton are doing this, they are just outplaying them) and one thing you couldn't do is kick Viera off the ball, plus he would sort out players on his own team who thought they could coast through a game. His battles with Roy Keane were great to watch.

For Norwich its much harder as we havn't realy had a golden era until the last few years. I would say Grant Holt as he is a much better player than most people think and is very good at setting up other strikers.

I wonder how close we are to the EPL disintermediating broadcasting by moving to operate in a similar way to MLB?

This is what I expected unfortunately. This year has been the same old arsenal story: play well long enough to get hopes up, then get decimated with injuries and not have the depth the manage them.

My only hope for CL qualification is based on Everton still has two Manchester games this year while Arsenal's are mostly bottom of the table teams.
