Something says to me that like the threads of empowering the women brings to we the Fark sexists so will the story of this provide to we the Fark audists. Perhaps you should not wish for changing those with Deafness (I have done the capitalization of this as the movement).

At least that's what they told her.

I was born deaf due to Usher syndrome, so hearing birdsong and running water at the age of 40 was beyond words

I'm grateful to her for letting us share in her moment of joy. She's gained more control over how she wants to interact with the world and that's a wonderful feeling, much like when I moved from crappy to good hearing aids as a kid.

Good luck to her, and perhaps someday we can do something about the vision.

No snark here, can't help but smile at this. I envy her all the music she will hear for the first time. The hell with anyone who is against cochlear implants.

Just youtube "hearing for the first time" or some variant.....  From adults to teenagers to young kids, it is simply amazing to see their reactions at hearing a family member's voice for the first time (or a child hearing their own voice)...lotsa dust for sure.

/and fark the deaf activists that are against cochlear implants

I'd love to see the response to this from that busybody whose article was posted here about a week ago about how these videos are bad and that we should feel bad for watching them. This woman choose to share this incredible moment of her life with the world, and in so doing, she has helped raise awareness of her affliction and, I would argue, has helped those of us with functional hearing to better appreciate something we take for granted.

There's a whole subset of the deaf community that considers cochlear implants (or really anything that restores hearing) evil....they say deaf people don't need to be "fixed"....

The complaints against those who chose to get the implant are ridiculous.  I say, turn a deaf ear to them.

The militant deaf community is really annoying. I sort of get why some adult might choose not to get cochlear implants, because it would be a major life upheaval and a lifelong change. But the way these guys politicize a completely personal decision is reprehensible.

My father worked at a school for the deaf when I was growing up. Hate to say it, but those students as a whole were the biggest group of farking assholes I had ever met. I eventually gave up trying to be friendly when I stopped by to visit, and just avoided them entirely.

I'm very curious. How did this lady who never heard any sounds before know what the technician was saying? For that matter, when deaf people read is there a "mind voice" that reads out in their head at all or do they just recognize the word shapes?

If you think they're bad, you should see the militant Anencephalists* (with a capital A).

Yep, this is 100% true.  Knew an almost deaf guy with some special hearing aid (not cochlear).   He said a percentage of his deaf acquaintances would give him crap for *that*
