This is pretty tame compared to some of the lunacy you see at gun shows.

Sovereign Citizen "Private Use" license plates, autographed copies of The Turner Diaries, guidebooks on how to write checks against the bank account opened in your name, when the Zionist Occupied Government of the United States of America sold your identity as collateral to a cabal of Jewish bankers who run the world from an underground complex in eastern Kansas...

Wow, I guess the gun shows here are different. There is some pretty far right propaganda, mostly of the anti-Taft sort, but nothing like you describe. Mostly just overpriced ammo, overpriced guns, beef jerky, and knives at the shows here. I stopped going because of the huge crowds and lack of deals.

No kidding.

My personal favorite is the "Liberal hunting permits" you'll sometimes see at them.  Because it's absolutely farking hilarious for a "responsible gun owner" to rile up people he disagrees with by joking he's going to kill them.

It's a very strange mentality to have.  They scream from the top of their lungs that no responsible owner would ever commit a crime with a gun then proceed to list of all the paranoid fantasies they have that would allow them to go all John Rambo on the world.

I guess the idea is that once those fantasies come true, what they're doing won't technically be illegal.

As a social liberal gun owner, let me be the first to admit that there are a ton of crazy right wing gun owners who get their panties in a bunch about "librulz".. Most of them just have a dumb way of venting off steam, and are not actually violent, so much as they are just passionate and stupid. There are normal gun owners, most aren't as involved as I am(I have a collection), and either have the gun for protection, or hit the range once in a while. They are also a quiet majority.

I understand what a gun  show is, it's no weirder than any other kind of nerd convention/fair.

But a "gun  rally" sounds pretty insane to begin with.

Last gun show I attended was in the late 80s in Pittsburgh. Very tame. I did buy a bumper sticker, though. It said "Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my guns". I loved that bumper sticker. It's the only one I've ever had.

Gun shows have always held a special place of irony with me because it was the first place I ever saw a copy of "Rules For Radicals" by Saul Alinsky. Of course, this was in the 90's when Van Buren was the enemy and Rightwingistan pundits hadn't decided Alinsky was a LIBERAL BOOGEYMAN.

Meanwhile, the linked article in the Guardian is so stupid I was trying to figure out if it was serious or April-Fools-Day satire meant to make the anti-gun side of the conversation look ridiculous.

Step 1: Regulate guns on the basis of certain cosmetic features

Step 2: Panic because gun owners can evade regulation by making "merely cosmetic" modifications to their guns to remove those features. Refer to it a "loophole" in the law.

[facepalm]

They are protesting against a law that was shoved through the legislature in just 19 hours. The didn't get any say or the chance to contact their representatives and state senators about it before it was signed into law.

Is it any wonder that they are pissed about it?
