1 gigabyte? ha ha right, great april fool's joke guys. no one could even possibly use the 10 megabytes that hotmail gives us. like a search engine would even do email in the first place. i guess that's the kind of thing a company with a base on the moon and it's own navy would come up with.

oh, we were so much younger and more innocent then.

It's so fun to read old articles like that and compare the predictions to reality.

Zoom forward 10 years, and I've got a boat load of stuff invested (not money) in Google.
I have like 5 email accounts, a Play account for Android Development, Webmaster and Analytics for my sites, etc, etc...  Not to mention 2 phones and 2 tablets that are Android.

Say what you will, but Google has begun their takeover, and seem to be doing a pretty good job.

Begun? Whatever Google was going to become, they've become. They'll continue to mess with new stuff, but their splash has been made.

Crazy Google, no one will use it.  What will they try next? Cellphones?

I submitted this with a better headline.

They forgot to mention that they'd be allowing the NSA to access gmail.  I wonder how long the NSA waited before approaching google - at first they're like "pffft gmail, not worth our time", then 3 years later "omg we have to have access, this gmail thing is exploding".

Yeah, I suppose I missed the point of the joke that this thread is, and started speaking from the present.
I guess I'm just saying that, joke or not, the prediction was correct.  I think.

Their search is engine is already starting to decline.  Censoring things for the MPAA and RIAA and any nutty government out there,  censoring auto search / auto complete,  no real way to turn off the safe search during GIS and who knows what else,  no thanks.

Will this be on my AOL home page?

2014-04-01 10:01:57 AM
This will never catch on.  All my friends use AOL and it's under $20 per month and comes with a free chat app (AIM).  For 1 gb google.com will have to charge around $53 per month just to break even

I do SO remember when this whole thing was still in Beta, and you had to get an Invite from someone to get an account.  It was like being part of an elite club.

I don't remember who it was, but I got my first invite from a Farker lo, those many years ago.

My boys were 7 & 9 back then, and the addresses I set up for them then are the only email addresses they've ever had, outside their student school-mandated ones.

When I first got online in the mid 90's it was yahoo,  they were giving away shares on their website at one point,  I could never be arsed to sign up for them,  they've gone up a little since then and back down some too.

Then I went to altavista,  their bablefish translator was pretty spiffy at the time.

Then the googles.

Now it's duckduckgo or startpage

Is this where I get a check just for forwarding random e-mails?  My cousin's second nephew's third cousin's probation officer's wife's hairdresser's gynecologist's plumber was at a football game last week and showed me his check for $23,657.13!  If we all do this, they will have to pay up!

Anybody have any invites?

2014-04-01 10:17:49 AM
I was really interested in g-mail, but they wouldn't let me sign up without an invite so I never used it, even when they stopped requiring the invites.

I was also really interested in Google+, but they wouldn't let me sign up without an invite. Now I actively go out of my way to avoid getting signed up for it.

I remember laughing about that, sending increasingly large images back and forth to see how long it took for us to fill the entire mailbox. The outraged email from the stranger who accidentally made it onto the email list because we can't type.

I've gotta say that THAT has been a major sticking point in keeping Google as my search engine.

Not a fan of Google pre-approving all of the results I get.

school-mandated email addresses?  schools mandate such a thing?

I have email in my gmail account going back to 2004.  My yahoo email goes back to 2003.  I've completely purged hotmail a couple times (a couple times they were trivial to hack), and thus have some stuff from 2007, but most is much newer.

Guess that means I'm cool, right?  Right?

Additionally, I have to admit that I missed the date when I read the article.

As a result, I spent most of the article muttering, "I was pretty sure that they had that already."
