I like his reasoning.

I read that America switched sides to show solidarity with France over England during the Napoleonic wars. I like the story so I will not look it up.

As noted in the article, Sweden did it in 1967 with no significant problems.

Not really that big of deal since just about every road in the country except for one is only one lane wide already.

We were annoyed enough with England to have the War of 1812 with them at that time, yes.

"The little Englanders who want out of Europe are the only ones driving on the left-hand side. We've been the smaller relative dominated and having to copy their ridiculous ways for too long. No more. Just think, this will be an indignity for little England - isolated in Europe and pootling along in the slow lane on the left,"

Instead of red, amber, green, it would have become red, amber, blue. But there was a fear that this would be adopted south of the border by the Conservatives and so lose any distinctiveness.

All they have to do is close the pubs for a couple of days during the transition and they will be fine.

I guess that's all in your interpretation about it being right or wrong.

It was an April fools' article.

It wasn't funny.

A number of (London based) newspapers ran with April fools' day stories making fun of the Scottish indie campaign but unfortunately they've been printing so many nonsensical scare stories on the topic for the last few months that people just took them seriously.

Close the pubs for a couple of days in Scotland? The economy would collapse in utter ruin.

It would make more sense for the Republic of Ireland to switch to driving on the right than it would for Scotland.  Also, Irish nationalists have a greater disdain for the English than the Scots do.

I'd also wager that when Ireland does switch sides, it would just be a matter of time before the UK follows.  The UK would be mostly surrounded by territories with right hand cars.  Also, left hand cars would become an even smaller niche market within Europe.

Switching over all at once would be too much change. Start with trucks and buses for the first month.

The whole point to driving on the left is so can use your right arm to Joust with the oncoming drivers. How are Scottish drivers gonna Joust now??

/gotta keep my sword arm available for defending against other drivers

Except for the part about closing the pubs and banning alcohol sales for a week before the switch-over, which didn't go over well in Sweden and sure as hell won't go over well in Scotland.

The scale of the scheme is enormous: Scotland has 2,174 miles of road

2,174 mi is enormous? My kids have to ride that distance to school.

The funny thing is that the UK will eventually have to switch to driving on the right as part of EU regs.  They keep putting it off for various reasons, but it will happen.

Yeah...I somehow get the feeling it's something they feel they have to hang onto for emotional/historical reasons. Sort of the way the USA stubbornly hangs onto the English measurement system.

Yeah, they got it done in a time of lower population, lower car ownership, and did it right before it became an expensive problem to change headlights.

Most?

The roads that carry the most traffic, are, hopefully, 3 lane motorways*.

But, there are still plenty nice wee back roads for bikers to get their knee down, and the like.

*That's 3 lanes in each direction that I mean there, by the way.

Fair enough, I'd rather have my stronger hand on the steering wheel and have my biatch hand change gears.

From Scotland I'd believe it. Most butt-hurt nation ever to hold the highest office of their oppressor, ever.

Yeah, no. Scots will cheer on any country in the world if they are playing England in a football match.

And the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland (part of the UK) is just the same as the border between England and Scotland. Even though Ireland is a totally separate country on most roads there isn't even a sign telling you you are now in a different country. Only the speed signs suddenly being in KMH instead of MPH tells you you have left the UK.

Frankly, I'm shocked they've gone as "European" as they have, what with decimalizing the Pound Sterling and using Metric for many things. I'm not holding my breath until they adopt something else European.

Newer cars it really isn't a big deal but get in a older car or a commercial truck and you will want the stronger hand.

Independence strategists are believed to have sought advice on the plan from the Stirling University professor of transport semiotics, Lana Gocaireachd.

La na Gocaireachd - gaelic for April fools day

A very well written article, very hard to spot for the causal observer.

Just a pity that its another dig at the "Yes for independence campaign"

The way shiat will go down:

Yes Vote:
Life will be slightly harder for 2 to 5 years and will then improve considerably

No Vote:
The English government will punish the Scots for the next 10+ years with funding cuts and the like for attempting to get independence

I know what i'd rather choose
