Maybe that is why the NOAA doesn't come up with a name every time someone farts in their general direction.

I think I'm going to go with "naming every front that sweeps across the nation is kinda dumb"

I know many weather professionals that think the Winter Storm naming is farking retarded.

They haven't gone to the Lovecraft pantheon?  Or are they saving that for next year?

Yep, that's exactly what was cited when they started this bullshiat. Storms splinter and then re-form. They die out almost completely and then start up again somewhere else, what the fark did these assholes expect? I won't use their stupid names either. I don't even use the TWC anymore, and I'm really pissed that they own Weather underground now, they are the sack of shiat that got dropped by the side of the road on a hot summer day in the weather field.

I think they should start naming pretty sunsets too.

Loving this blizzard right now. Maybe we'll get let home early, but I doubt it. Thankfully I went out last night and filled the gas can for the blower, so there's that.

WTH?  I thought they only named Hurricanes/Tropical Storms?   They're naming snow now?

Still no cure for a lack of Hurricane Ed.

There are really only two weather websites worth visiting. NOAA is good if you want a ton of information, and if you read the Forecast Discussion, you can skip the TV weather report.

If you just want to know what's going on right now, go to thefarkingweather.com (the non-filtered version).

Maybe if they didn't try and fox-news-ify literally every farking gust of wind that drops three snowflakes, they wouldn't have run out of farking names.

Dicks. No, I don't want to watch 30 videos that have nothing to farking do with weather.

If this trend continues, they will name every raindrop and snowflake.

Why not just call of them "Thor," since that's who causes thunder and lightning?

Thanks for the tip. Weather Underground has been the most consistent over the years, especially in Salt Lake where 4 websites can give you 5 different forecasts, but I'll check out both of those, since I don't think I can trust wunderground.

1. I love the whining coming from the rest of the media/weather establishment - i.e. "How DARE they have the audacity to name winter storms! That is the sacred priviledge of the national Weather Service!"

2. I do kinda like the utility of naming weather fronts coming across the country. Helps me keep straight what front is doing what where, so I can figure out the timing impacts on my FREQUENT cross country air travel plans.

3. Annnd, it's kinda cool getting hit by storms called HERCULES! and DRACO!

The best thing about the DirecTV- TWC spat is that I don't have to hear the stupid winter storm names that no one uses. It's a farking cold front. If you paid attention long enough, the cold front that hits New York one day will show up on the west coast a few days later since these weather fronts don't exist in a vacuum. So whatever they're naming this storm was probably named something else earlier this winter. In fact, looking on Google Earth just now and using the cloud image overlay; I counted 8 storm systems in the Northern Hemisphere. So this storm with the X name probably had a O or P name a few weeks ago.

It's dumbing down the weather and it's idiotic.

Of course the banner above their forecast is from wunderground.com...

I wondered about that as well....what happens if there are more than 26 storms in the course of one
winter (and there usually are)?  (Actually, TV weather even at the local level is sickening enough.
No, Tom Skilling, I don't give a crap about the temperature in Anchorage, Alaska, and how it's
warmer than Chicago's.  It's actually fairly common, and not because Simon Bar Sinister is
manipulating the weather from the moon!)

As someone who lives in Pierre, SD, the weather is starting to pick up and get worse. The snow is blowing, and the wind has been bad since last night. Accumulation isn't much, but the snow swirling and driving (alternates) is making it hard to see at times, and with the rest of the weather coming from Rapid, it may get uglier.

Currently staying warm...

As someone who lives in San Antonio, TX, it's going to be 82 today, and our next cold snap is only expected to bring the highs down to about 74. That's why I choose to live here, rather than some bastion of arctic tundra like Pierre, SD.

Last I saw it was 63 here in the Chicago area. It isn't going to last, though. Then again, yesterday it went from 25 in the morning to 58 in the afternoon, and surprisingly this wasn't accompanied by the phrase "tornado warning."

fark Cantore and all the other weather media whores.

Typical broadcast:
Before storm - stand in wind and rain and shout useless warnings and potential damage descriptions at camera.

After storm - stand in front of most photogenic pile of debris and provide useless data that helps none of the local residents.

fark them all

why not name it after the day it hits our coast/border ?
easy to keep track of, it is still stupid but at a different level.
could also go with junior then the third as the names go by.

On the upside, at least TWC is good for hearing about bad things happening to pretty white girls. There is a new pretty white girl tragedy video up on their site every day almost!

All public phenomena should be given private names by random corporations. PepsiColaStroid. Starbuckano. The Gap Gorge.

God damned I hate TWC; it's not just the asinine presumption of naming winter weather, it started long ago with the tabloidization of the daily darling weather. Everything is goddamned crisis with accompanying saccharine vignettes about some farkin volunteer firefighter from Deer Suck, Wisconsin who rescues a young mother who's been trapped in her Malibu for 12 minutes after guiding it slowly into a ditch due to harrowing driving conditions resulting from 2 inches overnight snowfall. Followed by 6 commercials in a row featuring Home Depot, wiper blades, and rototillers. Followed by Weather on the 8s.

So happy DirecTV kicked them to the curve.

Let me just say this about TWC running out of names:

YOU won't BELIEVE that TWC ran out of THESE!!

Mother and kids STUCK in BLIZZARD with NO NAME for HOW LONG?

You won't BELIEVE eating THIS can cause....

Scientists blame THIS for KILLER snowstorms?

C'mon, just the weather.  And what's up with that goofy guy and his videos?  Is he the owner's son?

It's always good to see how the Fox News viewer reacts.

We were only allowed to watch TWC on the big screen in our shipping office, because HR said watching the news would cause 'heated discussions about sensitie issues'.  That lasted until the GM watched a few minutes of their "Winter Storm Humperdinck With A Side Of Fries" coerage (or whateer they were calling that day's storm) and just said "Screw that."

Now it's set on the local CBS affiliate.  "Let's Make A Deal' and our Heineken-swilling oerlord Carey may not hae been much of an improement, but it beats Jim Cantore in the Doomed Weather Target Of The Day remote, or Viian Brown smiling like an Amway regional manager while she tells us about climate change.

I have to wonder how much that hurt TWC bottom line and stock price.

Did any people really drop DirecTV for Dish or another provider just so they could keep TWC?
