It took over 70 years to find the wreck of the Titanic. It's possible that our grandkids will still be looking for Flight 370.

More and more people are beginning to believe that the plane might have landed on the Diego Garcia island atoll US base that just happens to be in the area of the disappearance.  In any event, our military and intel community obviously know way more than they are letting on.

/was there a good reason for this to happen?

Yes, we will never understand why the magic flying box fell from the sky.

They have fu*ked this up from the beginning. They are trying to save face which makes them look even more incompetent than what they are trying not to be. Is there a way for some country that knows how to handle things like an international airline/airport to take charge over these idiots so that this doesn't happen again?

If it was deliberate, it doesn't really matter where it is.

If it was accidental, there are a lot of people who want to know what happened so they can prevent it from happening again.

Either way, there are a lot of friends and families out there who want some closure.

But... Agreed that sure as hell doesn't belong on CNNs 24 hour news rotation. Three weeks of breaking news stories to report that nobody knows anything and nothing has changed is beyond stupid.

The plane flew for 8 hours. That's pretty much all we know. And all that tells us is the plane could be godammed anywhere.

For this to be true, the Inmarsat data would have to be completely unreliable since Diego Garcia is nowhere close to either of the arcs suggested by the last ping.

gweilo8888: ..., if not our own kids -- just like most of us have forgotten about the overwhelming majority of these, many of which happened during our own adult lifetimes:

The Titanic disaster was not remembered for being a wrecked boat, it was remembered for its size and the number of people onboard. Since then, there have been thousands of disappearances of fishing boats, the vast majority of which didn't even merit recognition on the back page of their local newspaper.

While few would remember even one of the missing planes from your list, they are fishing boats in comparison to flight 370. You may as well be writing your comment from 1912 saying "kids today don't care about that time my grandpappy got drunk and fell off his boat, so come this time next year the Titanic will be a distant and fading memory."

2014-04-02 10:39:06 PM
Something occurred to me today.  How long do they actually keep looking for this plane?  Right now, it sounds like a crapload of money is being spent sending ships, and planes, and experts and whatever out in a big farking ocean to look for a needle in the haystack.  A needle which is probably sitting at the bottom of the ocean in pieces.  Meanwhile, you have these hysterical Chinese families wailing and ready to beat anybody over the head who tells them what we already know, as in, your loved one is dead.

How long does this search on before somebody pulls the plug on this massive effort?

HAVE YOU EVEN WATCHED CNN?

I have to say the data I see coming out doesn't make sense.

*They have the data up until the transponder gets turned off.
*They have the radar data that shows the plane turning west
*They have the satellite data that shows the plan pinging until it's final location

Problems. The western turn shown by radar data does not match with the final destination of the plane. Which leaves this: If the plane had to turn southeast to get to where the last ping came from it would have to pass over Indonesia, which should give more radar data.

The other part of that is, I've yet to see them demonstrate where the satellite pings matched up to the other known positions of the aircraft.

It's not hard to instill a sense of confidence in what you're doing, and all this half data they are putting out doesn't do that.

It just makes me wonder if some of this data they thought they were getting is false, as in the plane never turned to the left, and the radar data is wrong.

The only people who are confused about LOST are the people who "watched it now and then."  If you watched all the episodes in order and remembered what actually happened, everything was made perfectly clear.

The only people who are confused about LOST are the people who "watched it now and then."  If you watched all the episodes in order and remembered what actually happened, everything was made perfectly clear.

Eh, people are only confused about how they wasted so much time on a show that was literally pulling it out of their ass every week in and week out that fell apart when they actually realized the end was nigh and they had to try making it make sense.

Seems like it might be a more efficient use of resources to search potential landing strips at this point. Unless they WANT us to think it is in the ocean.

the ha ha guy: The Titanic disaster was not remembered for being a wrecked boat, it was remembered for its size and the number of people onboard. Since then, there have been thousands of disappearances of fishing boats, the vast majority of which didn't even merit recognition on the back page of their local newspaper.

The Titanic disaster was not remembered by most, full-stop. Ask most people about it in the 1940 or 1950s, and they'd have looked at you blankly -- just as 20-30 years from now, they'll look at you blankly about MH370 even if we never find it.

Titanic came back *into* people's consciousness because of the Kamudas and a couple of movies, and because it spoke to (or at least, could be used to speak to) various social issues that were up for debate in the 50s and 60s. And then layers of romanticism and "what ifs" piled on top of the story -- plus the fact it increasingly became a profit-making enterprise much like the so-called Bermuda Triangle -- have kept it in the public consciousness.

All of that is very unlikely to happen with MH370, just like it hasnt happened with the many ships of similar size and vintage to the Titanic that have been largely forgotten:
