Just an idea - stop buying so much.

colinspooky: Just an idea - stop buying so much.

Are you kidding? They have contracts with the suppliers, you can't suggest they stop giving that money to them. Madness, madness, I say!

15 cents a meal going to waste seems exceptional to me. That is a problem? It seems commendable. Everyone isn't always going to like everything.

naughtyrev: They have contracts with the suppliers

In my experience the contracts were price based not volume based. There were no guarantees on the amounts purchased but there were guarantees on what they will pay.

The problem is not how much they buy or how much they are paying, it's what they have to buy.

School food? The waste happened long before it got to the kids.

That's a lot of uterbraten.

It's socialist to hire people to prepare ingredients into food, you gotta order hungry man meal rejects at a premium.

LA kids just need a little encouragement. Like you find in the US military.

"Sonny, you eat your goddam ham and motherfarkers or I will unscrew your head and shiat down your neck!"

Maybe start composting it and sell the resulting "waste" to landscaping material suppliers?

Last time I visited LA, it seemed like there was a lot more than just food that was going to waste.

Nothing like serving "healthy" foods that the little buggers won't eat.

/I blame Michelle

Feed them MREs. If they are stuck in private school, that may want to get used to them as the military may be their only job hopes they way we are going.

TFA: "We can stop forcing children to take food they don't like and throw in the garbage."

Or -- crazy idea -- you can present them with food they *do* like...

Hair in the food? Nasty meat? Sour fruit?  Come on. Michelle. You can eat that and show them who's boss.

If you don't eat your (canned) meat you can't have any pudding!  How can you can you have any pudding if you don't eat your (rancid) meat?!

Stand still, laddy!

Conservatives, fighting desperately for your tax dollars to subsidize potato wedges, juice and hot cheetos!

It's lunchtime at Washington Preparatory High School in Los Angeles, but 16-year-old Parrish Jackson has barely touched her turkey burger and apricots.
She's dumping them into the trash can.
The apricots are "sour," the junior says. The meat is "nasty." If it were up to her, she would just have taken the potato wedges - they're close enough to fries - then headed to the student store to fuel up on hot Cheetos and juice.

"If the food was good food, we'd have no problems," A'lea said. She dumped her food, then headed off to the school store for a Pop-Tart.

There's your answer right there, stop selling snacks at the school store.

If its like the crap they used to serve us in school I dont blame em. Veggies boiled until the color is gone, gray meet in some kinda brown sauce, crunchy noodles in ketchup. Made me start to bring my own lunch.

One thing that drives me nuts though is my roomate she buys all this fresh food and lets it rot because she isnt in the "mood" to eat it.

The problem is that the kind of food most kids like the most is also the food that will turn them into little lard tubs.
