I went on vacation to England one time. We stayed at a nice hotel in a suburb of London called Kensington. The wife and I decided to go for a walk through the neighborhood. As we went, we began to notice more and more fancy cars lining the streets. Then we stumbled upon a big party at a Ferrari dealership. The people going in were not wearing a much nicer style of clothes than we, although I'm sure theirs were more expensive. However I was confident that if we walked in as if we should be there, that we wouldn't be kicked out. They weren't guarding the doors or anything. Sadly, my wife chickened out, so we only admired the fine automobiles as we walked by.

I used to live right around the corner from that dealership when I was in university. They had a gorgeous '67 275 GTB/4 for a while, for (I recall) about $40k or so. Dad didn't buy it for me, though I begged.

/that is not, naturally, anything close to 2014 dollars
//saw Sir Mick driving a Ferrari past that dealer once as well
///there are probably still stains on that dealership floor from my puddles of drool

Depends on the 911. I would let in an early one because the 911 is iconic, along with the first turbo as at the time it had Ferrari beating power.

A bog standard Carrera from the 80's onwards should be left at home.

I saw an M3! Which means I can bring my M5.
Joining criteria according the website: BMW: M's considered.
Although it says "Minimum joining criteria: Base 911/Exige"
I don't know what that means.

I just don't understand how that's a criteria for entry. If it were like hp per lb, or price must exceed that of an Exige or 911, I'd get it. "Is your car better than a base 911?" Seems rather subjective to me. They say "Porsche: Any model" but that sounds like it excludes Boxsters and Caymans (Caymen?)

I know people who speak English as a second language have trouble with this, so out of charity, I'll help you understand.  In the phrase "an awesome supercar meetup", 'awesome' and 'supercar' are adjectives, describing the meetup.   The singlular pronoun 'an' is appropriate--there's only one meetup in the article.    You should finish learning to speak and read English before you criticize others correct usage.

Where did you see that? Honest question: I RTFA and didn't see that anywhere (though I didn't watch the videos).

I think it would be odd for them to say "any Porsche" - they wouldn't want tatty 924s and 944s showing up to a supercar gathering.

2014-04-04 01:37:58 PM
I'm sure that if you had dropped a bomb on that gathering, you would have wiped out a few percentage points of the world's asshole population.

It's kind of strange that any AMG Merc will get you in, but M BMW's are considered. They're certainly rarer, but you can get a beater AMG C43 for like $10k.

Ah - thanks!

Bentley and Maserati are "Any model" as well? Hmm. It's possible (even likely) that their definition of 'supercar' differs somewhat from my own.  As with your example, it sounds like someone could turn up in a 1980s Maserati BiTurbo and be admitted.

They will allow ANY Porsche, Cayman, Boxter, etc. I have a '93 RX-7 that would go toe-to-toe with them and many other 'allowed' cars but calling any of them "Supercars" is a stretch. IMO, Supercars should be capable of 200mph+ which would whittle that list down considerably.

I'd knock that down a few mph. There are plenty of cars that can't do 200mph that are pretty super.

Actually, you are probably correct, since the long URL for this comments thread does include the additional words, so I probably just saw it wrong in the first place.  It was not a failure in my understanding of the rules of English syntax.  Your nasty tone was not, however, necessary.

Sofa King Smart: one of those pics contains a mid-sixties mustang...  super car?

Not sure if trolling, but...the first-gen Mustangs (they hit dealers in April 1964 and that bodystyle continued roughly through 1968, but the true first gen ran through '73, though you'd never confuse a '66 with a '71, for example)...anyway as far as first-gen Mustangs go, you had 6-cylinder "secretary cars" as they were originally marketed, you had Carroll Shelby's worldbeating track cars in the GT350 and GT 500 packages, and you had performance options that trickled down from various road racing bodies, NASCAR, and the NHRA like the 428 Cobra Jet engine package, the various BOSS stuff, etc.

So a "first-gen Mustang" can today cost you $5,000 for a driveable early coupe, or you can literally spend over half a million dollars on a concourse Boss 429. It's entirely likely that a first-gen Mustang gets to play at the supercar party.

And another thing...we've had 50 years to fark with Mustangs, and it's easy to do. Google something like "mustang restomod" to see first-gen cars with full IFS, modern drivetrains, etc...they can be easily made to perform at supercar levels.

That being said, I saw two early Mustangs in those pics, the red one that was obviously heavily modified (mini-tubbed in the back for those wide tires, for example) which was probably admitted juse because it was big, loud, brash, and classicly musclecar-ish, but it doesn't appear to be anything special on its own, and if you look all the way to the right, back near the plane, there's a stock-appearing '67 (I think) that I can't find details of, which very well may be a Shelby Mustang...but I can't be sure.

If you had an 80s bi-turbo and it was still running you would have the $$$ spent on the car requirement covered. I had an 84 and it was an amazingly engineered hunk of shiat. Though I thought it felt about as fast as my fox mustang gt.

bluenovaman: fox mustang gt

AKA my first car, an '83 GT with the rare-ish 4-speed that had a couple years' worth of engine and suspension work done before I got to it...it was a goddamn vicious animal...an animal which I killed in a head-on crash about 9 months after getting it on the road.

/some redneck owed us a favor and said he'd fix it, brought it back with (I think) an '84 4-cyl front clip, the side trim was like 2 inches off, it looked like hell so I let it go
//some other redneck still drives it in Bumfark, Maryland, still with the wrong front end, and he's mini-tubbed it too...an unfortunate end for a really badass ride
///CSB: had a custom interior too, red cloth with grey inserts...the first ever bodies in that backseat was my 2nd-ever BJ...good times...except the red cloth left an insane amount of red fuzz on everything that touched it, so when I went to shower later and saw my ass and legs all bright red and oddly textured, being a 16-year-old idiot, I momentarily thought I'd broken out with a vicious STD from that backseat blowie, and my stomach hit the floor with an almost audible thud.
