You can. By all means. Go to Saudi Arabia. I'll buy some of the plane tickets if you make sure they're one way.

2014-04-01 11:19:32 AM
They pretty much have. Remember kids: it's not intolerant to want to keep rights out of the hands of the Godless and the homos--it IS intolerant to point out it out when they actually say it though-- it's a danger to have freedom of religion if that religion isn't based on Judeo-Christian principles, and the separation of Church and State was just a goof that the Framers had in mind after the fiasco of the Articles of Confederation and the official faiths that each state incorporated and the deaths and damage that the brawl over said faiths resulted in was just "rough housing"...

Well, even back then, the Islamic centers of learning were always around the Mediterranean, the Fertile Crescent, or Central Asia (i.e. where they interacted with other cultures), not the Arabian peninsula.

I think you might be right.  It's the separation of church and state that allows the televangelists/prosperity preachers/con-persons to exist and operate in the first place.  If this nation were a theocracy based on biblical principles all of them would be out of business.

And we'd be right back to where we weren't.  The codification of official, government-approved religion was a basis for the Puritans coming here.  Now they want to go back to it, and undo a few hundred years' worth of practicing as your conscience deigns.

You may want to re-check that history. Several colonies were founded with "official" religions.

Rhode Island was started specifically to give religious "objectors" (those who weren't of the "correct" strain of Protestant) a safe place. Maryland was specifically founded as a Catholic colony. Pennsylvania was a home for Quakers, and was (IIRC) the first to allow people from all denominations to serve in government.

Many of the colonies had rules about who was eligible to serve in government, and those usually didn't involve atheists/agnostics, Jews, Muslims (or "Mohametans"), "Hindoos", or Buddhists, and usually excluded either Catholics or Protestants (depending on the state's religion).

But you're right that many people want to go back to that. It's really weird - we spent thousands of years throwing off the various shackles of religion, only to beg for them back.

Does it have to be a turtle? If I have to get gay married, I want it to be to Gavin Rossdale. Not because I find him attractive (not that I don't), but because Gwen Stefani might want to watch....and then join in. And that would make it all worth it.

So why do lefties seem to have no problem siding with the radical muslims and only have hatred for radical christian?

I don't know.  That's your paranoid fantasy; you explain how it works.

theorellior: badaboom: Really? No muslims here in the USA trying to convert us and impose Sharia? None?

Are you a freeze-dried alt account? I don't remember seeing your brand of moronity before, yet you supposedly date to 2005.

Well, I'm sure you're just a common-or-garden variety moron, so keep on keeping on.

He went quite for a couple of years, but he was slinging derp much like this back in 2012 or so.

"Quiet, not "quite"

When you wrote "free thought", subby, I thought you meant free expression and thinking for one's self.  Not atheism with new racing stripes painted on it.  My mistake.  Gotta get with the new Eurasia.

They are, but they don't care.

I've got plenty of hate for both, thanks :)

palelizard: If people question the existence of God, they'll do anything.  People who don't believe are the most dangerous thing on the planet.

If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward then brother that person is a piece of shiat.  And I'd like to get as many of them out into the open as possible.

The real problem is Authoritarians protecting the weakness of their own moral framework onto the rest of us, who have no difficulty being good people without the threat of punishment from some magical daddy-figure.

Transference of fear and self loathing to an authoritarian vessel.  It's catharsis, he absorbs their dread with his narrative. Because of this he's effective in proportion of the amount of certainty he can project.
Certain linguistic anthropologists think that religion is a language virus that rewrites pathways in the brain.  It dulls critical thinking.

Duck_of_Doom:  And we'd be right back to where we weren't.  The codification of official, government-approved religion was a basis for the Puritans coming here.  Now they want to go back to it, and undo a few hundred years' worth of practicing as your conscience deigns.

Not exactly.  It was because Oliver Cromwell wasn't enforcing -their- religion.  Remember that the Pilgrims first went to Amsterdam before they sailed to the Americas.  If liberal Amsterdam wasn't good enough for them, that's a good sign that "freedom" in its widest sense wasn't what they were looking for.

And, in fact, once they arrived, they proceeded to set up a series of colonies that were some of the most dark and repressive theocracies ever seen on the face of the earth.   We should thank our lucky stars that the Age of Enlightenment kicked the Puritans' philosophical asses.

The easiest way to cure biblical fundamentalism is to use the bible to treat those fundies medically.

Doctor:  "You're having a heart attack?  Well, lets see what this bible says about treating that."

Z-clipped: Barricaded Gunman: Arkanaut: Well, even back then, the Islamic centers of learning were always around the Mediterranean, the Fertile Crescent, or Central Asia (i.e. where they interacted with other cultures), not the Arabian peninsula.

THIS. The effing Saudis are always ready to jump up and take credit for the whole "keeping the light of knowledge burning" for centuries.

Yeah,  last time I checked, Córdoba isn't in the Middle East.

A Kurdish truck driver once asked me if I knew what the biggest problem in the Middle-East was. I said "No....." expecting to hear "The Jews", or "Western aggression"... nope. According to this man, it was "Those goddam, ignorant, stupid farking Arabs!" Apparently calling someone an Arab is NOT a compliment in most parts of the Islamic world.

Arabs are the Westboro Baptist Church of the Islamic world with the unfortunate added insult that we're all expected to go there at least once in our lives because they've got Mecca.
