You're talking to a guy who thinks "making like Pharrell Williams and dropping your incoming Titan like it's hot" is a relevant reference.

As someone who doesn't like what Call of Duty/Battlefield became after they left WWII era, I do like Titanfall.

It's still full of the kind of people who must just play  all day and will kill you without even seeing you, but it's still a lot of fun.

They have a new matchmaking beta going on that attempts to build teams of similar skill to go against each other. The few games I played of it seem to have worked well.

Ditto. I think there's a specific mentality that is required to play as a titan and do well. I find I do 2-5x better if I just put that bad boy on auto or guard and use it as a decoy or resupply station.

Also, I can't believe no one pointed out that all titans in TF are bipedal. There are none with wheels or treads or crap.

On launch weekend my wife commented, "You just jumped off a building onto a robot, tore open a hatch, stuffed it full of explosives, jumped to another building, hung on a wall while detonating the explosives then ran sideways on that wall..."

My response was naturally, "Yeah, but he's not dead, just really pissed off and here he comes."

I'm immediately suspicious of Respawn after they made balancing adjustments without a majority of the playerbase hitting cap to get full kits.  That's an oversight, because they modified things based on limited perception instead of tackling the real issues with the game.

Ex: Auto pistol changes, when anyone with a brain can drop a satchel before an auto pistol lock from the front (if they're behind, you should be dead regardless of weapon).  Satchels are extremely powerful, but weren't featured in any of the final betas where people were screeching for various balancing adjustments.

Ex:  Scripted disembarks allowing for rodeoing players to hop into the air when the animation lock begins, drop a satchel in a specific spot, hop back on, detonate, and finish off your now pilotless titan.

Mechs don't run on walls. They are slow and ponderous pieces of legacy technology that humanity no longer has the ability to construct after the inner sphere collapsed.

Mechwarrior is also trademarked to the battletech universe.

Titans are to Mechs, what F1 cars are to dump trucks.

There's plenty of other guys like that out there(myself included) who do the same in a lot of competitive FPS'.  Funny thing, most of my PS3/Steam friends list is made up of really skilled players who appreciate having someone on their team who's taking care of the little things even if his K/D sucks.

I don't see either of those as a balancing issue. The smart pistol is a gimmicky, but it's meant as a stealth weapon. If you're trying to come at someone head-on and waiting for a triple-lock, you deserve to get shot.

I've had a lot of success with the rodeo/satchel combo, but again I don't think it's unbalanced. There are plenty of ways to combat a rodeo without disembarking (electric smoke, cluster rockets, having a teammate dislodge him). If you don't plan for it, it's not my fault that you're easy pickings.

Exactly, you deserve to get shot - and most people pre-adjustment were getting shot, making any attempt at balancing unnecessary.  Now they've gone and screwed the pooch, as I've had multiple triple-lock back shots not kill.

Additionally, it's pretty widely accepted that Satchels are the 'go to' ordinance to carry - because they're so powerful.  I'm personally against having 'the build' that -everyone- runs, which would include always taking smoke on your titan - a common 'solution'.  I've observed that the more you limit the kits, the less enjoyable the game becomes, you're staring options in the face that cannot be used if you want to remain marginally effective.

There is a massive difference between a team running Shotgun/Satchel/Stryder (or atlas) and a varied team of Carbine, Auto, Shotgun, SMG w/ all 3 types of Mechs.

That's fine... I only buy a game every year or two, this one looks fun, although the 'only online' component sucks. If it really plays as well as it looks, it will be a nice update for Mechwarrior, which I played the fark out of, BTW.

I thought I head that there was a single player storyline, but that it was still tied to online play? Either way, it still annoys me. I don't have a bunch of gaming friends, like someone said upthread, these people who live the game reduce the enjoyment level of someone new to it, and I also like to be able to play for 3 minutes if I sit down and suddenly decide that I don't feel like playing. Lately, almost everything I play online has some kind of penalty if you drop, or it's something like a sports game, where it's rather rude to start a game then bail. I like the 'Just join a server' mode of Counterstrike, and they're even farking that up with CS:GO. Besides, I'm a PC gamer, not as portable as an XBox.

That's what makes that game pure crack.  The stuff you can do in that game continues to amaze.  It's those moments that keep you playing.

Was getting in a few quick games before work today, and had one of those moments on Hardpoint in Angel City (great name for a porn flick).

Started a match with an amped R-101C, and took out 6 pilots, several grunts, a Titan all while capturing both C and A by myself before finally taking a shotty in the back I never saw coming.

/an amped R-101C is just deadly at any range.

The first one I agree with, they should have never dropped the effectiveness of the auto pistol, and should have balanced out the satchels.

As for the 2nd one, that's just very smart gameplay.  I haven't been able to pull it off, but I've seen others do it.  I think that's brilliant.  The second you see the Titan stop moving and drop to the ground, that's the time you jump off, throw a quick satchel and have it go kaboom!  That's the risk you take while getting out of your Titan.  Either you are going to get the drop on the guy who doesn't realize the Pilot has left, or the guy is going to jump off, and shotty you at close range (my current go to dispatch of foolish Pilots).

Equip the smoke if you are afraid of Pilot Rodeos.  That's what I do on certain maps where it's easy to rodeo a titan from above.

Aww man.  Serves me right for not reading through the thread.

As for the smart pistol, pair that up with the stim perk and have some fun chasing down unsuspecting pilots.  That's what that weapon is for.  NOT for head on battles (switch to your full auto pistol for that).  Well it used to be, before they nerfed the power when not locked.

The campaign only exists to quell the criticism of some idiot who would have said "why you no have campaign?" Without it.

That said, its short and relatively unobtrusive. You can blow through it in less than an hour and its indistinguishable from a normal round of attrition. It doesn't even matter if you win or lose.

Absolutely.

I've been doing last titan standing with my friends and we hide our Titans in guard mode in a corner of the map and then go Titan hunting on foot.  I'm sure that's probably in violation of the unwritten rules but it works like a charm.

2014-03-31 06:54:38 PM

LoR75: I have almost zero issues with EA.

Unfortunately, the majority of the gaming community disagrees with you. SimCity, Mass Effect, Plants vs. Zombies, Mercenaries, Dead Space, Battlefield, Command&Conquer, Spore, Dragon Age, and many many other games and franchises have been ruined by the tenacity of EA to make games as standardized (as in, nothing really new or groundbreaking about them) and monotonous as possible, and they are one of the biggest proprietors of microtransactions in the gaming industry, to the point of crippling some aspects of games from day 1 to really push that $1.99 "fix" (marketed as an "enhancement" or the like).

Honestly, I thought you were trolling by "pretending" that they are so great.

Here's their general method of operation thus far in terms of the majority of franchises and games they own the rights to:

Step 1: Buy game/franchise
Step 2: Water down the experience to appeal to casual gamers
Step 3: Overwork developers
Step 4: Pretend game is finished
Step 5: Pay for good reviews

You're free to have your own opinions, but again, the majority of gamers and even many game creators (including Notch, creator of Minecraft) has stated "EA is methodically destroying gaming". It is sad that people are so quick to jump back on the bandwagon and kiss EA's ass for one game while forgetting the fact that they love to take massive shiats on them. That is why EA has not learned, and will likely never learn, that they need to take a step back and reevaluate their role and how they are viewed in the industry, how they got there, and what they need to do to get back in the good graces of gamers and other content producers.

one might think that the people who consistently continue to buy bad games - rewarding the activity of EA - are far more culpable. anyone can peddle shiat on a stick, it's the millions scrabbling to eat that shiat to the exclusion of everything else that shuts down all the other restaurants in the city
