(FactCheck)   John Boehner's health insurance premium really is doubling under Obamacare...because Republicans passed a law kicking members of Congress out of the very affordable Federal Employees Health Benefits Program   (factcheck.org) divider line 87

Covered in TFA; DC is one of the few parts of the US where insurance companies can't factor in your tobacco use. It's more because he's an old fart -- and because the Congressional insurance package he got booted from used to be even sweeter than the usual public sector grade that unions negotiate.

Exactly. You can't go making outrageous promises about how we're going to be able to finally just kill all the old republican shiat wizards and then not deliver. It's just cruel. I was super excited for a bit there.

Americans have short memories.  Bloody gold fish.

Check out this clip from 2010 and contrast that with upwards of ~9.5M Americans now have insurance that didn't have it before.

Maybe they'll think about the consequences when they pass laws that actually directly affect them? Probably not.

But that's a costly switch for Boehner, who is 64 years old.

My heart truly bleeds for a man who got exactly what he wanted.
But hey, at least next year he can save some money by switching to Medicare.

Assuming his party doesn't succeed in its plan to switch it to vouchers, in which case it'll probably be Obama's fault again.

2014-04-04 02:14:25 PM
What's more last year he was screaming from the rooftops about how unfair it was that him and his staffers were going to receive that $426 subsidy from their employer (the government). So had they been able to remove that provision he'd be paying triple the premium now.

Man, talk about unfair, we were hoping more congressmen would quit due to this!

Shame. I'd love to hear Congress biatching about the costs of their group plan - Congress being comprised of 535 of the oldest motherfarkers in the country, that's not a cohort known for its good health.

// though I guess the average Senator reaches Medicare-eligibility during their first term

They had a single policy, but she apparently became Medicare eligible this year, so he is adding his premium for a single policy to her Medicare

"To sum up, Boehner is paying $433 a month now. His new plan will cost $449 a month plus up to $400 a month for his wife's Medicare plan, for a total of $849 - nearly twice his current premium of $433. "

So he's going from a $700 deductible to a $1,000 deductible? How is that triple?

Congress never got free health care.  They got and paid for the same coverage federal employees got.

Disallowing Congress from using their employer-sponsored health care was a pandering move to try and defeat the argument that if it's so good, why aren't you on it?  An argument, of course, that could've applied to any employee whose job offered private health insurance.

Semantic Warrior: So he's going from a $700 deductible to a $1,000 deductible? How is that triple?

I'm assuming he's dividing the $700 deductible by 2 since now there is only one person on the plan. Granted, deductibles are almost per enrollee not per plan as far as I know, but that's likely the logic when we're treating a group plan for two people as apples to apples with buying two single individual plans cost-wise (they usually aren't.)

Either that or he's adding his wife's Medicare deductibles to his personal deductible. Either way it reflects ignorance of how insurance works.
