She's attractive. I'd give her my shaft.

Submitted this with a better headline AND spelled Gretzky right.  Fark.

That being said, the LPGA does have a point.  Why not put Natalie Gulbis or, better yet since she's actually won a lot of tournaments, Paula Creamer on the cover?  This is the equivalent--or would have been back in the day--of putting Elin Nordegren there.  Much like her mother, Paulina Gretzky has decided that if she can't have a career, she'll be a WAG.

I'm 100pct certain I could go through back issues if Golf Digest and find covers featuring male celebrities.

I've slacked off in my role as Paula's official stalker. Need to get back to that.

"I think they should maybe recognize some of the great women golfers that we have. It's like, What do you have to do to get a little respect? I'm guaranteeing you right now, it was not a woman editor who chose that cover."

People seem to think that magazines just exist on their own.  If Juli Inkster wants a magazine to promote women's golf, she should consider taking some steps towards developing a magazine devoted to recognizing women golfers.

I like this pick.

From the ESPN article:

"That's just been the way it is for over 20, 30 years," Park said. "We are trying to get closer to the guys, but obviously we are never going to get there. That's for sure. The LPGA is getting better and better."

I would certainly put my balls in her holes.  They are just trying to sell issues, perhaps they are down due to Tiger's lack of success. Who would buy a magazine with a lesbian golfer on the cover dressed like that?  That is like putting a WNBA player on an NBA magazine.  I am willing to bet it would turn away many men from purchasing the magazine.

What is the ratio of male to female golfers?

Maybe they are attempting reach a new demographic.  Perhaps young females and also the men who were otherwise on the fence about buying the same regurgitated monthly magazine.  Maybe they are trying to imply that golf isn't just for the lesbian or old woman, or at least females that look as such.

To sum it up...
Hi, I'm Paulina Gretzky, I like golf and men find me to be really pretty.  So please like me and like golf!!!  You should listen to me because my dad was one of the best hockey players of all time, so I must be genetically superior.  Look inside and find out what it looks like inside me.

Look at all the attention it has received already.  So it's working, congratulations!

First Take is on now and they are discussing this topic.  Apparently 81% of subscribers are males.  How many males and females will buy this magazine off the rack this month because of hers?  I hate to say it, but Stephen A Smith has the same perspective as me.

Exactly, they're trying to sell magazines at Hudson News stands in airports.

Secretly however they are all finger blasting themselves to the pictures.

If they wanted an old lesbian, they should have gone with Wayne Gretzky.

Then you need to dramatically re-evaluate your perspective, because that's a very strong indicator that your perspective is wrong.

It's tough to say because often his "take" is the opposite of Skip Bayless, so the only real correct perspective is not to have one.

/look, they can't always have pro golfers on the cover. That's dumb.

I agree with Julie. If you're going to put a woman on the cover of your golf magazine you could at least use a woman who plays the game at the professional level. The LPGA doesn't get any respect as it is, things like this don't help the cause any.

Since when is a private publication responsible for making sure any particular organization gets respect?  If the LPGA wants some respect, they should go about earning it by finding a way to be a product anybody on the planet cares about.

They don't but here's a little news for you. Golf is on the decline in a big way right now. Roughly 25% of the golfers are women. If Golf Digest wants to keep marketing to old guys who are as likely to look at the Viagra ads as longingly as they do the cover they are certainly free to do so. I'm sure their subscription rates and single issue sales will continue to decline right along with the popularity of golf in general. Or they could be a little proactive about things and try and get the other 50% of the population a little more involved in the sport.

They arent, but jesus did you read Golf Digest's defense:

"Paulina ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game."

Yes. very compelling, she overcame the staggering wealth of her family to maintain an attractive figure and land a golfer boyfriend. So brave.

I'm not saying it's a great choice for Golf Digest, but I am saying that complaints from Juli Inkster and her ilk are based in the mistaken belief that the LPGA and its members are owed anything by the publication.

This is absolutely true. I'm a golfer, I subscribe to Golf Digest (and Golf Magazine), and there's an issue from a few months ago that I want to frame, and bust it out the next time someone asks "why is golf in decline?"

At first, when you look at it, there's nothing unusual about it. Some instructions, some stories about PGA guys, bunch of ads. But there are a couple of little things that flat-out SCREAM why golf isn't growing. The first one is the story on women in golf. It said nothing about their play. Rather, it was 10 of the "hottest women in golf", posing in swimwear. Way to alienate half the population.

The second was a story on golf in Juarez, and the cartels. Good read, until the magazine felt compelled to mention that someone named Treviño was not related to someone named Trevino. For those of you who don't speak Spanish, ñ is not just an n with a tilde. It's a different letter. I don't get the feeling the editors would have done this if they were talking about two guys from the Midwest named Adkins and Atkins.

Golf's getting old, and staying white, and staying male. And they can't understand why the game won't grow.

WTF?  The first two words of my comment agree with you but you conveniently snipped out your part of the comments.  I  just went on to elaborate on why it was a bad move on Golf Digest.  Here's a lovely parting gift for you to help with all the imaginary butthurt.

The Muthaship:

Like Michael Phelps or Justin Timberlake.

Justin Timberlake is extremely involved in golf. Every hear of the Shriners Tournament? Yeah, he hosted that. And he continues to work with the PGA to grow the game and build charity revenue. He's also a pretty solid player. I believe he plays to about a 7 handicap.

Michael Phelps, while not a great golfer (average at best), was at least a guest on the Hank Haney Project. I certainly wouldn't rank him anywhere near the level of Timberlake for involvement, but he brought some attention to the sport from other areas, and is actually quite a good ambassador for the game.

Paulina Gretzky has a whorish Instagram/Twitter account and is screwing Dustin Johnson. And if she wasn't, there wouldn't be any connection to the game at all. And I feel the same way about shoving Kate Upton on the cover of that magazine.

So why is she on the cover? Because Golf Digest is the Maxim/Cosmo magazine of the sport. Sell issues, provide little useful content, rinse, repeat.

Oh and for those interested, Holly Sonders will be giving her opinion on all of this on The Golf Channel today. She was on the cover a few months back, is better looking than Gretzky, and actually plays the game at a high level. She is also a model. So it could be an interesting take on this.
