Aren't late night shows usually comedy shows?  Who would get a woman to host a comedy show?

2014-04-04 10:27:46 AM
Chelsea Handler is a remorseless talentless hack whose sole purpose seems to be murdering perfectly crafted comedy material, writing vapid books and showing up at appearances half in the bag and writing it off as edgy and what she needs to do to cope with everything that was handed to her in this world.

Right, because the Joan Rivers Show turned out so well.

/oh wait, you said woman, not harpy

I agree, it time for a dwarf Chineese immigrant to host a late night show because there has never been one. Petition time.

That woman makes me almost physically ill. Her program IS that bad!

I'm still waiting to see her sex tape.

We know it exists. It's out there somewhere. Yet, I don't believe it's on the internet.

The main one being, Sumner Redstone won't sleep with her.

Women can be funny.  Tina Fey would be a potentially great host.  Chelsea Handler though?  Yeah, she's the female Jay Leno:  devoid of any real talent.

2014-04-04 10:46:31 AM
Wut? Chelsea Handler isn't a woman? I thought the approved Internet Joke about Ms. Handler is that she only got a show because she slept with executives? I don't really agree with that, as I've enjoyed the parts of her books that I've read here and there, and I think she's overall a funny person that has a good rapport with her guests. And the short lived, faux-reality "After Lately" was hilarious. Regardless, she really wouldn't work in network TV.

I also think she's pretty hot, but what do I know.

I think Paula Poundstone would be great at it. Most of her act is improvised interaction with audience members. It seems like that would easily translate into being a good interviewer.

Here's a thought: How about just ending the show when Letterman retires?

This. Saying it's time to pick specifically a woman is demeaning to women. It says "we know you can't compete if we base this decision on merit/skill/ability/talent/competence, so here's a freebie. Now run along and play with your little cameras, cutie."

It's so sad to see feminism coming to this. After decades of proclaiming how wrong it is to make judgments based solely on sex (and obviously being right about that), it's all being boiled down to gangs of the angry and entitled using pressure tactics to demand that our society make judgments based solely on sex.

I'd sign on to this only if each episode was drawn a la Home Movies, and Coach McGuirk was her wacky sidekick.

Not funny.

The only female comedian who can make me laugh on a relative regular basis is Ellen.

Unfortunately, if a woman is picked, no matter the circumstances, this will be the thought.

It's so sad to see feminism coming to this. After decades of proclaiming how wrong it is to make judgments based solely on sex (and obviously being right about that), it's all being boiled down to gangs of the angry and entitled using pressure tactics to demand that our society make judgments based solely on sex.

That's not what modern feminism is. Saying "You know, all the network late night hosts have been men, and it's assumed a man will take over next, why not give serious thought to women candidates?" doesn't mean, "YOU HAVE TO PICK A WOMAN!".

I'll cede that the author of this piece is veering close to the latter. "In fact, "opportunity" is not the right word; "necessity" is more like it" is extraordinarily close to tokenism, and I don't agree with it. In fact, I doubt any of my feminists friends would agree with that. But using one article by one author to represent "feminism" is foolhardy.

David Letterman never made me laugh. And before he was on The Daily Show, Jon Stewart was awful in every role he was in.

Contribute some names of women you'd like to see as hosts of an interview show, then. (Ellen excepted, she already has a successful show.)

The only female clever enough to do a late night show would be Tina Fey.

I'm not saying she's barely capable--I'm saying she's so much better than the next female it's not even close.

/Seriously, she's funnier than 97% of the guys, who are generally better than the rest of the chicks.

Tina Fey would be good, but I think she has some kind of deal in place with NBC. I don't them letting her out of that to compete with Fallon.

He's on BBCA.  My TiVo catches every episode.  The great thing about his show is, except in cases of tight scheduling, all of the guests are out at once.

Back to Ferguson for a second... the reason he's great and nowadays Conan rather sucks is most of the time Conan is just reading from the blue cards and waiting for the opportunity to mug for the camera.  Ferguson throws the cards away and just flirts with the guest.  I'm sure agents hate him because the guest doesn't remember to plug the project half the time.

I record Norton and Feguson to watch the show.  I record Letterman and O'Brien just to see if the band is any good.

Yeah, because you were just as efficient and experienced at your first "big boy" job as you are now.

She was good on SNL Update, wrote a good movie in Mean Girls, and was brilliant developing & shepherding 30 Rock.

SNL is at best 10% funny, no matter what year is chosen*.

*Except for Eddie Murphy, who was a freak of nature back in the day.

Ever wonder how 30 Rock got SEVEN FARKING YEARS despite the fact no one watched it?  Lorne Michaels.  Lorne Michaels also hand-picked Fallon.  There is no possible way Tina Fey would go against Fallon after everything Lorne Michaels did for her.

Make it a late night female panel show with snookie, Miley, Margaret cho, that broad from the nanny, Ellen's crazy ex-gay ex-girlfriend, whoopi, and that wacky ex congresswoman from Georgia.

Make the topics increasingly more and more complex... Tonight we discuss the geopolitical and economic effects of the move from an agrarian society in Papua New Guinea and the effects of culture and geography on their ability to exploit their own indigenous resources

Would look like 5 monkeys trying to hump a doorknob

I really think Amy Schumer is funny but she may be a little too raunchy for the mainstream.
