Considering the problems with past Mars missions, I'm surprised it even got near it.

Not for nuthin, but oil is a fossil fuel.  That sort of requires the breakdown of an enormous amount of organic material.  Considering Mars has never shown any sign of any organic material much at all, let alone the quantities necessary to create oil, I think that would be quite impossible.
Unless aliens put it there.  Could be.

Re: XKCD cartoon

One of the reasons modern society fails to move forward in some ways is that we have an entire generation raised on Disney that believes machines and animals think like this.

Human beings have always thought like this.  It's one of the defining characteristics of a human.

Alien 1: Well, we just developed perpetual energy... But we have this surplus of fossil fuel, what can we do with it?
Alien 2: Plastic? We still kind of need to create utensils and clothes
Alien 1: Nah, the recycled stuff is just as good. Besides, the process to manufacture oil to plastics is more or less messy.
Alien 2: Well... How about sell it to the Trell-Kir? They still use fossil fuel?
Alien 1: Those war-mongering fools, are you insane? Soon enough they'll be on our colonies... 'Liberating' them from us.
Alien 2: Ok... Why not dump it on some dead planet?
Alien 1: That is just... Well, I can't think of a better idea. What sectors we have as landfill?
Alien 2: Sector 25-K has a few planets with not life on it... Except for the third.
Alien 1: Really? What kind of life?
Alien 2: Complex. Just a few million years the main species, some bird-like giants, died off. Now it's just mammals. There's one in particular that is evolving to the use of tools.
Alien 1: Nice. Estimated time until they develop space travel?.
Alien 2: We have no record of  a mammalian species as a sapient one, so I think that by the time they have space travel, the oil will be useless.
Alien 1: Do you think they'll turn out like the Trell-Kir?
Alien 2: Nah, mammals are communal animals that raise their young. They'll probably be a peaceful race as a whole, but they might develop religion.
Alien 1: Possibly a communal religion of peace, I hope. Ok, send the fossil fuel to one of the uninhabited planets.
