the general rule is when there's no Hebrew word for something, it's a bad idea

Does that mean that if there *is* a Hebrew word for it it's a good idea?

They really need to have younger hosts on when they do these things, just so we can watch their uncomfortable shuffling as they try to process that they're really hearing what they're hearing.

Jews were the forefathers of modern day banking

They will always have an advantage with it.

They invented it so of course they are gonna have an advantage.

Do you know that the UK is the only country in the world where they dont have the name of their country on their stamps? Why is that? Because they invented the damn thing. Its their invention.

Most observant Jews would not be fixing their cars on Saturdays, he is right about that.

it was one of the few things that european christian rulers allowed them to do back in the middle ages - mainly because the bible forbids the sin of usury - the charging of interest for loans.

Indeed

There is a documentary called The Ascent of Money. It is a good watch. It explains the foundations of modern day banking.

Yep. The roots of anti-Semitism in Europe were about money, to a large extent. Usury is forbidden in Islam as well.

Until the early 20th century, Hebrew had been a dead liturgical language for a thousand years or thereabouts. Sort of like Latin these days - who speaks it beyond people who learned it in school, or people who use it for work? (Though the fact that many modern languages are Latin-derived makes that a more relevant skill.)

There was no Hebrew word for "bicycle" until Ben Yehuda made one up (ofanayim). There was no Hebrew word for computer (m'chashev - "thinker" - but I think modern usage came up with a different one). Hell, the modern Hebrew word for "electricity" borrows an old Kabbalistic name of an angel (chashmal).

Pat should really shut his farking cockwarmer.

Grenades are bad, but there's a Hebrew word for them: rimonim. In fact, that word can be found throughout the Bible. Granted, rimonim originally meant "pomegranates." Modern Hebrew required names for a lot of new things.

Google translate seems to think that הוגן is a good Hebrew translation of "fair".

Fair assessment? Modern or classic Hebrew?

I'd like to take this time to thank former Rep. Pete McCloskey, who derailed Pat Robertson's Presidential campaign by revealing that Pat's claims of being a hero of the Korean War were completely full of shiat, and that Robertson actually spent the war running the bar at the officer's club, on a base safely in Japan.

I'm Jewish, and I'd just like to say that the Hasidim make us all look bad. They are the Jewish equivalent of Salafists and they're walking stereotypes. I remember going to NYC with my family and walking down a street full of Hasidic shop owners hanging out their doors shouting at everyone to buy their diamonds. I had an overwhelming urge to shout at them, "Hey, guys... YOU'RE NOT HELPING!" I am not the least bit surprised at this image.

I love how they've come to be what many people think of as "old-school" Judaism, yet few people realize that Hasidic Orthodoxy is actually one of the newer sects of Judaism, formed in the 18th century.

The article didn't get too specific so I'll ask. How exactly do juice go about becoming banker juice? How is the diamond business nosed into, so to speak?

I'm not asking for myself as I'm not joosh. But I have a few friends who are and they aren't necessarily rich, and I figure some of the joogold might come my way if they found themselves a few shekels ahead.

A bunch of idiots who worship the same god you do don't make you look like anything at all, in my book. They have no more to do with you than Robertson has to do with a sane, decent Christian.

Right.  Specifically, the Old Testament -- the part written by the Hebrews -- forbids usury.  So why was it OK for Jews?

Here's a collection of verses.  Some seem to say it's OK to charge interest to non-Jews, but others don't seem to limit the prohibition.

As opposed to simply cowering behind their cash registers? Do you really think Hasidim own the patent on high-pressure sales?
