Crass and Jaded Mother Farker: daha: It's just a press release, not even actual news.

Unfortunately, press releases have become actual news.

Journalism as we once knew it is dead.

/Not using my J school degree because I'm just not that interested.
//Doesn't seem to be stopping the "journalists" I know.

I work for a non profit. We put often put out press releases with quotable lines but little substance (reacting to an event with reiterated goals and talking points).

We also put out amazing well researched goddamn important reports that took years of hard work, use that research to actually make a difference, and do incredible work organizing a huge number of supporters from all sorts of backgrounds and ideaologies under a common goal.

Guess which get attention/earned media.

And this is true in any larger advocacy group I've seen and has gotten way worse in the past few years: if you're good at generating those generic statements for lazy journalists to jump on, you will advance farther and more authority will subsequently be associated with you than if you know your sh-t and are passionate but not good looking or quick with sound bites. It's gotten worse in parallel to the decline of honest bipartisanship.

All about the goddamn sound bites and we're all guilty and it's at the expense of the damn country. We could not put out the sound bite releases, but then we don't get covered. Journalists have stupid tight budgets and their employer just wants it done so I can't entirely put it on laziness. And the pundits and public want easy narratives in black and white, and so on and so on and HEADDESK.

So hey. Cars are cool. I used to bike to the Woodward Dream Cruise with my Dad. I bet if we did that this year at least one person would assume we were making an antagonistic statement about car culture in Michigan. My Dad just hates paying for parking anywhere ever, and he'd rather bike than walk a mile from the closest free spot.

So cars.

/frustrating day at work, can you tell?

Some Coke Drinking Guy: I got t-boned in my crappy little suzuki the other day.  Other parties fault, so his insurance is covering everything, including the rental of course.  And what do they rent me?  A charcoal colored 2014 Dodge Charger.  After driving that piece of engineering perfection for almost a week, I have decided that Ford can keep its Mustangs, because the Dodge is the greatest performance vehicle I have ever driven.  I am going to cry in a few days when I have to take it back.

Okay, we'll both get Farkied as "Obvious Dodge Shill" after this, but I'm currently having the exact same experience. I got rear-ended at a stoplight in February, and the rental place offered me a 2014 Mustang or a 2014 Charger. I've never driven a Dodge anything in my life, but opted for the Charger because it was a four door and I thought I'd only have it for a few days.

Well six weeks later, I'm still driving this Charger, and it is a f#cking beast. I had it at 120 on the freeway and it was running smooth and still had more to give. I never would have even test driven one of these, but now I want one.

Is that the kid who walked up to the top floor a few weeks ago?

Combined with him and the base jumpers who just got busted, you'd think they could just put up a challenge on twitter or something.  Some kid would probably just drive one up the staircase.

I mean the WTC, not the Empire State Building - same thing, really, isn't it?  A really tall building in NYC.

My mom drove a new '68 V8 Mustang off of the showroom floor.

It was towed back that night when it wouldn't start.

It was towed back 4 times the first year she owned it.

She got into a screaming match on the showroom floor because she was told it was overheating because she 'drove like a woman' (ah the 60s).  It turns out it had the wrong thermostat in it, and the dealer mechanics kept replacing it with the same wrong model until one of the mechanics was like "Hey, I think that's the wrong one, lets look it up.  Doh!"

The after market AC she had put in it fried the electrical system.

I had a rental Charger back in January. Just a basic model with the 6-cyl, but it was a surprisingly good car. Very smooth, plenty of power, very comfortable. Rearward visibility sucked, but that's the case with about anything now.

If I were looking for a larger car I'd probably be getting a Charger AWD with the V-6. It just didn't feel like it needed the Hemi.

-One modern truck ('05 Tacoma 4x4)
-One electric car ('12 LEAF)
-One classic car ('65 Mustang)
-3 classic trucks (two '48 Willys 4x4, one '52 Dodge B-3-B)
-11 classic motorcycles ('69 Triumph Scrambler, '71 Triumph Bonne 750, '63 BSA Goldstar, '67 Rickman Metisse, '66 BSA 441 Victor, etc)
-One modern motorcycle (2007 Honda 919)
-One sailboat (32' Hunter 326)

One of the Willy's truck is a donor rig and the other I'm currently restoring, the rest of the 4 wheeled vehicles run great (with exception of the head gasket leak I found in the Mustang on Sunday). About half of the motorcycles are in running, show condition - the other half are works-in-progress basket cases.

I'm by no means a Ford guy, and I've never really liked Mustangs at all.  But after goofing around with hers for a while I actually like it.  Handles surprisingly well for a live axle rear, and I do like the ability to set the suspension and steering effort in-car.  Nice power delivery, transmission is a bit clunky,  Interior has a nice layout, good seats, but Microsoft Sync is crap.  I wouldn't buy one myself but I do occasionally like taking hers for a spin.  The styling has grown on me, I think it's a good looking car.
