Perhaps this is the year the Internet Fools Day joke jumps the shark, and ends it once and for all.

Let's keep our fingers crossed, because if this keeps up, I am convinced the World will end in an April Fools joke gone horribly wrong.

Also, those are 3-dimensional, so they can't be "square" eggs.

Either I am getting old and boring, or the internet has killed April fools day.

It used to be that you weren't reminded everywhere you looked what day it is.  You could usually pull off one or two pranks before people remembered.

Now I am inundated (especially damn FB) with friends saying stupid crap trying to pull people's chains and followed by plenty of "it's april fools and your not going to fool me!" comments.

Actually, I just realized.  I am grouchy as hell today.  I need a beer.

I feel the same way. At this point, everyone is on guard against it and we are all just judging the hilariousness (or lack thereof) of the pranks rather than actually being fooled. It makes me grouchy too and pass me a beer.

Back in the days of QuantumLINK for the Commodore 64 (circa 1990 or so), in a science fiction forum thread there was lots of moaning over news that, with the horror that was "Star Trek V" still on our minds, the next Star Trek movie would star a whole new cast of teen (or apparent teen) actors and be about Kirk and co. at Starfleet Academy. This was while TNG was still on the air, and before the "Relics" episode with Scottie was announced, let alone aired.

I (using this same handle) posted a long post about how I had inside contacts at Paramount and found out that instead, "Star Trek VI" would be a great send-off for the crew we know and loved. I wrote up a full plot summary ending basically with Kirk and Scottie on a shuttlecraft lost in the Delta Quadrant (yes, I thought this up long before anyone had ever heard of Voyager) and unable to get home, but deciding that, just the two of them, they would continue the original five-year mission: to explore strange, new worlds. To seek out new life, and new civilizations. To boldly go where no one had gone before ― forever! Fade to black.

The last two lines of my post were:

I have just two more words to say about this:

"April Fool."

Yes, it was April Fools Day when I posted that. The first three Replies I remember verbatim to this day:

That was really cruel.
That was very, VERY cruel.
THROW that man to the Klingons NOW!!

A fourth further downthread was along the lines of how sad it was that some guy on Q-Link came up with a much better plot than the Hollywood people did, just as an April Fools hoax.

There are some that actually made me chuckle... The spray on suspenders in the other thread didn't fool me, but I liked it. Nerf Nuke wold be awesome. ted Cruz with a tattoo is the funniest thing a Rightie has come up with in probably a decade, so there's that. I'd say that the only one with any legs, IMHO is the lots more angry otters of the wombats. All the rest are either not very great, or only funny for a few minutes and then done. Although, once again, ThinkGeek comes up with something I would actually want to buy.

Oh, and I DID get a kick out of IFixit's 'Teaming up with Apple' gag, is anyone missed that.
This is really the core part:

But it isn't just a number for iFixit. As part of the deal, Apple made a commitment to produce the most replaceable electronic devices and personal computers on the market. This is a clear win for the whole iFixit community.
Apple is working hard to make devices last long enough to be upgraded or irrelevant, making repairability an antiquated notion.

It's been decades (I was in college), but NPR on All Things Considered ran a good one, one of their typical full-length stories, this one about cheese mining is Wisconsin. The outcue was the reporter doing the closing voice over, with someone on a megaphone saying "This is an illegal demonstration, put down your cheese knives and disperse," and a crowd singing to "GIve Peace a Chance," "All we are saying, is give cheese a chance."

I really hate this day on the internet. Does anyone even find these amusing anymore? It's over done and usually, poorly done.  I'm skeptical enough of everything I read evey other day of the year.

This.

The whole thing that made April fools pranks good was that most people never expected it. Now, every website has been posting their lists of "Best April fools pranks" for a week and everywhere else you look you're reminded of it. There's really no point to it anymore.

One that DID fool someone: Gorilla riding tours led by Mireya Mayor.

Mireya, a wildlife anthropologist with Nat Geo Wild, posted on her Facebook wall:

This is an actual letter I received from someone regarding my OBVIOUSLY AN APRIL FOOL's JOKE regarding piggyback riding on a gorilla around NYC.

"I have raised gorillas, chimps and orangs and I'm totally appalled at what I saw in the ZOZI travel newsletter...are you kidding me? Do you really use actual gorillas for touring? What a complete betrayal of what you're supposed to be about. Shame on you."

That one worked well, because of all the brainwashed iHaters who will believe anything bad written about Apple, without thinking about what misinformation they're being spoon fed.

I was fooled by this story about a polluted Chinese city shipping in bags of fresh mountain air. I thought it was going to turn out to be an April-Fools hoax, but apparently it isn't.

until today so I kept checking to be sure it isn't an April fool.

Paraphrasing my own FB update, re April 1: "Since the popularisation of the internet, April Fools Day has become increasingly lamer - due to a combination of a larger number of people who think they are funny, and a yet larger number of people willing to believe anything."
