Go Fast Turn Left: So can someone in Canada tell me: Has he actually done a decent job with doing mayor things? Like with budgets and city management and stuff?  All I hear is that he's basically a Canadian Kennedy, but without all the charm or whatever, but nothing about how the city's actually being run.

He is an 'on message savant'.  He claims to be a fiscal conservative, and tossed out the Scarborough LRT (fully funded by other levels of government, and a more extensive network) for "Subways, Subways, Subways"  a three stop extension to the existing line that will cost Torontonians an extra billion dollars over the LRT plan and reach fewer people.
Many of his "savings" have been by raiding reserve funds and switching or increasing user fees.  Other "savings" are being realized by leaving city staff positions unfilled.  The understaffed departments get grief for underperforming, but no staff to fix the problems.
I could go on, there are dozens more things he's bullshiated his way through this term... but wall of text and all that.

The thing about the tragically stupid is if you shame them, they double down on their position. Profoundly stupid humans are like honey badgers, they'd rather cut off a limb intentionally than listen to your smarmy opinion not to juggle chainsaws.

daisygrrl: If it makes you feel any better, most of Canada has always thought of Torontonians as a horde of abject morons.

They were wrong until recently.

Bennie Crabtree: Wow, the right wing bias of RYOT comes into play when it makes the Chow ads look somehow comparable in content to the Ford ads. That's the sort of lying - making all candidates look like similar targets - that got Ford elected in the first place.

I just thought it was about what's funny, and I would have included those also.  You see bias there?  Lighten up, Francis.

Thanks for that. I realize that "Rob Ford is a bad person" is a great way to go about doing things, but it just seems like they're setting themselves up for possible failure by only attacking his personal life and not really discussing the issues of him doing mayor-type-things.  Face it, lots of crappy people have led cities, states and countries through prosperous times. I don't really care how much crack my mayor has smoked, if my city's doing well and everything, then it's all good.  Puff away, scratchy man.

There is a core group of about 25-30% of Toronto, "Ford Nation", that have that exact attitude, or at least seem to. They are largely a group that feel disenfranchised by "the System" and see the anti-System Ford as their savior.  Meanwhile he's increasing user fees, and gutting budgets for subsidized housing, and school meal programs...  But he'll answer your call, get your problem dealt with (Toronto has a 311 number for that, but he asks everyone to call him personally.)

TheGogmagog: The crux is as a mayor he's done a decent job, and they could do worse politically, Eh?

Except he hasn't. Even a little.
