Yes, but even if they're doing the exact same thing; pretty people flirt. Ugly people stalk.

Yep. You have to be base line pretty to qualify as flirting, which means they have to have already decided you are worthy of flirting before you flirt.

I'm average and when I was single I could throw down major grade A flirting and still only do "okay" with women in a corresponding level. A buddy is/was as good looking as Rob Lowe and he'd have top shelf p*ssy fall into his lap with no effort. Dude had no "game" at all. We'd be out and I'd watch him flub things up constantly and he'd still get telephone numbers or be taking them home.

Not necessarily.  Confidence and the ability to turn on the "cocky/funny" go a loooong way.  Many, many a woman get with guys they hadn't been eyeballing at all ... more often than you think, it boils down to how he conducts himself.

But if you have self-esteem issues:

I have to agree with the confidence angle.

I am a wreck physically, from my ankles to the top of my head there is not one thing even remotely appealing physically about me except for my eyes (and feet, I have nice feet which is why I started at ankles), but I always drew far better looking women than I should have ever been able to do.

It's from a period in time when SNL was actually funny.

Confidence is key once you get to the talking stage.

To get there, eye contact, a shy smile, an averting of the eyes, then eye contact again...

Works wonders. I'm barely average, but I have scored way better looking women than I should.

When I'm really hot for a girl, I end up giving far too much attention, and "stalk" her away.
When I'm callously indifferent, some fall for me and I don't care; I crush their hearts.
I haven't yet mastered merging the two. Oh what I'd give to have a super-hot girl fall for me; I'd gladly give her far too much attention and crush her heart!

I think I may be doing it wrong

I want to bash the article, but it hits upon some genuine points for the clueless flirters among us.

Most of the tips are about confidence and being comfortable inside your own skin.

I've been given phone numbers at out-of-state gas stations just from a smile after I got busted looking at a woman's waist.  Zero intentions, just admiring the grace and beauty of the lines.  However, I never look away from her eyes, I just smile.  I might even be caught blushing, but I'll happily chat.  I am happily married, it's a fine compliment to be flirted with.

So gone are the days of slapping my sausage down and holding out a wad of bills no longer works?  Too bad.  That had the girls grabbing it all the time.

(The Hillshire stuff was on sale for 2.50 and three one dollar bills more than cover the cost.  The cashier was very polite as she bagged my grocery item and wished me a good day as I exited the store.  Such a nice lady.)

I'm the same with guys. If a guy is Mr. Mixed Signals and emotionally unavailable, I'm all over that. I try so hard to be cool too, but they always see through that.
And if a guy might actually treat me right, I don't notice until they have a girlfriend, pressure's off and I suddenly find them adorable.

I am most definitely doing it wrong.

Is this another one of those behavioral things that actually varies by person, like how to tell if someone's lying?

People who experience some social "discomfort" (not necessarily outright nervousness, even just plain dislike of traditional social situations) probably won't initially come across as interested even if they are. They also may look like they're lying even if they aren't. They won't be heavy on the eye contact, smiling, touching, or using your name.  But their problem is usually with the situation or environment, not necessarily the person or question.

/and yes I admit, by "they" I mean "I"/"we"

Well, only if the guy and his gal are monogamous.

I hope so. I want that for me, and I'm #1, so I wouldn't be happy with someone else's guy.
