This is the list of all committee chairs retiring this year. Apologies for the formatting, it's copypasta and I don't feel like fixing it:

Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Finance Committee ... Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), HELP Committee ... Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Banking Committee ... Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Armed Services Committee ... Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), Commerce and Transportation Committee ... Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), Ways and Means Committee ... Rep. Richard 'Doc' Hastings (R-Wash.), Natural Resources Committee ... Rep. Howard 'Buck' McKeon (R-Calif.), Armed Services Committee ... Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.), Intelligence Committee.

Quite simply, this is a ridiculous exodus, especially in the House (House chairs have far greater power relative to a normal member than Senate chairs, and those Senators are all pretty old and have been on the verge of this for years). Several of those guys are term limited as Chair by GOP rules, but they would still wield enormous influence if they stayed. They're not staying, and lots of other senior Republicans are leaving too. It strikes me that they're pretty much all serious guys who used to actually legislate, with all the messy detail and compromise that entails. Those guys are the ones who are leaving. Draw from that what you will.

I find it interesting that there are so many chairs dropping in the House. Are they retiring or going after a senate seat up for grabs?

Retiring. Mike Rogers is planning to go into talk radio, don't know if any of the others have plans.

Just goes to show you, trying to govern responsibly gets you nowhere.
