This is not an accomplishment.  It's well recognized and used for the same reason that Internet Explorer is well used, it's the default, and it's not easy for the average user to figure out how to change it.  at least it wasn't easy back then.

Basically, the ringtone being recognizeable in this case is like winning the special olympics of ringtones.

My ringtone has been Protricity's Mine Cart Misadventure since as long as I could put an MP3 (and eventually .flac) on my phone.
I would posit that it is the best song for a ringtone, and it's no surprise you haven't heard of it.

I don't see where the joke is in that.  I suppose it is a type of humour that some people practice, just being an asshole in public with no actual punchline, but it wasn't the style of that particular show.

No, it is a pretty catchy and recognizable ringtone. AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile all have their ringtones set to default, and they are unmemorable crap compared to the iconic Nokia tune.

Yup. And the only tone of ringing I want to hear is the sound of a brass hammer repeatedly striking two brass bells of slightly different pitch. It's a musical tune of two notes rapidly repeating. That is the sound most recognized by the world as a ringing telephone. Unfortunately mobile phones can't fit bells and a hammer, so if they have to fake it with a synthesizer then so be it.

Depends on where you are; if you're American, you're talking about Western Bell ringer which was installed in every phone from the 1920s to the 1970s.  But if you're European, you're thinking of a completely different sound, likely made by an Erickson phone, but not necessarily; the English and Swiss have their own phones which had their own bell tones.

Bonkers, no, I just laugh at them. I'll tolerate whatever other people have to have, I don't have any control over what they do. But I have the option of having my cell phone sound like an actual telephone, so why shouldn't I take advantage of that?

I just don't get it. It's the "I don't even own a TV" attitude. You're carrying a marvel of technology while loudly exclaiming you're a luddite about the sound it makes. You would seriously rather hear a shrill annoying bell than ANY more pleasant notification of your choice? I have seen people put a phone ring sample on their phones for irony and amusement, but never because it's the sound they prefer over all other sounds.
