Slashing the retirement safety net is an overarching goal for wealthy donors and party elites, but their elderly voting base strongly opposes any cuts.

TPM sure can herp the derp.

Dear GOP,

Want to fix the economy?

Here's how you do it...

1) Re-enact Glass-Steagall, word for word, immediately.

2) Raise taxes on capital gains and other investment income.  It doesn't have to be as high as regular income if the thought gets your panties in a bunch, but it should at least be where it was during the Clinton years.

3) Raise the ceiling on payroll taxes to include all income, not just capping at $106,000 (or whatever the current figure is).

4) Eliminate mortgage interest as a deduction on income tax for second homes and yachts.

5) Pass a comprehensive farm bill with proper SNAP funding.  Eliminate tax breaks to the wealthy oil companies.  (And if the oil companies don't like that, tell them they can stop drilling in North Dakota.)

6) Pass 5-year tax breaks to corporations which bring jobs back to America, especially manufacturing jobs.

7) Take that extra money to not just pay down the debt, but to reinvest in America's crumbling infrastructure.  We have 70k bridges in need of repairs, our roads and highways are shiat, and our electrical grid is a goddamn antiquated monstrosity.  And do you know what this will do?  It will create jobs and STIMULATE THE ECONOMY, which will in turn boost revenue.

There, the social safety net is healthy, we have revenue coming in, our bridges won't plunge into rivers, and unemployment will go down.

You're welcome,
Dog Welder

Dear Dog Welder,

In answer to you recent query, no, we don't really.  We want to sell the poors on tax cuts for our big donors.

My mother (70'ish y.o.) was very thankful that my nephew (23 y.o.) was able to get himself insurance via ACA (Medicare expansion in THE Ohio) while my sister was in prison (being a biatch).  The lazy moochers have grandparents that vote.

That part of The Republican Base (or "al Qaeda Republican") that is elderly strongly opposes any cuts, as Mssr. Ryan found out in 2012, although that cuts across party. Old People recognize the benefits of these programs - perhaps because they use them and know them - and support keeping them for younger folks.

Just tax as regular income on investments over $1M.  Anyone that rich has to invest anyways so it is no longer an investment incentive.

Eliminate all corporate taxes entirely.  Only people should pay taxes.  Also, corporations should not be allowed to make any form of political donation.  Any money has to be taxed before it can be transferred out of a US bank.

8) single payer

9) cut defense spending, have the military construct a moon base

10) metric system

11) eliminate the penny

12) replace all social assistance payments with a 1 lump sum transfer to all citizens every month (social credit/reverse income tax approach)

So you're going into a retirement home and sell your house of 30 years for a multi-hundred-thousand dollar "profit" (i.e. ignoring inflation), you want to have the government demand 12% (employer and employee combined Social Security rate) of it? On top of the increased capital gains?

It's not 110% perfect right out of the gate! Let's give up, revert to the status quo, abandon any idea of things ever getting better, and forego any thought of adjusting a really good idea! It's just too hard!
