Again? Don't they do this every few years? A few billion here, a few billion there...pretty soon you're talking about real money.

The folks at State are taking lessons from the DOD?

Seriously. F*cking pikers. The DOD could lose that much in a day.

Did they check under the couch cushions?  You'd be amazed at how much money can wind up there.

See!?  That's how they couldn't pay for the security for Benghazi!  The Republicans are blameless, Fartbongo lied, and diplomats died!

Benghazi.

State, particularly IT at State, is controlled by contractors. It needs to stop.

In the private sector that gets you fired, no?

2014-04-04 08:45:02 PM
Headline The article is actually about the DOD losing money.. and the state department uncovering it.

2014-04-04 08:51:20 PM
So when the Senate took the filibuster away from the obstructionist Republicans, office vacancies were finally filled last year, along with the Inspector General post? And when the IG did his job he was able to do a full accounting of all the money?

Huh, amazing.

But this is the FT, and it's Taft's fault of course.

2014-04-04 08:52:26 PM
Onoes, some paperwork didn't get filed correctly. Time to fire up the outrage machine.

They didn't flush the money down the toilet, they just lost the receipts.

Remember when we used to regulars lose actual pallets of cash in the areas of Baghdad and Tikrit?

Of course you don't, but trust me: those were good times, my friend. A real American Christian was in charge.

I didn't read the article or anything but $6B is twice Canada's full budget for our equivalent to what the State Department Does (DFAIT)

That's cray cray.

Here's the link to prove it.

Looks more like services were rendered but not accounted for properly?

As a miserable excuse for a fleet management (and soon to be miserable excuse for inventory management) i know how those errors can crop up. Also looks like this was since they last had an inspector.

Umm, one decision made by DoD in haste about a contract design can cost Trillions. They make this type of mistake regularly.

More likely the CBO.  Had it been the DOD there would have been at least one more zero in there.

The entire DoD budget is well under a trillion, so that would have to be quite an error.

But seriously, RTFA sometimes. This money has bee missing for years, since Bush shipped pallets of cash to Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, actual pallets of cash money.

$12 Billion total.

They were able to account for half and the other half has been missing since.

I was more thinking the convenient timing to attack Hillco.

But...who was responsible for blocking the IG position for 5 years?

Was it one of those "I'm gonna leave this pallet with a billion dollars in hundred dollar bills right here and go get some coffee.  If it's gone by the time I get back, I can't be held responsible, such is life" Iraq kind of situations.

The population of Canada is 1/10th that of the US. That makes it easy because anytime you want to compare something Canadian to something in the States, move the decimal place over one spot. Canada is on the metric system so it should be that much easier to do. It's still a lot of money but you need to adjust for population before going into OMG mode.

It was all a plot to make valuable American money prolific in the region and a secondary currency that buys luxuries when loaves of the local stuff can't. Six billion just tossed around to buy good will.

So does that mean I get to "lose" a big portion of my taxes due to neglect??

When are people going to JAIL???

I go to jail if I do that.
Or I pay big penalty and interest.

When are we going to start holding our tax money accountable???

DOD can't even audit itself...at all.

Those CEOs got bonuses because they convinced the government to bail them out, so it was like they never really lost the money and on top of that made money from that transaction and further consolidated the power of the biggest banks. Losing that much money on bad deals should be fireable, but it's not the same as losing track of that much money.

Don't forget they have a large number of guns, ammo and for some reason a shiatload of waterproof coffins.  You don't think they might have something nefarious in mind do you?  Of course with your profession that puts you in a tight spot doesn't it?
