But at least the New PopeTM is a really, really nice guy, right? That's what we need to focus on here, people. The Catholic Church is now the Best Religion In The World because the New Pope is just that coooool. He dun a Selfie, FFS, how horrifyingly corrupt can any organization, that has a guy like that for a boss, actually be?

I like The Catholic Church, now that it comes with New Pope. Anyone who cries 'spin doctor' needs Inquisiting, imho.

The church does treat them as human, but the media loves a scandal so they elevate them to some ridiculous level of perfection then shine a floodlight on them every time they fall.

If the church treated them as they were human they would still be able to marry.  And people who have never been married, don't have sex or children should not be dispensing advice to the masses on subjects they have actually no experience with.

You really misunderstand religion. Priests are free to give up the priesthood at anytime to marry. They aren't slaves. They have chosen to devote themselves to a non secular life.

Why such blind hatred? And no I'm not catholic. I just don't have unjustified vitriol for someone believing something differently than I do.

How is a person who has been supported by being a priest, for most of their life, "free" to give up the priesthood and marry? How is he going to support himself now? He is just as "free" to end that relationship as an abused woman in a normal christian marriage.

Actually, no.  The doctrine is that priests are chosen (called) by God, not man - theologically, the Church's role in the process of creating a new priest is to ratify a decision that God has already made.  This is why defrocking is something the Catholic Church  really doesn't like to do - it means that either God made a mistake in choosing the priest (which is, of course, completely unthinkable) or that the Catholic Church made a mistake in interpreting God's will for the priest (which is not  completely unthinkable, but it does call the Church's legitimacy into question on their own terms).

The main distinguishing factor in priest scandals is the amount of protection the Catholic Church gives priests against the secular authorities - and to be fair to the Catholic Church, the only reason many Protestant denominations don't do the same is that they can't (they just don't have the power and hierarchy that the Catholic Church does).

He then arrested the priest for drink-driving, refusing to take an alcohol test, possessing drugs, carrying a firearm while intoxicated and not telling the trooper he was carrying the handgun.

So the Fifth Amendment is invalid in Alaska? Good to know.

It's one of those loopholes that states have written in.  In my state when you first get your driver's license you have to sign a form agreeing to submit to a BAC test if you are suspected of driving under the influence.  You are, of course, free to not sign the agreement, but you can't get a license unless you do. I imagine it works the same in the other states as well since the federal government pretty much forced them to adopt the same DUI laws.

Not really, no.  The church teaches God calls everyone to a vocation (those being the priesthood, marriage, religious life, and permanent single life).  There is no belief that if we don't respond correctly it is a horrible disaster (ie. God won't punish someone for the rest of their life for not discerning properly).  A priest is a human who acts in the place of Christ during the sacraments... that's it.  Their hands are blessed, and they are given certain authorities.  Beyond that they are as human as anyone.  The Church doesn't like to defrock priests because forgiveness and mercy is the single most important doctrine of the Church.  You only typically only find priests defrocked when they reject the church, not when they do things wrong.  Laicization doesn't mean they are kicked out of the priesthood.  The church teaches that all vocations, once committed to, are meant to be permanent.  A forced laicization means the priest is still a priest, but forbidden by the church from performing any duties or rites in that role.  When a priest leaves the priesthood to get married (or not), it is taken very seriously because it's a very serious matter of vocation, but not forbidden.  They enter a state of voluntary laicization.  They are still a priest, but no longer active in that role (and are not permitted).  Priesthood is considered an indelible mark on the soul of a person, so they can't be made not a priest any more (just like the Church conisders marriage to be a permanent spiritual state that can't be undone).  A laicized priest can request special dispensation from their vow of celibacy to get married in the Church, but it's pretty uncommon.

Empty H: How is a person who has been supported by being a priest, for most of their life, "free" to give up the priesthood and marry? How is he going to support himself now? He is just as "free" to end that relationship as an abused woman in a normal christian marriage.

Diocesan priests are paid and have personal property.  If he's smart throughout his service a priest can build up wealth just like anyone else.  A religious priest is a little different, but my experience with religious orders is the guys who leave might generate a bit of controversy, but are still helped out by their brothers.

Truther: Priests are human too, subject to the same temptations we are.

And when they give in to these temptations, they deserve to be stripped of their position to tell everyone else how they should be living (from their employer's perspective)

If my banker were to say, give into human temptation and launder money/commit financial fraud, one would logically assume that they would be stripped of their right to be a banker. This is the case in the real working world.

If a Catholic Priest were to give in to human temptation by say, stoned and armed drunk driving/raping a child, one would logically assume that they would be stripped of their right to be a Catholic Priest. This is not the case in the real working world.

Tell me again why I should give this Preist, or The Catholic Church a break? Because Jesus would? Because we're all the same, and humans are weak? You know what's WEAK? Your farking argument.

Shaddap, yourself, kid.
