Only an 8.0 this time? They're slipping.

Huh.  They were right to be concerned.

Last week's news:

Unusual large number of tremors stirs fear in northern Chile

Off the coast. shiat.

No tsunami no tsunami no tsunami!

Just kidsploosh!

This wont be good. Hopefully I'm wrong. There aren't any nuclear reactors that are near retirement there that are to be cooled by seawater in emergency are there?

2014-04-01 08:32:27 PM
no tsunami warning, only that they are monitoring the area

2014-04-01 08:33:04 PM
That whole part of Chile is desert, and the coast is basically one big cliff except for a few small towns and villages. Probably not much gonna happen there.

Hawaii should keep an eye out though.

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center:

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER AND COULD ALSO BE A THREAT TO MORE DISTANT COASTS. AUTHORITIES SHOULD TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL DATA TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE THREAT.

Chili is never good if you make it too watery.

DO THEY HAVE TO WRITE EVERYTHING LIKE THIS? I GUESS WHEN YOU WRITE EVERYTHING IN ALL CAPS PEOPLE TEND TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO IT, SO I GUESS I ANSWERED MY OWN QUESTION.

There will be a tsunami of some size, large or small.  They are expected to hit Hawai'i at 3:24am local Hawaii time.

Actually, I think it is because old technology used only caps.  There is an on-going debate about whether or not to switch to mixed-case system and add punctuation... like commas.

I hope Costa Rica will be OK. I spend most of my vacations trying to drink all their beer on their west coast. Those are good people down there. It's also flat for miles in from their coast and their infrastructure in many of those areas is more of a suggestion.

Yeah, there's been an awful lot of activity lately. I've been wondering if anything larger was going to happen.

Living in the Ring of Fire is beautiful and all but I'm feeling like it's time to head east.
EQ's, mudslides, rumbling volcanoes and such.

I hope so (the six inch waves part)

The big Japan and Indonesia tsunamis were cause by 9.0 earthquakes - considerably stronger than this one.  But of course there are other factors (such as the depth of the quake).

California is next followed by Yellowstone.

Guess we won't have to worry about man made climate change...

My brother is an HPD Captain in Honolulu, the last time they pulled out all the stops, called everyone in, blocked off much of the coast, evacuated areas...etc, then 6 inch wave.  I guess it's good to err on the safe side, but that was hard for them to swallow.

Omarion, hell...pray for Don Francisco!

(In all seriousness, hope folks are OK.  And I point out the bad joke as apparently Sabado Gigante is only the longest running variety programme on TV now which is hosted by a Chilean guy (whose RL name is suspiciously German; this is surprisingly not unusual among Chileans and was common even before World War II) who is only seven days younger than Dick Clark. :D)

/I'll admit, I watch Sabado Gigante for the tatas :D
