Nicely done. One of the very few XKCD comics I enjoy covers this subject, but I don't feel like searching for it.

Now they just have to make it so Comic Sans is the default font for their World Wide Web.

I'm a little dissapointed.  I was hoping to learn they'd found a way to use antimatter to heat frozen pizza.

:(

Comic Sans is actually a representation of fractals, don't you know??
It's Chaos Theory in action...

You sure are.  Look at your calendar.

Well, just touch the two together. It'll probably warm up the pizza a little too quickly, though. Also you, since you touched it.

I've been conducting research along similar lines, and have discovered a novel way to rapidly cool cooked pasta by mixing it with stoichiometric quantities of antipasto.

The SSC was cancelled for two reasons - trouble getting the magnets to work and not enough international participation. It was not a political decision.
RHIC is the only polarized proton collider in the world and still runs every year (it is running now). A large number of US institutions participate in the LHC.

And mismanagement and cost overruns.

It was not a political decision.

If Congress controls the purse strings, it's a political decision.

So we agree - it was overbudget in large part for the two reasons I mentioned. What I meant by 'it wasn't a political decision' wasn't that the government wasn't involved, but that 'it wasn't a partisan political decision' as OnlyM3 trolled... The rumors about extravagant parties were just what pushed it over the edge. It became a convenient target during tight times but it was already in trouble because magnet technology at the time was not up to the tasks as spec'd. And more international participation means more money.

I don't know why I responded to the troll in the first place frankly... cheers
